  • Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool 1.10

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 computers for and helps remove infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. The tool creates a log file named mrt.log in the %WINDIR%debug folder.

Note The version of this tool delivered by Windows Update runs on your computer once a month, in the background. If an infection is found, the tool will display a status report the next time you start your computer.
If you would like to run this tool more than once a month, run the version that is available from this Web page or use the version on the Malicious Software Removal Tool Web site.

  • Kaspersky Offers FREE Tool to Scan and Remove Virus

Without a doubt that Kaspersky is known as one of the best antiviruses. If you check AV-Comparatives.org, you’ll see that its performance tops the chart most of the time. This is mainly due to its large signature database, frequent virus definition updates, smart heuristic analyzer and strong static unpackers that allow it to unpack more packers/ciphers than most antiviruses.

Kaspersky has an online scanner but it can only detect virus but not removing them. If you want to remove, you must purchase their product. Two months ago I discovered a method to obtain free Kaspersky Anti-Virus genuine license that works for a year and I am sure many of you manage to get the free license. IF you visit my site daily or subscribed to my daily newsletter, you wouldn’t have missed this great offer.

If you wasn’t able to get the free license, not to worry because Kaspersky themselves are offering a FREE tool that is similar to Kaspersky Anti-Virus but without real-time scanning.

Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool is a free on demand virus scanner and cleaner. It uses the same technology as Kaspersky Anti-Virus to detect and remove viruses. For a free tool, it is very configurable, allowing you to set what to scan, how much to scan, whether to use heuristics etc..

    FREE Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool

There is another feature called “Manual Cure”. It works similarly as HijackThis. You press the Collect system information button to gather information about your computer. Then Send the report to analitics (forum). The people from Kaspersky forum will then let you know the script to paste on the program and then click the Execute button to fix the virus.

Other than not having realtime on access scanner, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool also doesn’t have an updater function. So you will need to download the whole 16MB package every time you want to use the latest version to scan and remove virus. If you are already using other anti-virus program such as BitDefender or NOD32, you can still install this and run periodically, maybe once a month for a second opinion. This is not an real time scanner, so it won’t affect your currently installed anti-virus program.

Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool may looks like portable because when you run the setup, it actually extracts the contents to “Kaspersky Lab Tool” folder at your desktop. However, it is NOT portable because it installs a service that is set to autostart. If you try to delete the folder, you’ll get the error message “Error Deleting File or Folder“. The reason you’re unable to delete the folder is because Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool has a feature called “Self-Defense”. It is used to protect itself from being infected by viruses. If you want to delete it, you must click Settings at the program and uncheck “Enable Self-Defense” checkbox.

  • Open Source Gaming – Week Two – Simulation Games

So it’s another Sunday in the world, so today’s another day that I cover some more open source games. If you have any objections to this, by all means, that’s fine, but I just feel Sundays are the best day to kick back, relax, and if there’s never an objection, game to your hearts content.

Since these games are open source and since there are found on many many sites, I can assure you, these are free games for all, and can be run on at least Windows and Linux. If you’d like to kick back and relax, try a few of the games out, I’m all for it. Working all the time with no breaks, that’s never fun to do. These “end of the week” posts are meant to help us lay back and relax while perhaps trying out a new game or two.

    LinCity-NG

LinCity-NG is a remake of a remake. It is a remake of the LinCity game, which in itself is a remake of the SimCity games. It shares the same basic principals, that you are a mayor of a city and you are trying to make your city grow in size while making money at the same time. There has to be a balance of taxes and essential services, and try to protect yourself and your city from natural disasters. It’s a lot of work but some people find the SimCity series fun, so here’s your chance to play a remake that isn’t half bad.

    Simutrans

Continuing the remakes as an open source project, Simutrans is the closest thing to Transport Tycoon since it is no longer being released or updated. You take control of a transportation company and basically are trying to make sure not to run it into the ground. It used to be a closed source game until recently, when it was released as Open Source software, but is still a very mature piece of gaming. Much like LinCity-NG, it’s a lot of work, but if you enjoy working for your games to play off, these two are prime examples.

    TuxRacer

I’ll be honest, the last two games I find dry and boring myself, not much of a Sim fan. But for those of us that grew up playing Mario Kart on the SNES will love this. It’s pretty much a complete remake of MarioKart for the PC and supports all the zany add-ons and additions that made MarioKart so successful in the first place. It’s one of those that I play time and time again, I love it to death. If you need any more reason to install the game, it has a multiplayer option as well that can have you playing over the internet. If you ever see Tux speeding past you in one of those games… well, let’s just say it might be yours truly.

