  • Prevent Spread of Viruses through Removable Drives with iKill • Raymond.CC

    Removable drives are one of the most simple, hassle free and effective means of data transfer in working environments like offices, schools, colleges. But, it has become like a simple boat ride for viruses to propagate. In general a USB drive of any kind, a pendrive, ipod, mp3 Players, mobile phones, all may contain viruses, they just act as carriers, the viruses/trojans exploit the autorun.inf file to execute themselves whenever you try to open the drive by double clicking. They even may
    shadow the Open, Explore, Search, etc, other features using the shell commands such as the example below:

    shell\Explore\command = virus.exe

    When you right click on the drive icon and click on Explore, virus.exe would be launched,
    infecting the whole system, and then it will start spreading by any means possible…

    Just few days ago I borrowed a friend’s memory card to copy some of the photos out. One of my other friend brought a laptop along. We were all anxious to see the photos so I insert the memory card into his card reader and double click the drive letter. Then I noticed that there is a hidden autorun.inf file with MS32DLL.dll.vbs at the root of the memory card drive. I immediately knew that it was some sort of virus. I opened the autorun.inf file with Notepad and true enough, it runs MS32DLL.dll.vbs whenever we access the drive by double clicking on the drive letter. I then checked the MS32DLL.dll.vbs file and it is a virus that adds “Hacked By Godzilla” in Internet Explorer. Luckily it was an easy virus to remove…

    So no matter how careful we are, there are times when we will be careless and we need tools that can protect us from autorun.inf threat when we slack off. So here’s iKill, a tool that can prevent spread of viruses through removable drives.

    iKill application works by scanning the drives for the presence of removable drives. If found, it parses the autorun.inf file for the executables it may run.

    If AutoProtect is enabled, it will automatically delete the harmful files present on the drive. Otherwise, it will prompt you for your permission to delete the virus.

    If iKill found an autorun.inf file at the root of your drive, it will first prompt you if you’d like to delete the executable file. If you’re sure that the executable file is a virus, then click Yes, if not, click No. The second warning will then appear asking you if you’d like to delete the autorun.inf file. Actually there is no use of the autorun.inf in you removable drive. (It is rarely used by some applications to provide some added functionality, like the Wireless Config tool to help setup a home network. But, the applications are limited.) , you can safely delete it.

    iKill works on Windows 98, 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista. The minimum hardware requirements to run iKill is 400MHz processor and 96MB of Ram. For Windows operating system that is lower than Vista, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is required. You can download .NET Framework 2.0 from this link.

    iKill is very similar to what USB FireWall does and it takes up very little memory usage (4MB). Try it, and if you don’t like it, just use a simple registry tweak to totally disable Windows from processing autorun.inf file.

    Computer virus especially the ones that comes from Indonesia usually cause a lot of havoc on your Windows system. It disables nearly every built-in utilities such as regedit, cmd, folder options, msconfig, etc in Windows that can be used to possibly remove the virus. We can remove the virus using rescue disks but after successfully remove the virus from Windows, you still end up with registry editor, command prompt, task manager, system configuration utility and folder options disabled. Antivirus software can clean and remove virus but they still haven’t came up with one click solution to fix or restore the damages on Windows operating system done by virus.

    Good news is there are a lot of tools that can restore all these utilities that has been disabled by virus. One of my favorite is Remove Restriction Toool (RRT). RRT is able to easily re-enable back all the disabled Windows functions that is caused by virus. Well, the virus creators is not satisfied with the mess they create on Windows computer, so they went ahead and create a new variant of a virus that will totally mess up your folder options advanced settings.

    There was a case posted in forum which the “Hide extensions for known file types” option is missing from Folder Options advanced settings in View tab. You can get there by going to Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab.

    And here is another case where the whole advanced settings options is totally corrupted. You will find options such as Gue pikir2x lo itu, Adik lo banyak, Babe lo galak, Gak punya mobil, gue ada pacar baru, Gue kangen berat, Gue masih cinta lo, Gue pandang2x lo jelek, Hidup bersama lo:, Bakalan senang, Balakan susah, Biasa aza and etc… If I am not wrong, these are Indonesia language as they are very similar with Bahasa Melayu (Malaysian language).

    It was hilarious when the first time I saw this but I also pity the person who got infected by the virus that causes this damage.

