  • NoScript Protects and Speeds Up Web Browsing • Raymond.CC

I am a Firefox user and I use very minimal extensions to avoid conflicts and also any possible slow downs during web browsing. Yesterday I was doing a little research on privacy during searching in Google and found out that it is possible that a lot of our computer information gets leaked out by just visiting a page. From Google’s Privacy FAQ, they mentioned that their servers automatically record the page requests made when we visit their sites. These “server logs” typically include our web request, Internet Protocol address, browser type, browser language, the date and time of our request and one or more cookies that may uniquely identify our browser.

Well that is what they stated but if you go to BrowserSPY.dk, you will find that A LOT of information about your computer can be retrieved from your browser by simply using javascript, java and flash.
    protect against BrowserSpy.dk
That’s when I started thinking even using VPN or elite anonymous proxy won’t even give you full anonymity. Fortunately there is a very popular addon for Firefox called NoScript which is able to protect your browser from leaking your computer’s information.

You can try it yourself by first going to http://browserspy.dk/ and click on any tests listed at the left hand sidebar. Then install NoScript extension from the link at the end of this article, restart your Firefox browser and again visit BrowserSPY to run the tests. You will notice that most of the information are not revealed and that is because JavaScript, Java, Flash Silverlight and possibly other executable contents are blocked by default.

Most websites today uses Javascript and they are considered important for websites to function correctly as they should. If that is the case, you can easily put the website into whitelist by right clicking on the page, go to NoScript and select “Allow website.com” from the menu.
    NoScript Whitelist
Other settings in the NoScript Options are pretty straight forward allowing you to configure the notification bar, appearance, restrictions, whitelist, and etc.

Other than able to protect your computer’s information from leaking and also against Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities on whitelisted sites, NoScript also cleverly blocks advertisement since most if not all advertisements uses Javascript. You will notice that websites loads much faster as the advertisements are not even downloaded to your computer in the first place, saving both bandwidth and time. I have even noticed that those nasty pop-under that cannot be blocked by Firefox popup blocker are also blocked!

You should definitely give NoScript a try if you haven’t. This addon has been around for quite a long time but I’ve only realized the importance of this extension yesterday after researching on browser leaking computer information.

This free license if legitimate and not pirated. You can find the official page for the free Vexira license at this page http://www.centralcommand.com/abj.html. However obviously this offer is not for EVERYONE. It’s meant for Akron Beacon Journal readers.

Vexira Antivirus can be installed on Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, ME, NT4, 2000, XP and Vista. The hardware requirements are Pentium 200MHz or higher processor with 64 MB of RAM and 20 MB hard disk space. During full scan, the CPU usage never goes up to 50% and averages around 30%. Total memory usage during idle is 21MB. Took 6 minutes 47 seconds to scan 41856 files. As usual, I have my own collection of virus to test on antivirus. There are 32 files and Vexira only caught 17 of them as threat. I’d wouldn’t really advice you to go for Vexira Antivirus unless you want to install on a very old and slow computer which is not frequently used for internet browsing.

Dr.Web, an antivirus software made from Russia has released their major update version 6.0 last month. The most significant modification incorporated in Dr.Web products of the sixth version is the completely changed file monitor SpIDer Guard. It provides support of 64-bit versions of Windows and improves performance and efficiency of anti-viruses achieved by optimizing interaction between the file monitor and the anti-virus engine. Now the Scanning Engine service processes scan requests from all components of the anti-virus. Dr.Web SpIDer Mail also underwent significant changes. The improved anti-virus control module SpIDer Agent now features two operation modes: user mode and administration mode. The improved updater module allows users to receive renewed key files with no effort.

    Free Dr.Web 6.0 License

During the month of August last year, there was a promotion for China people to get 1 year Dr.Web key for free. Now you can again obtain a free 1 year 1PC license for the latest Dr.Web anti-virus for Windows v6.0 from another Chinese website without any restrictions. The license is not for the PRO version of Dr.Web anti-virus so Firewall will not be included.