    SuperTux

Last but certainly not least, I’m going to include SuperTux. For those of us that grew up with Mario, this game requires no introduction: it’s a perfect port for the PC. You’re trying to save your girlfriend, Penny, from the evil Nolok who stole Penny away from you. Aside from the fact it’s a perfect clone of Super Mario, I’d highly recommend it for all old school gamers and for those new to Mario. It’s hard, it’s frustrating, but when you finally get past a spot where you got stuck… there’s nothing sweeter.

Finally, to finish this post off, I’d just like to say that presently, with two days left, there’s a cross-platform sell-off by developers of some independent games. It’s called “The Humble Indie Bundle” and the causes are just: you’re donating to the EFF and Child’s Play, as well as supporting some of the best indie developers out there. I’m hoping to donate a little bit myself directly to the charities, but you may split it however you wish and pay however much you wish (so long as it’s over a penny). All the games work for Mac, Windows, and Linux, so you won’t have to worry about games for a while. Now, if you’ll excuse me… it’s time to stir up some dust!

  • Open Source Gaming – Week Seven – Puzzle Games

Welcome to another Sunday and another week of some open source games. When people think of puzzles, most people might think of MineSweeper or a jigsaw puzzle. While these are a grand example of how to be ‘puzzled’, pardon the pun, there are more games out there, that test your know-how and will tease your brain. I remember Lemmings back in the day when I was using a Commodore 64, which while extremely interesting and fun, quickly grew harder as you got higher and higher in levels. And after about ten levels, I know at age eight, I had an extremely hard time trying to beat the levels. Sokoban was another classic game on the C64 that I used to play that got difficult as the levels went on. But at time has advanced and as I’ve aged, some games have gotten easier but no less fun. Today’s puzzle games might stump you when you first play, but I can assure you, they are beatable. As well, today is when the I’m announcing the winners for the 12 keys of Hitman Pro and the 5 keys of Windows 7 Firewall Control which will be announced after the main post.

    Enigma (15 mb)

Off the site, Enigma is a puzzle game inspired by Oxyd on the Atari ST and Rock’n’Roll on the Amiga. The object of the game is to find uncover pairs of identically colored Oxyd stones. Simple? Yes. Easy? Certainly not! Hidden traps, vast mazes, laser beams, and, most of all, countless hairy puzzles usually block your direct way to the Oxyd stones. It is precompiled for Windows and for Slackware Linux users (and derivatives of Slackware), however, it is found in most repositories pre-compiled for ease of use for non-Slackware users, such as Ubuntu. It is based off Sokoban, and to me is one of the most addictive games I’ve played in a long time. It works on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux.

    Pingus (13 mb)

Pingus is a Lemmings clone with penguins rather then lemmings, and is literally the only difference I’ve noticed. It’s just as difficult as the game progresses and manages to put out 22 amazing levels that start out very easy as they advance and make you want to tear your hair out. There is also a fan addition of another 105 levels, which can be found here as well as explaining on how you can add them in. If you used to play Lemmings or if it’s interested you, Pingus is an extremely faithful clone that I would highly recommend if you have a desire to replay a classic. Pingus works with Windows, Macintosh, and Linux.

    Robots

Robots is a nifty little game that while lacking a Windows port, is pre-installed under most distributions of Linux that use GNOME as a desktop environment. It also has a port for BSD as well. Gameplay is very simple, every turn you take, the robots take one step closer to you, and they’re trying to kill you. However, you kill the robots by making them collide into each other and make sure they don’t touch you. You also have a teleportor that will teleport you randomly on the map safely for only so many trips as well as some versions that have an unsafe teleportor as well. It’s really more addictive then I explain here, and only works under Linux or BSD.

  • Open Source Gaming – Week One – First Person Shooters

The most common thing most people will miss the most when switching from a Windows operating system to a Linux one is the games and the amount of malware that can run on their computer. Well, I seriously doubt they’re going to miss the malware, but there are common misconceptions about Linux, that is for sure. For one, the need for an anti-malware or anti-virus, because Windows is so widely used and infected. The truth with Linux is that being open source makes it a powerful asset in removing powerful malware off a Windows computer, as well as being immune to the malware itself. But there is admittedly less firewalls, which isn’t so much a bad thing when you realize that that allows for better support of the current firewalls and strengthening of them.