    I didn’t know how to fix this because I have no experience with this problem. I thought the folder options advanced settings are hardcoded to Windows, but using SFC wouldn’t fix this problem. The only solution I can think of is to do a repair and hopefully it’d reset whatever the virus has modified.

    Now I found an easy way to fix the folder options advanced settings without wasting an hour on repairing Windows. Everything that is displayed in folder options advanced settings can be found in registry and not hardcoded to Windows. The location is at:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder

    I can confirm this because I’ve tried deleting the whole Folder key and the Folder Options advanced settings went blank! When I restore back the Folder key which I backed up earlier, everything was restored back. It is not easy (unless you want to be a real geek and memorize every shell32.dll codes) to manually fix the contents in folder options advanced settings because the “Text” key uses shell32.dll with some numbers.

    What you can do is simply run the registry fix that I’ve exported from a “clean” and newly installed Windows XP and Vista. The registry key will automatically delete everything in Folder key and then restore back the default folder options advanced settings. I’ve also created an EXE version of the reg fix file using Reg2EXE because you could encounter problems in importing a reg file if your registry editor is disabled. I also have carry this fix around with me in my USB flash drive.

    Have you encountered when visiting some websites, you have no idea why you see many question marks and boxes when you think it’s supposed to display text or some sort of characters? This problem is very common for fresh Windows that doesn’t have Microsoft Office or supplemental language installed.

    Here’s an example. mEtRiX from Raymond.CC forum has been having this problem for quite a while. When he use Internet Explorer OR Firefox, it shows “question mark” (?) instead of the STAR Character Display Problem character.

    As for my computer, I don’t see the question marks but I see the STAR icon.

    Here’s how you can fix this problem and start viewing the characters properly.

    First of all, you need to install fonts that cover the characters you need and then configure your browser to use them. On Windows XP, you can install the additional languages installed by going to Start-> Settings -> Control Panel-> Regional and Language Options. In the Languages tab, check the Supplemental language support option(s) you want. Setting both options will install all optional fonts. This adds fonts as well as system support for these languages.

    Next, if you have Microsoft Office 2000 and newer versions, you can get the Arial Unicode MS font, which is the most complete. To get it, insert the Office CD, and do a custom install. Choose Add or Remove Features. Click the (+) next to Office Tools, then International Support, then the Universal Font icon, and choose the installation option you want.

    If you already installed Microsoft Office 2003, put in the CD, select Add or Remove Features, check Choose advanced customization of applications, click Next. Click the (+) next to Office Shared Features, then International Support, then the Universal Font icon, and choose the installation option you want.

    The best practice is to perform a FULL installation of Microsoft Office. That’d solve your unicode character viewing problems. If you don’t have Microsoft Office, I’ve found the link for you to download the Arial Unicode MS font at the end of this article. Just download and copy it to your Windows\Fonts folder.

    By default, your web browser should be smart enough to pick the correct fonts to read the characters. Just make sure you have the latest version of your web browser.

    Most advanced computer users will still need to use command prompt or DOS. Like me, there are some things that I still prefer to do it in command prompt. Some tasks are automated with batch scripts which I write myself. One of very annoying thing is typing the long file or folder names in command prompt. It takes slightly longer to type the long file/folder name and then the worst thing is when I get it wrong which will result me in getting the message “The system cannot find the path specified“. Then the second time I will have to type it carefully to avoid typos. Really a waste of time…

    Without a doubt that most common mistype folder name in command prompt is “Documents and Settings”. Starting from Windows 2000, you can avoid typing the wrong file/folder names because you can hit the “TAB” key and it will auto complete the word.

    Here’s an example of how auto-complete works in command prompt.

    If you are at C:\ and type in:

    C:\>cd doc
    Autocomplete

    And then press the TAB key, Windows will automatically type in C:\cd “Documents and Settings”

    The folders will switch by pressing the Tab key several times. This will work in Windows XP and Vista by default. As for Windows 2000, you’ll need to modify the registry.

    1. Go to Start and then click Run.
    2. Type regedit and click OK.
    3. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor
    4. At the right pane of Registry Editor, look for CompletionChar and PathCompletionChar.
    5. Double click the name and change the value to 9.