    1. Go to http://www.updrv.com/win7/drivecampaign/User_Reg.aspx

    2. Fill up the form according to the screenshot below. Name, password and password again, email address, QQ number (any digits), and the random CAPTCHA code.
    Free Dr.Web License Key File

    3. Visit http://www.updrv.com/win7/drivecampaign/FdriveAction.aspx

    4. Simply select any of the options for every question and click the button. The 16 digit Drweb serial number will be displayed.
    Free Dr.Web 6.0 serial number

    5. Download Dr.Web anti-virus for Windows 6.0 and install.
    32-bit: ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/windows/drweb-600-win-x86.exe
    64-bit: ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/windows/drweb-600-win-x64.exe

    6. When asked for license key file during installation, select Receive key file during installation, click the Next button and continue with the installation.

    7. When come to the registration step 1, click Obtain a license key file button and enter the 16 digit serial number and click Next. Dr.Web 6.0 will verify the serial number.

    8. At step 3, if you have previously owned a Dr.Web license, you can enter it to extend your license an extra 100 days. If not, just leave the boxes empty and click Next.

    9. At step 4, fill up the user information form and click next. Continue with the steps which will end up with downloading a license key file and store it in the directory where Dr.Web is installed.

Alternatively, you can manually convert the serial number to license key file from this page and at point number 6, you can directly load the key file to the program to activate it.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: I am not sure if this is a bug in Dr.Web 6.0 updater or the licensing restriction. After installing Dr.Web 6.0 and activated with a valid license, it still shows v6.0. However after you’ve finished updating the first time and rebooted your computer, Dr.Web 6.0 will be reverted back to v5.0. The important tip here is to set the Dr.Web updater to only update virus databases. You can do that by right clicking on the Dr.Web system tray icon and select Updater. Click the Settings button and select “Update virus databases only” at the update mode and click OK.
    Dr.Web 6.0 Update Settings
Now you can update Dr.Web 6.0 without being reverted back to v5.0. If you have missed this, you would have to uninstall Dr.Web, reinstall and change the Update settings. According to the report that I posted 2 months ago on the best performing antivirus, Dr.Web is one of the slowest to finish a full scan. The latest Dr.Web 6.0 still took very long to finish a complete scan. They should consider improving the scan time.

  • AVG 7.5 Free to Retire This Month and AVG 8 is Extremely Slow • Raymond.CC

When AVG FREE 8 was released, I was really excited to check it out because they’ve combined spyware protection into to their antivirus software. However I immediately felt that it was slowing my computer after installing it. I’ve installed AVG FREE 8 on a clean Windows XP SP3 and it already took up 38MB of memory on idle. When I launch a full scan, the AVG 8 memory usage can go up to 80MB.

There were people complaining that AVG 8 takes slightly longer to do a complete scan compared to v7.5. I believe that is because the latest AVG 8 scans for spywares as well. There are also people who reports that AVG 8 slows down whole system, causing crashes and also web browsing is way slower because of LinkScanner.

Since AVG FREE 8 is quite problematic for many users, why not just uninstall AVG 8 and use AVG 7.5? Here’s a memory usage comparison between AVG 8 and AVG 7.5.

    AVG FREE 7.5
    avgamsvr.exe (AVG Alert Manager) 368K
    avgupsvc.exe (AVG Update Service) 496K
    avgemc.exe (AVG E-Mail Scanner) 1040K
    avgcc.exe (AVG Control Center) 300K
    Total Memory Usage: 2204K

    AVG FREE 8
    avgtray.exe (AVG Tray Monitor) 6116K
    avgemc.exe (AVG E-Mail Scanner) 460K
    avgwdsvc.exe (AVG Watchdog Service) 1204K
avgrsx.exe (AVG Resident Shield Service) 30464K
    Total Memory Usage: 38244K

I am shocked to see that AVG 7.5 took only 2204K (2.2MB) memory on idle compared to AVG 8 which takes up 38244K (38MB). In AVG 8, the process that took most of the memory usage is avgrsx.exe (AVG Resident Shield Service) with 30084K out of 38244K. I’ve personally seen avgrsx.exe takes up 100mb of memory on a friend’s laptop. Different computer with different software installed and running in background can cause the memory usage to go up.