No, the most common complaint of most people I know of that have made the switch fully from Windows to Linux is the lack of games. And while I do admit, there is a huge lack of games when you compare it to Windows, that’s not to say that there is none at all. So I feel it should be my duty for every Saturday for the next few weeks to cover some free games for the Linux based operating systems. To those using Windows, chances are good the games I’m naming have been ported to your platform as well, so this also works out for the Windows users. Please keep in mind that each game has it’s own site linked, so you can check out the system requirements. So let’s begin.

    Sauerbraten

    Cube 2 Logo

If you’ve never tried Sauerbraten under Windows or Linux, let me just say this: you’re missing out on one of the best first person shooters that was ever created. Sauerbraten itself has no official story line but has lots of shooting action for any fan of first person shooters. It’s varied weapons interact with each other perfectly as they would in real life, the machine/chain gun is perfect for automatic take downs but is inaccurate if sprayed, the sniper is great for a long distance shot but useless up close, the shotgun is the reverse, being only useful close up but useless at a far distance, with the pistol being a nice mid-ranged weapon and the rockets being a “blast” (pardon the pun). The monsters are also varied, ranging from Bauul who you will be cursing every time you see one, with their 500 HP and their rockets able to do upwards of 50 points of damage with each blast, to the HellPig whom you’ll simply laugh at as it’s weak 50 HP and 12 points of damage don’t seem that bad when you’re running from that Bauul…

Any way you cut it, Sauerbraten is a rather amazing game, with both single and multiplayer options and a free download for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux.

    OpenArena

OpenArena, while lacking the finesse of Quake 3 Arena, which it’s based off of for gameplay, still has it’s strengths. For one, it’s a free game. For another, it’s like playing Quake Arena. And for a third thing… it still is very actively played online and offline. There is a campaign mode which while can be dead simple on the easiest modes, can work you into quite the sweat in the harder levels. Then if that weren’t enough, the multiplayer faction is quite an unusual way of working, with new maps available only to be played online. If you ever see someone fragging you with the name of HellNoire666 under OpenArena, chances are good that’s yours truly. Just remember one tip while rocket jumping… always look before you leap.

OpenArena does have some small flaws, but the solid gameplay makes up for it. It is both single and multiplayer friendly, and works with Windows, Macintosh, and Linux.

    Urban Terror

Urban Terror’s graphics might look even more dated then Sauerbraten and OpenArena, but don’t let the graphics fool you: Urban Terror is a great game. It’s a somewhat more realistic version of Counter Strike 1.6, in that you can run and jump, but unlike Counter Strike or any other FPS that I know of, these take away from your stamina, as does being shot by bullets. And if you aren’t careful, you can also bleed to death from your wounds! While these might sound like bad things, I personally believe it adds a unique gameplay element to the already worn thin FPS genre. While I don’t play it the most often, it’s still certainly worthy of a look if you’re looking for something to be like Counter Strike in a sense. And at the same time, the unique elements certainly will add a challenge to anyone who’s great at Counter Strike or any other first person shooter. Oh, and did I remember to mention you can wall jump and slide?

Urban Terror is multiplayer only and works with Windows, Macintosh, and Linux.

I’ll be writing up on more games next week, I just felt that since Sunday is considered a rest day for many people, it would be the best day to post up on games for all the operating systems that I know of. Remember, less then 24 hours left for WinPatrol, so if you’d like the chance to win it, it’s still open!

  • One Click to Protect Your Computer Against USB Virus

Disabling autorun in Windows is a must especially if you’re like me who doesn’t run an antivirus. Most of the time an experience computer user is able to determine if a file is dangerous or not by looking at the icon, file name, double extension, file size and where it is downloaded from. No matter how experience or smart the computer users is, some day he/she will be careless. I can never forget that one nasty virus managed to get into my computer and corrupted all my executable (.exe) files because I was “careless” and tired after a hard days work. All I did was open My Computer, double click on the drive letter to access my USB pen drive and poof! that activated the virus via hidden autorun.inf.

