  • Audio Formats: Comparing and Contrasting the Formats

I was asked in the forum recently by one of our users, Luffy, to do a post on audio files. This is because I’ve been dropping a lot of formats recently, such as OGG, MP3, FLAC, WMA, etc, and it gets confusing which is which, which is the best, which could be considered garbage, and so on and so forth. I know there’s a multitude of formats out there, but this article can’t quite possibly cover all of them. What I am going to cover is MP3, OGG, FLAC, WMA, and WAV. Hopefully at the end of all this, you’ll have a base-line understanding of the different formats and can choose carefully between all of them and know each one’s strengths and weaknesses.

Let’s start with the one nearly everyone knows: MP3. It is considered a make-shift standard in the file sharing world, and most, if not all the music out there today is MP3 format. This is due to the fact that everything supports it. Linux, Windows, Macintosh, iPod, Cowon, even the kings of unsupported audio files, Windows Media Player and iTunes support it. And for good reason. It’s small file size comes from the chopping off parts of the music that our ears can’t hear, making it smaller and sound exactly how we’d suspect an artist would sound. The MP3 format is also known as MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, referring to how it is encoded. It is considered a lossy format, meaning you will loose audio data during data compression. You will also notice the audio quality loss when it is less then 80Hz and greater then 18KHz, but normally, you will not notice the quality loss due to most MP3s not being able to be found in those bitrates. While I admit I use the format at times, the majority of my music is in a different format, thanks to audio converters.

Ogg Vorbis is considered an open format by comparison to MP3. It is by default supported by Linux and some media players, such as AIMP2, but is not supported by Windows Media Player and iTunes, along with the mass majority of portable media players on the market today. However, I personally believe it’s perks are pretty good. Like MP3, it is a lossy format, but it is much smaller in size while sounding very decent. It can also be lossless, but I’ve heard reports that as a lossless format, it is not as good as FLAC. To give an example, my OGG music is encoded at 92 kps, the way you can tell it’s quality. With MP3, I’d have to use a 320 kps to have the same quality of music. And to boot, it’s also as I said above, much smaller. To look at an example, compare the Ogg download to the MP3 download of Brad Sucks. It is 51.81 mb to download the MP3 version, or about ten megabytes more if you download the OGG version which is a much higher bitrate version, meaning it should sound a lot better on your ears. It must be noted though, that Ogg itself is a container format, and if you look hard enough, you will find some video OGG files as well as the audio files.

If you really must have the best sounding music, and don’t care for file size, FLAC is the only way to go. My audiophile friends use this format, and I’ve heard a single track can run upwards of 100 megabytes. While it is huge, the bitrate reflects the truth: it is the closest thing to CD and Studio quality you can get. Only a few media players I know of, portable and installable support it, but when you hear the quality of it, you might not want to go back to your lossy music ever again. FLAC is a lossless format, and remains to this day the standard if you demand a top of the line music format. FLAC also supports what is called “Read-Write Compression”, and it’s default settings, from 1 through 8 control how large it is. A uncompressed FLAC file (1) runs usually at around 70 megabytes, while a highly compressed one (8) will run about 20 megabytes, with the average (4) compression coming in at 30 to 50 megabytes.

WMA is an unusual format, if you ask me. It is an audio format produced and nearly solely supported by Microsoft, and is a lossy format. It is a very hard format to find by many means but often is used as the format of choice by music stores that enforce Digital Rights Management (DRM for short). It is a decent sized format, and was developed as a competitor to MP3, however, never really took off in many circles. In all my music, I only have three WMA files, only due to the fact that they are DRM locked and I have to find a converter for them, which I have not found one yet for free. When I find one, I will certainly write about it though. Much like MP3, it is widely supported, though iPod and iTunes, as well as the Macintosh do not perfectly play all WMAs.

Finally, WAV is the last format that we will be covering in this post. It is a large file when it is uncompressed, and is rather hard to find in general, legally or not. It is mostly an lossless format usually used on your Windows computer as those system sounds, such as the Start Up sounds. Personally, I am of the believe that this format is dying out as time goes on, even though as a lossless format, it is of a decent size comprise between FLAC and MP3.

Now what would I recommend the common reader? Unless you have the dying need of top quality music and if your portable media player as well as the one on your computer supports it, I would personally use the OGG format. If you are just a normal user that needs something that works, MP3 would be the recommendation then, because it works everywhere I’ve ever tried. And if you have some dying need to hear everything that an artist had recorded on their CD, FLAC is literally the only way to go.

  • How To Identify Good or Bad StartUp Programs

There are a lot, I mean REALLY a lot of free startup and hijack analyzer program which scans your system for all running programs, autostart locations, drivers, services and hijack points. Silent Runners, HijackThis, RunScanner, HiJackFree and AutoRuns is a few popular ones and each has their own pros and cons. Startup analyzer is a very powerful tool to remove malwares but it requires the user to have an advance computer knowledge to be able to determine which file or process is a malware.

For normal computer users who only wants to use the computer, he/she can submit the log file to forum and have it checked by experts. Have you ever wonder how does the experts in virus removing forum learn and know which file or process is a suspicious malware? Identifying malwares is not easy because the filename itself can be deceiving. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to learn how to identify malwares, here is how you can get started…

Most important factor when using startup analyzers is the ability to recognize which file is good and bad. Unless you many years of experience and very constantly checking file names, you’re not going to be able to identify the good and bad files. Who knows one day you might even accidentally remove an important file such as userinit.exe and you will no longer be able to log in to Windows. I admit that I once removed userinit.exe and I had a hard time restoring the registry entry back. Instead of removing malwares, I ended up wasting more time in restoring the damage that I’ve created.