I’ve tried tweaking AVG 8 configuration by disabling nearly everything and only left the real-time antivirus & antispyware scanning enabled but the memory usage for AVG Resident Shield Service will not go down. Disabling the AVG LinkScanner fixes the slow website loading problem through.

If you think that using AVG 7.5 is the solution, then you’ll have to consider this. Michael from AVG Team announced in AVG forum that support for AVG 7.5 Free Edition is planned to end on 31st August 2008 which means only virus definition updates will continue until the end date. No more virus updates are planned for after that date. As for “program” updates, they’ve already no longer provide any update fixes. For those that are using AVG 7.5 Paid version, it will be supported until 31/12/08. I am not sure how true it is because AVG has previously mentioned that updates for your current AVG Free will not be available after May 31st 2008. AVG 7.5 is being replaced by AVG 8.0 and you will have to upgrade to stay safe. Then it was extended until June 25th 2008 and now August 31st 2008.

updates for your current AVG Free will not be available after June 25th 2008. AVG 7.5 is being replaced by AVG 8.0 and you will have to upgrade to stay safe.

Many people used to like AVG because it is free, lightweight and easy on resources. Now that the latest AVG 8 is an elephantware and AVG 7.5 is set to retire end of this month, I believe many people has and will say goodbye to AVG and use other alternatives such as Avira AntiVir Personal 8 which only uses 10072K memory on idle. Although the memory usage cannot be compared to AVG 7.5, but Avira is still one of the lightest free antivirus with very good known and unknown virus detection.

So if you’re faced with this dilemma, give Avira AntiVir Personal 8 a try and I am sure you’ll like it better than AVG FREE 8. Before installing Avira, make sure you uninstall AVG first to avoid any conflicts. I am sure AVG Technologies realize that their latest AVG 8 is a bloatware and hopefully their next major release will be lighter and uses less memory.

  • Port Forwarding Made Easy With PortMapper • Raymond.CC

Port forwarding is the act of forwarding a network port from one network node to another. This technique can allow an external user to reach a port on a private IP address (inside a LAN) from the outside via a NAT-enabled router. Port forwarding allows remote computers (e.g. public machines on the Internet) to connect to a specific computer within a private LAN. UPnP technology makes port forwarding easy by automatically forwarding the port required. However, for UPnP to work, both the program and router must support UPnP.
    How to Forward Ports
If you don’t have a router that supports UPnP and don’t know how to forward ports on your router, a program that requires port forwarding will either don’t function fully or at all! Some of that softwares that requires port forwarding to perform at peak levels are Limewire and uTorrent. You’ll notice a huge increase in download speed once you’ve forwarded the port.

I found a free program that is able to automatically detect ports opened by applications running in your system and map them to your router. This is very useful for those people who don’t know anything about port forwarding or don’t dare to mess around with their router configurations.

Port Mapper is a lightweight Windows application that securely manages the ports on your Home Networking Router. It effectively cuts down on the time spent by you in configuring and monitoring your home router. It works to automatically map the ports opened to the router while you are still playing a game or running any web-based application.

Port Mapper runs in your task bar and prompts whenever a new port is opened by some application. When a port is opened by an application so as to communicate with the internet, Port Mapper will popup a window at the bottom right corner and ask whether you would like to to forward the port. If you say yes, Port Mapper will automatically forward the port, and configure your Router to allow internet users to to communicate with the application.
    Port Forwarding Notification

Installing and using PortMapper is easy. Just download, extract and run PortMapper.exe. When running for the first time, you’ll see a Welcome Screen. The most important information is to enter your Router Username and Password for Port Mapper to check your Router settings, and forward ports.
    How to forward ports
To uninstall, just run Uninstall.bat from the PortMapper directory.