The best solution I’d say is to create a registry key that totally disables Windows from processing autorun.inf file. A year ago I’ve shared with you all on how to do that by creating a registry key and then merge it into your computer. If you have trouble editing registry, then here is a tool from Panda Security that is able to do the exact same thing with a click of a button. I know that it works exactly the same as the registry tweak I posted last year by using SysTracer to take my system’s snapshot and then comparing the snapshots from before and after vaccination.
How Panda Research USB Vaccine works

Panda Security has recently came up with a small portable tool that is able to “vaccine” your computer from virus that spreads through external USB drives. The computer vaccination prevents your computer from executing autorun.inf file and the USB drive vaccination creates a dummy autorun.inf file in your external usb drive so that virus can’t infect it.
    Protect USB drive against virus
It is weird that when I ran USB Vaccine on my laptop and saw that my computer is NOT vaccinated although I remembered very clearly that I’ve already disabled autorun.inf via the registry tweak. If I am not wrong, the setting was removed by registry cleaner software. So for those that use registry cleaners, make sure you run USB Vaccine after finish scanning and cleaning.

A lot of newer generation antivirus software such as the latest ESET v4, RISING 2009, Kaspersky 2009 and etc has protection against USB virus. Still, it is always better to disable autorun.inf because if your USB drive has a virus that is yet to be detected by the antivirus software, your computer will be a victim of the virus.

Just wanted to share an experience with you all. In one of my workplace where I maintain hundreds of HP computers, disabling autorun.inf GREATLY reduced the risk of the computers being infected by virus. On computers that I did not vaccine, it took merely a few days for the whole computer lab to get infected by virus and I had to clone them all over again.

  • How To Access ISO Files Using Archiver or Virtual Drive

An ISO image (.iso) is a disk image of an ISO 9660 file system. ISO 9660 is an international standard originally devised for storing data on CD-ROM. We can burn ISO files to CD or DVD. Microsoft has started to distribute ISO files which you can buy online and burn them to CD/DVD.

We can also backup our whole CD in ISO image in case if the CD/DVD media is missing or unreadable. Burning ISO files is very easy. You can use Nero to select the ISO file and it’ll burn. There are times that I need to pull a few files off the ISO without burning it to physical media. I will show you two methods I know which allows you to access your ISO image and pull out the files that you want.

First method to access files in ISO image is to extract the ISO image with archiver software that supports ISO format.
Here are a few archiver that supports ISO format. Universal Extractor, ALZip and 7-Zip are freeware while PowerArchiver and WinRAR are shareware.
    1. Universal Extractor
    2. 7-Zip
    3. PowerArchiver
    4. WinRAR
    5. ALZip

Usually you can simply right click on the ISO image file and select extract from the menu if you are using an archiver software that supports ISO image. For example, I have Universal Extractor installed and right clicking on an ISO image file brings up the menu to extract files from ISO image.
Universal Extractor support extracting ISO image
Many people thought that WinZIP supports ISO but in fact it doesn’t. I’ve installed the latest version of WinZIP PRO v11.1, open the ISO image and I got the error message “Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again.“. Honestly, I can’t even remember when was the last time I use WinZIP…
    WinZIP cannot read ISO

Second method to access files in ISO image is to create a virtual CD/DVD drive and map the ISO image to it. Gamers should find this method familiar because Virtual CDs are alternative to NO-CD patches. It is a solution for not having to put CDs in the drive to play games. A very popular software used by gamers to create virtual CD/DVD drive is Alcohol 120%. Unfortunately I won’t be discussing about it because it’s shareware.
You can instead try using SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive or Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel which is both freeware!
    1. SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive
    2. Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel

It’s very easy to map ISO image to a virtual CD-ROM using SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive. Just installing Slysoft Virtual CloneDrive, you’ll have the option to create the number of virtual CD/DVD drives.
Virtual CD ROM Slysoft Virtual CloneDrive
After creating a virtual CD drive, you’ll notice a new drive letter. Right click on the new drive letter, select Virtual CloneDrive and select Mount. You will then need to browse for the ISO image file to map it to the virtual drive. To unmap, right click on the drive again, select Virtual CloneDrive -> UnMount.

As for Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel, no installation is required. Just download, extract, and run VCdControlTool.exe.
    1. Click Driver Control… button.
    2. Click Install Driver… button.
    3. Select VCdRom.sys which is located at the same folder as VCdControlTool.exe
    4. Click Start button and then OK.
    5. Click Add Drive button and then OK. You’ll notice that a Z: drive will appear.
    Microsoft Virtual CD ROM
    6. Now click on the Mount button and look for the ISO image file that you want to map and click OK. You will now have access to the files in your ISO image.