    Last year I’ve introduced a very good software called Tracker Checker that is able to automatically check private BitTorrent tracker site for registration openings. This tool will sit in your traybar and automatically do its job at every predefined time. When there’s an opening, a popup will appear informing you that you can sign up. However, there are limitation on that program. When the program is checking for registration opening, the interface will hang and you can’t do much about it other than waiting for it to complete checking all the sites. Another thing is you can’t add/delete/edit the sites from the program.

    This new version of Tracker Checker 2 fixes both the problems I mentioned above. It does not hang when it is checking for registration openings and also you’re able to add/delete/edit bittorrent tracker sites from the program without manually messing with the XML file.

    Unfortunately, the latest version of Tracker Checker no longer include the tracker list. It’s not really that easy to maintain the tracker list because you need to know the exact keyword / string that will appear on signup.php page. TorrentFreak has pointed out that PyroniC from P2P Forums has a modified trackers.xml that contains around 70 bittorrent tracker sites. I’ve tried it and the tracker list is not 100% working because Demonoid is giving false information. It says that it is open for signup but when I visit demonoid, the signup is closed. Well, a non 100% working trackers.xml is better than nothing. For those that doesn’t work, you can just uncheck it or delete it from the list.

    Update: Tracker Checker website now offers tracker list. It is the same as the one from PyroniC.

UDP is faster because there is no form of flow control or error correction. As for TCP, it is slower than UDP but reliable because it offers error correction. Try both to see which would give you a better result in watching videos from Hulu and Veoh.

    There are only 2 cons about using the free AlwaysVPN. The first one is not all service are supported because AlwaysVPN only allows web traffic on port 80, 443, 110, 143, 587 and 8080. The second is it shows advertising at the top of web pages that you view while you are using the AlwaysVPN network.

  • Two Free Sync Tools You Might Want To Use • Raymond.CC

    Recently, I was tasked by my father to find a synchronization software because we recently upgraded to Windows 7 on the family’s desktop computer. Since his current favourite is no longer in development or seems to work under Windows 7, the choice was either to use a batch file, which my father was not too pleased in using, or to find an alternative for it. And while there are always paid alternatives for syncing files across a network, seeing as we are not very well off, the choice was clear to find a free, open source choice. And to be honest, until now, I have never had a need to look up or find the alternatives for it, since we were expecting to use the XP desktop for a long time to come until we lucked into a Windows 7 license from a family friend. Today I’m going to cover some synchronization tools you could use under Windows . In all my examples and screenshots I’ve taken, C: is the main drive of my laptop, and A: is the mapped drive of my Linux server.

    FullSync (6.2 Mb)

    FullSync, despite what the comments say, seems to work fine under Windows 7 in my testing, and is extremely easy to set up. You can set up profiles to sync in both directions, to provide a one way exact copy, a backup copy of one folder, or just provide a differential sync. You can also schedule these profiles to run at a certain time, so you don’t have to worry about it. FullSync feels a bit sluggish as well, I found, but that might just be because my laptop isn’t that powerful. It also has the problem of the dual directional sync profile not working as it should have, copying an empty file to the mapped A: drive on my laptop. It works for Windows and Linux by the looks of it, but I didn’t test it under Linux. While my dad decided that FullSync was a great application, he instead decided for the second application that I found.

    FreeFileSync (6.3 mb)

    FreeFileSync can be installed on Windows, 32bit or 64bit, and works perfectly under Windows 7. It has an option to do real time syncing, while wouldn’t be useful on a slower computer, would no doubt be a great handy option as well. It can detect other files inside the folders, unlike FullSync, so it can also back up subfolders too. I am actually very much impressed with how easy it is to set up FreeFileSync, especially with it’s easy to use and easy to adapt to interface. My dad tried FreeFileSync out and loved it for how powerful it has been with Windows 7, and an added bonus is that it is also cross platform… that’s right, it works for Windows and for Linux. It also seems to be much faster then not only Windows Copy service, but FullSync as well. Personally, FreeFileSync is the present winner of the two, thanks to a great amount of features and the speed in copying, as well as any errors being presented are extremely informative.