Other than forwarding ports, PortMapper can also act as a basic firewall. Some trojans that is able to remote access your computer requires port forwarding. Let’s say the legendary Subseven trojan thats already planted on your computer and requires to forward port 1243, PortMapper will detect and alert you. Other than that, most of the time we don’t remember to close the port when we’re not using it and will remain open to the Internet and to security threats. But I’d advice you not to use PortMapper as your firewall application because there are many ways a hacker can get in your computer.

PortMapper is VERY useful but unfortunately currently it can only support very few routers listed below. If your router is not listed below, you can request your router to be supported by submitting a form here.

    Linksys Routers
    BEFSR41, BEFSR81, BEFSX41, BEFVP41, BEFW11S4, WAG54G, WRT54G

    DI-624, DI-524

Fix fraps unable to run problemOne of my very good friend has problems in running Fraps and he asked me for help. I’ve always heard of Fraps but never knew what is it for. I went to www.fraps.com and found out that Fraps is used for real-time video capture, screen capture and benchmark your FPS. I believe Fraps is mostly being used by gamers who wants to record their game play.

Usually when a software can’t run, I’d advice to try uninstalling the software completely and then reinstall again. Uninstalling completely doesn’t mean just run the uninstall command from Add or Remove Programs. It means to delete every single registry entry and also files that was created by the software and not removed.

Here’s how to uninstall Fraps completely and reinstalling it to fix Fraps not opening problem.

Fraps is a shareware and the restriction is:
    1. Fraps watermark along top of video
    2. Maximum of 30 seconds per recording
    3. Screenshots saved in bitmap (BMP) format

IF” Fraps has 30 days trial limit, uninstalling completely would be resetting the time limit and that is “cracking“. Since Fraps doesn’t expire, that’s why I am writing this tutorial on how to get Fraps running again.

I used RegMon to see which registry keys is accessed, read and written by Fraps in real time. There is also a similar tool called FileMon but it is used to monitor files being read and written by Fraps. With this 2 free utilities combined, I can 100% know what to delete in order to completely remove Fraps from my friend’s system.

Follow the steps below to uninstall Fraps.
    1. Download Regmon, extract and run Regmon.exe

    2. Press CTRL+L and type fraps.exe at the Include box. Click Apply then OK button.
    Filter Fraps in Regmon

    3. Run Fraps. You will notice that a lot of registry activities being captured.
    Fraps entries in regmon

    4. Press CTRL+F and type CLSID. Try to locate the CLSID at HKCR\CLSID\{Random Data Here} path.
    Fraps cannot run fix

    5. Double click the CLSID path at Regmon and your Registry will open. Right click the whole folder and select delete.

    6. In Registry, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LICENSES and delete the LICENSES folder.

    7. Go to Start -> Run, and type %temp% and hit OK button. Delete everything in there.

    8. Go to Start -> Run, and type del %systemroot%\system32\frapsvid.dll and hit OK button.

    9. Open My Computer and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ and delete TEMP folder.

    10. Uninstall Fraps from Add or Remove Programs.
    Uninstall Fraps completely

    11. If you’ve purchased a retail version, then install the retail version that you have instead of the demo. Otherwise, download the latest Fraps demo and install.

Fraps should be able to run as normal now.
    Fraps automatically closes when ran

Note: The above method is not about cracking or hacking Fraps. It’s just that Fraps uninstaller is not smart enough to remove everything that Fraps created. So when you have problems running Fraps, uninstalling and reinstalling Fraps is not enough to fix the problem. You need to manually trace and delete the registry and files created by Fraps.

Computer is so great that we can do so many things on it unless the administrator has configured the strictest permission that denies everything other than running Outlook. For people like me that requires computer to work, we tend to jump from one website to another ended up doing everything except work. That is very common because the web has so many interesting stuff which is why some company networks prevent their employees from surfing websites.