Important Note: If you have both SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive installed and Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel installed, Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel will fail to mount ISO images. Uninstalling SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive will do fix this problem. You can use either one but not both.

Of course, there are also powerful ISO softwares such as PowerISO, MagicISO, UltraISO, IsoBuster and etc which can be used to create/edit/extract ISO images. If you only need to extract a few files from ISO images, the methods above should be sufficient and you don’t need those powerful ISO software on your computer to do it. Moreover, most of the popular ISO tools are sharewares.

  • Download Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 To Fix Hotmail Loading Problem

I usually stay away from BETA software because I do not want my computer or the software to be crashing on me while I am using it. However, I am more daring when it comes to BETA web browsers because they are able to load up websites slightly faster compared to the older versions. My computer is currently running Internet Explorer 8 RC1 and also just updated my Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 to the latest Beta 3.

Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 was released early December and I am sure everyone has been having problems viewing the emails in Hotmail Inbox. When I click Inbox or any other folders on the left pane, the bottom left will show a yellow “Loading…” message box and it remains like that. Clicking on any messages in my Inbox is inaccessible too. It is a known bug and I’ve tried searching for a workaround but couldn’t find any. The only way I could check my Hotmail is by using Internet Explorer.

    Firefox 3.1 Hotmail Loading Problem

After 3 months of waiting, thankfully the latest Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 fixed this problem and I can now log in to my Hotmail to view the emails using Firefox 3.1! You can try it too because Firefox developers consider this release to be “stable”.

    Download Firefox 3.1 Beta 3
Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform, which has been under development for the past 9 months. Firefox 3.1 is an incremental release on the previous version with significant changes to improve web compatibility, performance, and ease of use:

  • This beta is now available in 64 languages.
  • Improved the new Private Browsing Mode.
  • Improvements to web worker thread support.
  • Improved performance and stability with the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine.
  • New native JSON support.
  • Improvements to the Gecko layout engine, including speculative parsing for faster content rendering.
  • Support for new web technologies such as the |video| and |audio| elements, the W3C Geolocation API, JavaScript query selectors, CSS 2.1 and 3 properties, SVG transforms and offline applications.
  • If you’re thinking of being adventurous in trying out the latest Firefox 3.1 Beta 3, please take note that there will be add-ons incompatibility problems and Firefox will prevent you from using it unless the plugin has proven compatible. You can check out this article on how to enable firefox incompatible add-ons.

  • One click upload to ImageShack(tm), YouSendIt, and custom FTP

So frequently we need to upload screenshots of an error we get when using a software to the software support guys, or even send our cool desktop wallpaper for our friend to see.
The famous ImageShack(tm) offers provide an easy-to-use image hosting service for everyone.
What if you’re a programmer and need to send your code to the people in forums to take a look?
You can upload your code to YouSendIt.

It’s quite troublesome if you always need to open up your browser, Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, browse to ImageShack(tm) or YouSendIt and upload your files.
What if there’s a “one click” way you can do it?
Yes, someone(Kirk Dunlap) thought of this idea and went ahead to create a Windows Explorer Context-Menu extension called Upload Express.

The program is called Upload Express and it enables you to upload images to ImageShack(tm), and application files to YouSendIt. You can also define your own custom FTP server to upload it to your own FTP, if you have one.
After installation, you will get this function by using your mouse to Right Click on your files.
One click upload to ImageShack(tm), YouSendIt, and custom FTP

To upload image to ImageShack(tm), just right click on your image and then select ImageShack Upload.
    Upload to ImageShack
After upload complete, you’ll get the Image URL. This will be the link where your image is hosted.
If you try to upload an application (.exe) files, the ImageShack Upload selection will not appear because ImageShack only host images.

To upload files or image to YouSendIt, just right click on your image or files and select YouSendIt Upload.
    Upload to YouSendIt
After upload complete, you’ll also get the Image URL. This will be the link where your image or file is hosted.
You can upload application (.exe) files to YouSendIt.

Please check carefully on whether YouSendIt and ImageShack will host your files or images forever. If I am not mistaken, some free image/file hosting websites will automatically delete your file once it reaches the amount of downloads or time upload.