    However, since everyone’s needs are different, both tools are useful and it is up to the end user to decide which one might be considered better then the other.   • Run EXE Files As JPG, PNG, GIF Or Under Any Different Extension • Raymond.CC

    I am always curious to know if it is possible to run an image file as an executable file. So far I only know about the double extension trick such as file.jpg.exe. If the user enabled “Hide extensions for known file types” in Folder Options, most probably the user will think that it is a JPG image file but in fact the .exe extension is hidden. That’s why the first thing I do after reinstalling Windows is to enable show hidden files and disable hide extensions for known file types.

    Few days ago I was going through HackHound forum and found a tool called EXE-Forcer developed by steve10120 which claims to make any file extension execute like an .exe file. Before I run EXE-Forcer, I uploaded it to ThreatExpert to analyze and see what it does. It doesn’t do anything but a few antivirus vendor such as PC Tools, Symantec, McAfee, Sophos and Ikarus always flags it as a Trojan.

    I ran it and was presented with a very simple interface with nothing on it. Right clicking on an empty space allows me to add an extension.

    So I tried entering .ray extension and it was added to the program but nothing happened. I right click on EXE-Forcer again and this time I found the Build option enabled. So I selected Build and it prompts me to save an exe file to a location. Now I have another suspicious EXE file and since I don’t know what it does, I analyzed the file in ThreatExpert. This time ThreatExpert tells me that the file EXE-Forcer created will add new registry entries. From the looks of the registry modification, it seemed like it was trying to register a new file type to an EXE extension.

    I ran the EXE file created by EXE-Forcer, and then I renamed a legitimate .exe file’s extension to .ray. As expected, I was able to run the .ray extension as an application after the registry modification.

    This registry modification is pretty simple. It maps an extension of your choice to application. If you go to File Types tab in Folder Options (Can only be found in XP), you will see that the extension opens with %1.

    EXE-Forcer works but already widely being detected as a malicious tool by most antivirus software. In fact, a simple command line would do the job. Simply type assoc.ray=exefile in command prompt will do what EXE-Forcer does. You can replace the .ray in the command line with any other extension you want to run it as executable.     I was looking for a tool that is able to create thumbnails of images in a folder. Although FILEminimizer Pictures is really good, but I am looking for something that is small, free, portable and supports command line. Preferably free so that everyone can use them and don’t need to resort to any cracks or keygens or spending money on it. I also wanted it to be small and portable unlike a lot of bloated batch image resizers which requires installation that you can easily find in Google. Most importantly, I wanted it to be automated without showing the graphical user interface.

    I really had a hard time searching for it because the Google SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages) was showing a lot of shareware or they are really bloated software that needs to be installed. After flipping through a lot of search results pages, I finally found what I wanted and it’s called Picture Resizer. I guess what took me so long to find it is because I kept searching using the keyword “thumbnail” but not the word “resize”. This tool is pretty amazing on how it works.

    Picture Resizer 4.0 is an easy-to-use and free tool for batch resizing of JPG pictures and photos. It can be as easy as drag and dropping a folder with a lot of JPG images to the file and it automatically does the rest, or you can use command line parameters for more advanced scenarios. What make this tool so special is the size of output pictures is controlled by the name of the application. Here’s an example.

    By default the file name for the Picture Resizer is PhotoResize400.exe. If you drag a really huge JPG image and drop it to PhotoResize400.exe, the JPG image will automatically scaled to 400px in height maintaining the aspect ratio.

    The resized JPG images will be saved next to the originals. Names of the new pictures will be based on the original names, with a suffix indicating their size. For example, the resized version of MyPhoto.jpg will be called MyPhoto-400.jpg, where the number 400 indicates the size of the picture. You can go to the official Picture Resizer website and play around with the “Renaming wizard” for more examples.

    Like I said earlier, other than controlling the output of the images based on the name of the application, you can combine it with command line parameters. Here is a official page with all the command line and examples.

    With a command like this combined with the file name, I am able to generate thumbnails on all JPG images found in C:\ drive and save the thumbnails to C:\resized. The JPG images will be resized to 30% with a low compression quality for speed.

    Other than that, if you just run the program by itself, you can actually install a context menu for you to easily resize the image by right clicking on a folder or JPG file and select Resize Picture.

    My only gripe with Picture Resize is that it only process JPG image file types and no other image formats such as BMP, PNG, GIF, and etc. Would be a perfect tool, or can even be used by forensics to digg out all the images saved on computer if the author if this tool “RealWorld Graphics” can make it to support more image formats.