I have very limited time on the computer nowadays because of the baby and whenever I get to spend some time on the computer, I want to be productive by learning new stuff or fixing something that is broken but sometimes it is just hard. I figured I needed a motivation so I searched for a motivational wallpaper that is able to remind to me to do my work and stop lazying around. I have never used any wallpaper, leaving the desktop background in black color to reduce the glare but I found one wallpaper that has so far improved my productivity when doing my work on the computer.

The wallpaper is in dark color with carbon fiber with a sentence in the middle that says “DO YOUR WORK. DON’T BE STUPID“. It may be a little harsh but it works for me. If I had a bunch of employees on the computer, I would make sure that all of the computers is stuck to this wallpaper.

    Motivational Wallpaper

What I really like about this wallpaper is the color is dark which is not glaring, simple and straight to the point. Whenever I minimize any opened window, I am reminded to do my work and stop being stupid 😛 You can download the motivational wallpaper from the link at the end of this article and you’re able to select your screen resolution so that it fits nicely on your computer’s screen without being stretched. If you know of any good motivational wallpaper, do share it with us by posting it in the comment area.

  • Have Your Missing or Lost USB Flash Drive Returned Back To You • Raymond.CC

I still have a few more freebies to share with you all but let’s give it a break. Let’s not forget this site is about computing and not offers or promotions. USB flash drives is pretty cheap nowadays and many people usually carry one with them wherever they go. It is so practical and small that sometimes we tend to keep everything in it and the thought of losing the USB drive can be daunting. Usually if a USB flash drive is lost or missing, there’s no hope of getting it back unless you have a note inside the drive or you use a marker to write down your contact on the USB drive.

However, having a note inside the USB flash drive is not something that can really grabbed the finder’s attention. People often gloss over and ignore text files. Hence you need something that is eye catching and can force/trick the finder. I found a very useful tool that is able to do more than placing a note which could possibly make the finder return your missing or lost USB flash drive back to you.

USB Lost and Found is a free tool that works on Windows 2000/XP/Server/Vista to setup your USB drive to keep unauthorized users from keeping your USB drive if it were to be lost.

    USB Lost and Found

USB Lost and Found has two methods of telling unauthorized users to return it. The first method is the Message method which when the user tries to use your USB drive it comes up with a message box that tells them to return it, along with your contact information, and denies access to the USB drive.
    USB Load and Found Message

The second method, which only comes with the Pro version, is called Lock Down. Lock Down immediately locks the user’s computer when the USB drive is accessed, covering the whole screen and denying access. When the computer is in lockdown mode, hotkeys such as Alt+F4 and Ctrl+Shift+Esc don’t work. Only Ctrl+Alt+Del would work and you can shutdown/restart/logoff your computer.
    USB Lost Drive LockDown

When you’ve installed the lockdown protection on your USB flash drive, you can continue accessing your USB flash drive with any of the following methods below.

    1. Totally disable autorun in your computer,
    2. When AutoPlay appears, click on “Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer” instead of clicking on “Open folder to view files using the program provided on the device.” This is located near the bottom of the list of options in AutoPlay.
    3. Go to My Computer, identify which drive letter is your USB flash drive, then right click and select Explore.
    4. Go to My Computer, identify which drive letter is your USB flash drive, then type the drive name in the address bar and hit Enter.
    5. Allow the USB Lost and Found Lock Down program to run and type in your password.

If you want the Lock Down feature, you’ll have to purchase the PRO version of USB Lost and Found for $3.49. To think about it, the lock down feature might work on “some” computer newbies but definitely not on more experienced users. If the computer has autorun turned off or security products such as USB Firewall or iKill installed, USB Lost and Found will not work. Maybe some antivirus will even warn and stop the autorun.inf from your USB flash drive… As you can see, this feature is not really perfect but I believe there are kind people in this world that would return the USB flash drive if to the owner. Another feature that could make it better is enter own custom message rather than the default “This USB drive is lost! Please contact: XXXXXXXXXX so that I may get my USB drive back! Thank you so much!”