To upload your files to your own custom FTP server, you’ll need to set up first.
    Upload to Custom FTP server
As you can see, everything is pretty straight forward.
Upload it to my own FTP server is the same as the way I did it on ImageShack and YouSendIt.
    Upload to Custom FTP server

This software is free, useful and it does its job very well. It doesn’t take up a lot of space and memory. The author of this software will try to implement the following features in the next release.
    1.) PASV support FTP
    2.) Multiple file uploads
3.) Logging for the URLs that are returned
    4.) Flickr support

  • LimeWire PRO Direct Download Link Leaked by Google?

LimeWire claims to be the fastest file sharing program on the planet. There are 2 versions (FREE and PRO) of LimeWire. The PRO version cost $21.95 for 6 months of software updates and technical support or both for 1 year at $34.95. The benefits of LimeWire PRO is you get optimized search results, turbo-charged downloads, connections to more sources and more reliable downloads.

LimeWire doesn’t implement any protection on it’s PRO version. No serial number or any security checks at all on the software. After purchasing LimeWire PRO, you’ll immediately being forwarded a sales page where you can download the PRO version of LimeWire for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, OS/2 and Solaris. Whenever the customer requires to re-download LimeWire PRO, he/she will only need to access the sales page.

It seems that LimeWire doesn’t care at all on protecting its own software from piracy. No protection on the program and the sales page don’t require authentication/logging in. If you know the sales page, you can download the PRO version anytime. As we all know, Google has the smartest bot that crawls millions of websites and guess what, it managed to index the LimeWire PRO sales page as well which enables many pirates to download the latest LimeWire PRO for FREE!

If you know how to use Google’s search strings, simply use the “site” string and look for “sales.limewire.com“. As you can see at the screenshot below, only 1 link appears on the page but if you click at the text that says “repeat the search with the omitted results included”, about 70+ LimeWire sales page links will appear.

    Download LimeWire Pro

Most of the LimeWire sales page indexed by Google will tell you that “This account has expired”, “This account was cancelled” or redirects you to LimeWire FREE download page. Out of the 70+ links, only 4 sales page are still valid.

    LimeWire PRO Download Page

This bug has been around for many years already and I don’t know why LimeWire still allow this to go on. They are already using robot.txt to prevent search engine bots from crawling into the sales subdomain but it is still being indexed because people post the links to forums and websites. This is an important lesson for all of you who are selling ebooks or any intangible products on the Internet. Most of the time your products will be leaked out via direct link (just like Chapter-M). At least password protect the page or install some kind of script to detect unauthorized multiple logins. Also, using random characters on the filename also helps.

  • LimeWire 5 PRO is Out and Direct Download Link still Searchable!

LimeWire is probably one of the most popular file sharing program that uses peer to peer (P2P) technology. It has 2 versions which is the free version and the paid version which claims to give optimized search results, turbo-charged downloads, connections to more sources and more reliable downloads. There are other alternatives such as Ares and FrostWire but I personally still prefer to use the latest LimeWire 5 PRO. If you can’t get the PRO version of LimeWire, then I’d suggest you to use FrostWire or Ares instead.

    Download Limewire 5 PRO

After extensive testing and bug fixing that took 3 months, the latest LimeWire 5 PRO is finally here! It comes with a new look which seemed easier to navigate around and also “sharing with friends” feature. If you have Gmail, Jabber or LiveJournal account, you can easily share your files to your friends in your contact list provided they too must be connected via LimeWire 5.

Other than that, it comes with advanced tools which you can view the connections and also tells you if you are behind a firewall. Another interesting feature is the Bitzi lookup where you can get more information about a file that you want to download so you can know whether it’s safe or not. Bitzi is the home of BitPedia digital media encyclopedia where volunteers share reports about any kind of digital file, with identifying metadata, commentary, and other ratings. The users of LimeWire 5 will also see less junk files so the chances of being infected by virus or trojans from P2P are greatly reduced.

    Download Limewire 5 PRO

I guess that’s about it for the new LimeWire 5 PRO. They did not mention anything about speed improvements but I believe it is already at its fastest.

For your information, you can still search for LimeWire 5 PRO direct download link using a simple “site” search string. Once you get in the LimeWire PRO download page, you can download the full LimeWire 5 PRO for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and other systems. I’ve written about that nearly a year ago and I am sure a lot advanced computer users should know about this trick but don’t know why LimeWire is not doing anything about it.

  • IObit Unlocker the Solution for Today’s Unable to Delete File Problem

The Unlocker by Cedrick ‘NITCH’ Collomb used to be one of my must have software on my computer because it is very helpful in releasing locked files so that I can move, delete or rename the file or folder. Other than it works on files and folders, The Unlocker can also unlock a drive letter which is very useful when when I am faced with the problem of unable to eject or safely remove my USB flash drive. However recently I found that The Unlocker is not as up to date with the current Windows operating system anymore. Don’t get me wrong, The Unlocker still works but it requires a reboot to delete a file that cannot be deleted instantly which is a waste of time.

Recently IObit has released an unlocker software called IObit Unlocker which seems to do the same thing as The Unlocker, but it is definitely smarter and coded to work with the latest Windows 7. Most of the time there are two ways to use these file unlocking software. You can either right click on the locked file and select the software from the context menu, or drag and drop the locked files to the software.

Here is a simple test why I say IObit Unlocker is better than The Unlocker or even FileASSASSIN. The file that I would like to delete is “avast5.ini” belongs to avast! Internet Security. An attempt to manually delete the file from Windows 7 and it reports “You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this file”. I am a local administrator of the computer and I can’t delete the file due to protection by avast!

I right click on avast5.ini file and select IObit Unlocker from the context menu. IObit Unlocker program appears and I select “Unlock & Delete” from the button and click OK for confirmation. IObit Unlocker reports that the avast5.ini file has been instantly unlocked and deleted successfully.

    IObit Unlocker

I restored the avast5.ini file to test with The Unlocker 1.9.1. I right clicked on avast5.ini and select Unlocker from the context menu. I select Delete from the drop down menu, clicked the OK button and it reports “The object could not be deleted. Do you want to perform the requested delete operation at next reboot?”. The Unlocker failed to “instantly” delete the file.

The object could not be deleted

Finally I tried using the famous Malwarebytes FileASSASSIN to see if it can instantly delete the avast5.ini file without requiring a reboot. I drag the avast5.ini file to FileASSASIN, use the FileASSASSIN’s method of file processing and check all the boxes including delete file. Clicking the Execute button and it reports “The file could not be deleted!”.

The file could not be deleted

The only thing you may want to take note of is the optional installation of their toolbar and other IObit software. During installation, the setup will prompt you to install IObit Toolbar for Internet Explorer and Firefox. You can either click Decline or Skip to avoid installing the IObit Toolbar (Most people make mistake by automatically clicking the “Accept” button during installation). Next, you will be prompted to download and install IObit Malware Fighter and Advanced SystemCare. Again, you can click the Skip button to avoid installing those software. If you didn’t know, The Unlocker also by default installs the Bing Bar to support its development unless you manually uncheck it from the “Choose Components” window.

Probably there are still people that will stay away from IObit’s software due to a previous issue with Malwarebytes because of their principles but I personally won’t push away a good software. If it is good, I’ll publish it on my blog and use it on my computer. If it is bad, you probably won’t even read it from here…

IObit Unlocker is free and works on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 on both 32bit and 64bit. It can also unlock drive letters, useful for USB flash drive. Would be really nice if they have a portable version of IObit Unlocker so that I can carry around with me on my USB flash drive.

  • Latest Hiren’s BootCD v8.3 – The King of all Boot CDs

Hiren's BootCD 8.3If you are a computer technician or an advanced computer user, this is a definitely must-have software for you.
Presenting the all in one Dos Bootable CD which has all these useful utilities that can help you do wonders in DOS! Even though this is supposed to be a all in one DOS Bootable CD, it also contains 35 useful Windows tools. I can say that this is a KING of all Boot CDs but this is actually illegal because it contains a lot of retail or cracked tools which you need to buy. You can’t even find this file hosted in the authors site. So use it at your own risk.

This tool is in ISO format, you’ll need a burning software such as Nero that supports burning ISO format. Once you successfully burn the ISO to a CD, pop it in to your CD-ROM and restart your computer. Make sure that you’ve set to boot from CDROM in your CMOS. I personally recommend that you burn it into a CD-RW because this tool is updated every month and you won’t want to waste a CD-R every month and throw away the old version of Hiren’s BootCD when you have the new one.