When it comes to file sharing, the first thing that comes to people’s mind is definitely RapidShare. Probably they are one of the first website that offers free file upload and download service, that’s why they are so well known today. There are many other similar websites such as Megaupload, Hotfile, FileFactory, which offers very similar features such as free user downloading or premium user downloading that has faster download speed and less restriction.
    File Hosting with Privacy Options
One of the new file hosting website that I discovered is from Hide My Ass! or HMA! in short. Initially they only offer free web based proxy service where you can bypass web restriction on websites by pretending that you’re a US surfer (since the server is located in US). Then they started offering paid VPN service called HMA! Pro VPN which has 5000+ IP’s on 50+ servers at US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Estonia, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Portugal and Singapore.

Hide My Ass also has a free file and image hosting service with very useful privacy features.

First of all, HMA File Hosting accepts a maximum size of 400MB per file or 15MB for image and the file will be available as long as there are downloads within 30 days. Everyone has the same rights to upload and download because there are no such thing as free or premium users. The good thing about HMA file hosting is you won’t be bombarded by advertisements or having to wait for an amount of seconds for the download link to appear.

The impressive feature that is not found in most if not all file hosting websites is the privacy options. The uploader is able to set if a password is required to download the file or image, restriction based on country, ip range, website referrer or even user-agent. User-Agent is a string containing information about your computer such as your browser type, version, operating system and etc. To access this options, all you need to do is click on the link that says “View optional advanced privacy options (recommended)”.

    HMA File Hosting privacy options

I don’t really have a very fast connection so I can tell what is the maximum speed of uploading and downloading. However I can confirm that I was able to upload at 40KBps and download at 150KBps because that is the maximum speed of my internet connection.

The official website says that this service is in beta and from what I see at the HMA forums, this service has been around since 2008. Do give it a try and share your opinion on this free file hosting service.

  • Recovering the Lost Data from The Great Beyond – Windows Edition • Raymond.CC

I’m aware Raymond’s covered recovery of data in his articles before, in it, he recommends a lot of data recovery tools. His suggestions, like many of those out there, echo the need for a better system of backing up. One of my friends has perfected such a solution for himself. He uses a RAID 10 configuration that he has manage to customize into a nutcase paradise. For those not familiar with RAID 10, it is a mirrored data set (RAID 1) which is then striped (RAID 0), making the “10″ name. A RAID 10 array requires a minimum of four drives – two mirrored drives to hold half of the striped data, plus another two mirrored for the other half of the data. And he’s using this on Windows, along side a 1:1:1 imaging system, that not only backs up the RAID 10 configuration to another hard drive, but copies it also to DVD too.

Now, while this might seem like a perfect solution to many people, this is overkill and not only is this friend crazy for his data, but he’s lost his mind [which I might add, I’ve told him a lot on occasion]. There is such a thing as being too religious over your data. And while I admit, I’ve suffered data loss in the past because I don’t practice a RAID solution, I feel that if you back your data up right, you won’t have to worry about it. Since one of our forum members had lost some data in a disk failure today, I’d like to walk you though the steps I’ve managed to use to get the majority of my data back and hopefully this guide will be a handy one for you.

I’d just like to point out that the majority of these programs are free of charge and you might have heard of them before.

    Recuva

Raymond’s covered Recuva, as have many other blogs. For good reason. Out of my test data that was deleted, Recuva has time and time again either recovered portions or full bits of information from my hard drives. Unless the data was shreded, usually I was able to recover it in good form and able to use it again. It’s actually saved my behind on two finals for my courses thus far, so if you’re simply deleted it, check the recycle bin, then check this program.

    RoadKil’s Raw Copy

RawCopy’s interface is dead simple for a reason: when recovering data from a disk gone RAW, you do not want, nor do you need the aggravation of digging out a manual to understand something. RawCopy provides a free service of a 1:1 copy of your data that it can recover from your dying hard disk. And from my reading, if your disk is slipping away faster then you thought, RawCopy will help you to the best of it’s abilities. If you’d like an unorthodox trick that might just prolong it’s death a big longer, putting the hard drive in a freezer until it gets a little cold might just give you that few extra seconds it needs.