  • Download Norton 360 v4 with Free 90 Days Trial Subscription

The latest version of Norton 360 4.0 is finally here. Norton 360, developed by Symantec, is marketed as an “all-in-one” security suite. The package includes a personal firewall, phishing protection, ability to detect and remove malware, file backup and PC maintenance capabilities. The previous Norton 360 v3 is based on Norton 2009 products and it’s no surprise that this latest Norton 360 v4 is based on Norton 2010.

    download Norton 360 v4

Norton 360 v4 claims to come with a few new features such as Norton Insight, Norton Download Insight, SONAR 2 Behavioral Protection, Norton System Insight and Norton File Insight but honestly we’ve seen these features more than 5 months ago when Norton AV and IS 2010 was released. There are only 2 new features which are really new that is “Reputation service” and “Web-based Access to Backup Files”. The reputation service adds an additional layer of protection to detect viruses, Trojans, spyware, and other threats. Norton reputation service technology scrutinizes different attributes of files and applications in real-time to determine if they are safe. As for the Web-based Access to Backup Files feature, it allows you to retrieve and restore files that you backed up online anytime, anywhere, from virtually any computer with Internet access.

I ran a benchmark on Norton 360 v4 to compare against the previous Norton 360 v3 and it doesn’t seem to have much difference.

    Application Launch Time
    Norton 360 v3: 1.58582 seconds
    Norton 360 v4: 1.09988 seconds

    Boot Time Increase
    Norton 360 v3: 53.885 seconds
    Norton 360 v4: 54.259 seconds

    Idle Memory Usage
    Norton 360 v3: 3.7MB
    Norton 360 v4: 16.8MB

    Peak Memory Usage
    Norton 360 v3: 99.7MB
    Norton 360 v4: 105.6MB

    Installation Size
    Norton 360 v3: 79.1MB
    Norton 360 v4: 138MB

    Full Scan Time
    Norton 360 v3: 361 seconds
    Norton 360 v4: 390 seconds

Bifrost Trojan Crypted with Incognito Detection
    Norton 360 v3: Runtime = NO, Scantime = NO
    Norton 360 v4: Runtime = NO, Scantime = NO

One thing I don’t understand is why doesn’t Norton 360 v4 blocks the trojan on runtime when Norton Antivirus 2010 and Norton Internet Security 2010 able to successfully block it? Norton 360 v4 should be using the same NAV/NIS 2010 codebase for its antivirus and spyware detection unless I am wrong about it.

Since Norton products are subscription based, you can upgrade to v4 for free if you still have an active subscription. You cannot upgrade to v4 from LiveUpdate because you can only get small update patches and definition files. You will have to download the Norton 360 v4 setup file which is 138MB in size and just install over it. If you’re interested in trying out the latest Norton 360 v4, you can download the setup from the link below. After installation, it gives you a free 90 days subscription. Just for the record, this file was uploaded to the DigitalRiver’s server on 08 Feb 2010 22:42:00 GMT.

  • How To View Banned ImageShack HotLink Image

View Imageshack banned hotlink protection imageI believe you might have seen an image that says “Hotlink has been disabled for this domain.” that looks like the one on the left. This is very common in forums and on some websites. It is ImageShack’s way of making sure the same site is not using a huge amount of bandwidth. They monitor requests from the referrer log which is basically the header info sent whenever you request a image from site hosted on ImageShack. If they find same site using lots of bandwidth with large bandwidth consuming images, they will ban the whole domain.

I know it’s sometimes frustrating because it might be the image or picture that you’re looking for and you can’t see it! Don’t worry, here’s a guide on how to bypass this ban to view ImageShack hotlink image.

    For Firefox browser
    1. Type about:config in the address bar. Settings will appear.
    2. Then type network.http.sendRefererHeader in the Filter bar.
    3. Use your mouse to double click on the network.http.sendRefererHeader and change the value to 0.
    Bypass ImageShack Hotlinking Ban

Basically, network.http.sendRefererHeader controls the referrer header which enables webmasters to know from where the traffic to their site is coming from. By default this is enabled in firefox. Make sure you set it back to “2″ when you’re done viewing the banned ImageShack images because some websites will not work properly.

    For Opera browser
    1. Press F12 key.
    2. Uncheck “Enable referrer logging
    Disable Opera referrer logging

Also, remember to check Enable referrer logging once you’ve viewed the banned images from ImageShack.

    For Internet Explorer
Unfortunately, you can’t disable the referrer logging in Internet Explorer and you have to use third party tools to do it. My advice is, ditch Internet Explorer and start using Firefox.

One final tip, make sure you REFRESH or RELOAD the page in order for the banned images to appear. Otherwise you’ll still be seeing the cached image that says “Hotlink has been disabled for this domain”