Finally, prevention is the best course of action when it comes to data loss. If you back up your important data to DVD/CD, flash drive, or external hard drive, you’ll have it there if you need it. And for those that are wondering how I back up my data these days to prevent data loss, it’s a rather simple, yet complex one at the same time. I keep a 1:1 compressed image made by Clonezilla on my second hard drive on my desktop, of my desktop and laptop, as well as backing up all my important data (non-OS stuff) to an external hard drive. I also use a different Roadkil tool for the backup of my parent’s data, which is 1:1 networked copy to a secondary computer, so if one computer fails, the other has all the data on it and is ready to be swapped out at any time. That tool would be Roadkil’s Unstoppable Copier which I would only recommend if your data is in use at the time of copying files over. Seeing as Linux has a lot of built-in tools as well as command line tools to help you, my only recommendations are to keep up with the articles, as later this week I shall cover that very subject.

For those of us that read the Windows Recovery post and thought to ourselves, “Well, Paul, Windows is a no brainer, you can use this program, this program, plus the ones you named and then some”, you’d be right. Windows is an easier operating system, not because it’s been around longer but because it was designed from the ground up to appeal to the common consumer. If you chose Linux, then you’re a minority when it comes to the world of computers.

This isn’t to say this is a bad thing. If we all used Windows 7, we’d all be infected with all the same loophole being unpatched, the same goes for any system really. However, with Linux, to recover important data, we must cross a bridge that many newbies fear: the use of your terminal emulator. So let’s start with the very basics that you’ll need before you can undertake file recovery in Linux. Keep in mind that my recommendation here will work with every operating system out there, not just Linux.

I’m going to make this process as simple as possible, as it can be a very complex operation, however, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. It means it’s harder then it’s Windows’ counterpart. Rather the install the programs on our official operating system, I’m going to provide a lesser known liveCD that I keep a copy in my CD toolkit that I take everywhere I can. The name of the CD is RIP Linux which is short for Recovery Is Possible, and it’s name covers exactly what we need it for: recovery of lost data and partitions. I have used it a grand total of three times, and while I’ve not used it very often, I can assure you, once your data is recovered, you won’t want to pay for a recovery system again.

Once you download and burn RIP to a disk, you’ll reach the boot menu. If you’re using a 32 bit operating system or a 64 bit system, it is supported, and it has the option to start the graphical shell directly by selecting the “Boot Linux System to X!” option.

Once there, RIP uses a OpenBox shell, which means you need to right click to open the menus. Once at the desktop, right click and open up XTerm. This will drop you into a terminal prompt. Once there, type in ‘photorec’ if you’re trying to recover file types, or ‘testdisk’ if you’re trying to recover a whole partition. Once into the program itself, it is insanely easy to understand. Select the disk you’re trying to recover data from (if you’re not sure, right click off of the XTerm, open PCManFM which is under Applications, then File Manager, then under the mnt folder, you can explore both of them).

If you’re using a standard computer, Intel is what you should select, otherwise, it’s darned easy to select the right one.

Once we’re past that, and it asks the partition that we are trying to recover data from, we can select the certain partition, or we can hit the “No Partition” selection. Once at this stage, we have to select where to recover to. Remember that MNT is the folder which houses the rest of our mounted drives and we can not recover data to a hard drive we are recovering from. Once you select a different spot to recover it to, hit Y, then let it recover all the data it can. As it recovers data, it will output it onto the screen for you to see, but whatever you do, do not attempt to do anything else, or you risk killing the data recovery.

Overall, it seems to be a lot of work when compared to Windows based recovery programs, such as Recuva, but as powerful as Windows tools are, I’ve recovered more data that I had lost forever with RIP then any other tool ever, including Hiren’s Boot CD (which uses often times an older version of PhotoRec). If you’ve lost data, and you’ve tried Recuva and Roadkil’s RawCopy to no prevail, RIP might just be that one last tool to try before you give up.

    RIP Linux (93mb)-

It is able to detect, remove and block all types of spyware, adware, viruses, Trojans, worms, keyloggers and other online threats. 1. Go to this page http://www.pctools.com/internet-security/free/promo/PCUSER2009

If you get the error that says “The promotion you are attempting to access is not valid in your country”, then continue to step 2. If not, skip to step 3.

I’ve reported that ICQ released a new version of ICQ v5.10 yesterday.
As usual, the latest ICQ v5.10 also comes with built-in banner advertisements which is frankly can be quite annoying to some users who only wants to have a clean chat over ICQ instant messenger.
ICQ 5.10 build 2403 2573 with banner advertisement
Well at least not for all because some companies and individuals rely on advertisements to keep their services or site alive…
Anyway, if you really want to remove the advertisement banner, here’s an easy way on how to clean or remove the advertisement banner for both ICQ 5.1 in German (build #2403) and ICQ 5.1 (build #2573) in English.

    1. Download ICQ 5.10 build 2403 2573 Banner Killer and run it.

    2. That’s all! It will automatically replace some files and your new ICQ 5.10 is now ad-free!

  • Install Cyberlink YouCam 2 Full Version for HP Laptops on ANY Windows Computer • Raymond.CC

Another thing that I didn’t like in Windows Vista is it doesn’t have a built-in way to activate webcam to test if it is working or not. To test a webcam in Vista, I had to use the “Audio and video setup” feature from Windows Live Messenger. Like in Windows XP, when you have a webcam connected, you can activate the webcam from My Computer and see what’s on the webcam without using any other software. I wonder why did Microsoft removed it in Vista? Perhaps to give software makers such as CyberLink an opportunity to make money from their webcam software called YouCam?
    free youcam 3
CyberLink YouCam is a very popular webcam companion software which normally cost $34.95 that is bundled in some laptops such as HP. You can add effects to your web cam video, including adding emotion effects, avatars, frames, filters and distortions, take a series of quick web cam photos using the Burst feature, instantly capture or schedule a web cam video, upload a web cam video directly to YouTube, email web cam photos and videos directly from CyberLink YouCam to your friends, print off your favorites web cam photos and finally share and view PowerPoint files and images together during web cam sessions.

Computeractive magazine gave their readers a fully licensed YouCam version 1 and the offer has expired. Then ChrisKing posted a link in forum to YouCam version 2 but it is hosted in HP. I downloaded it, tried to install and got the error “This software can only be installed on a Hewlett-Packard system”. It may seem impossible to install YouCam 2 on non-HP laptops but you know me, I like to challenge myself by researching on how to make things possible and then share the knowledge with you all.

CyberLink YouCam 2 is NOT a driver for your webcam. It is a software that gives dynamic effects to your video from your webcam. Do take note that before you can install CyberLink YouCam 2, you must first have a webcam. If you don’t have one, you won’t be able to install.

    1. First of all, you can download the full version of CyberLink YouCam 2 from here. The installer is hosted in a HP FTP server, if you can’t download, make sure you have access to port 21.

    2. Next, extract the sp42568.exe file by right clicking on the file and select extract. 7-Zip is able to extract the installer file for YouCam 2. If your archiving software can’t extract, then try using Universal Extractor. You should have a new folder called sp42568 with a bunch of files inside it.
    Extract YouCam installer

    3. Now you’ll have to download the trial version of CyberLink YouCam 2. Extract the CyberLink.1707_YUC080401-01.exe file like what you did in step 2. This time you will have a new folder called CyberLink.1707_YUC080401-01.

    4. Finally you will need to copy define.ini file from CyberLink.1707_YUC080401-01 folder to the sp42568 folder and overwrite it. Run the setup.exe file from sp42568 folder. Voila! You now have a full version of CyberLink YouCam 2! It can be installed on both Windows XP and Vista.

    free cyberlink youcam 3

The latest version of CyberLink YouCam is now version 3 and I believe very soon you’ll find a lot of computer magazines started to give out free licenses for the version 2.