Before making any changes with startup analyzers, always make sure you’ve done your BACKUP.

When you run any startup analyzer, it’ll take a few seconds to scan all startup entries. An example of me running AutoRuns on my computer.

    Identify Malicious files with Autoruns

As you can see, the first one is userinit.exe file located at c:\windows\system32 folder. Try searching for the filename at all these websites.

  • CastleCops – CLSID BHOList ToolbarList
  • Process Library
  • SysInfo Startup Applications List
  • Windows Startup Online Repository
  • RunScanner Process List
  • TaskList
  • If the program isn’t listed on any of those sites, Google it and look for sources that positively identify it. Some startup analyzers such as RunScanner is able to check the MD5 hash of a file. A MD5 hash is a unique fingerprint of a file. Different files/versions can have the same filename in windows. The MD5 hash verifies that the legitimate file is not altered or “fake”.

If you have any other websites that has a database of startup entries, please share it with us. Good luck in learning how to identify dangerous startup programs.

  • Looking for a USB Flash Drive with Read Only or Write Protect Switch

I have a USB flash drive that is packed with free and portable tools that can help me detect and clean virus from a computer. It is small for me to carry it along and convenient, just plug in and I can run my tools. However, there’s a big problem when I use the tools from my USB flash drive. Since a USB flash drive can be written, virus usually copies itself to the USB flash drive and creates an autorun.inf that has instructions to run the virus whenever it is open from Explorer. Not only that, there are some very destructive virus such as JambanMu / Almanahe that embeds itself to all executable files and corrupting them.

Then, there are times when the user installed crappy antivirus software that automatically deletes my virus removal tools thinking it is a threat. Some examples are Brontok-Washer being flagged as Brontok virus, CaSIR as FakeAV and etc. Sometimes I really wonder why the antivirus program can be so “smart” in detecting my virus removal tools as threat and automatically deleting them but the REAL virus is still inside the computer?

I could burn the virus removal tools in a CD-RW but it is slow and troublesome. So I need a USB flash drive that has a physical write protect switch like in floppy disks which only allows read-only.
    USB flash drive Write Protect
I tried searching in a few computer shops but failed to find any USB flash drive with write protect switch. I remembered that I have a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 4GB U3 USB flash drive and perhaps I could remove the U3 LaunchPad and install my tools into the virtual CD drive.

Normal USB flash drives only creates 1 drive letter but for U3 smart drive, it has 2 drives. One is the normal storage drive where you can copy and delete any files in it and the other one is an emulated CD drive which is read-only. As you can see at the image below, C drive is my computer hard drive, D is internal DVD-RW drive, E and F drive comes from the U3 smart drive.

    Remove U3

In a normal U3 smart drive, when you plug it in a computer with autorun enabled, it will automatically run U3 LaunchPad. The LaunchPad is launched from the emulated virtual CD drive. So I was thinking if I could somehow remove or uninstall the U3 LaunchPad and replace it with my virus removal tools, that’d solve the problem. I did a little research and found that it is possible to hack the U3 LaunchPad.

    1. Download Universal Customizer provided by Hak5, a reputable group of hardcore geeks.

    2. Extract the downloaded Universal_Customizer.zip file.

    3. Copy all your virus removal tools or anything you want to U3CUSTOM folder in Universal_Customizer.

    4. Run ISOCreate.cmd from Universal_Customizer folder and it will create an ISO image from the files in the U3CUSTOM folder. When done, press any key to continue to close the command prompt window.

    5. Now run Universal_Customizer.exe and insert your U3 USB flash drive.
    U3 Customizer

    6. U3 Customizer should detect your U3 smart drive. Select Accept to accept the agreement and click the Next button.

    7. Make sure that all U3 Smart applications, and any applications that access your U3 smart drive are closed. Also, do not eject or shut down the computer before the process is complete. Click Next button again.

    8. Enter a password twice and click Next. The U3 Customizer will backup all your data on your U3 smart drive, format your U3 smart drive, customzie your version of the U3 CD-ROM and finally restore your data.

    9. Click Done button. You have to remove and re-insert your U3 smart drive for the settings to take effect.

Voila! The U3 CD-ROM drive now contains all the files that you copied to the U3CUSTOM folder and the annoying useless U3 LaunchPad has been uninstalled. Now I don’t need to rush to every computer shop to look for a USB flash drive with write protect switch because I already have a pendrive with read-only protection.

  • KiloUpload Sends Multiple Files to Multiple Hosting Server via FTP

Thanks to Lifehacker, DLS, gHacks and many other blog sites, UploadJockey is probably one of the most popular website that offers free service to upload file to multiple file hosting servers today. Well it started off good but there’s a lot of competition nowadays and I think it’s time for an update. When I posted a list of file spreading websites, I missed out one which is KiloUpload. At first I thought it was just a normal uploader website which is able to upload to multiple sites but it actually has some very useful features that’s worth taking a look.

Kiloupload uploads multiple files to multiple servers

First of all KiloUpload supports queuing up to 5 files and spreading to 12 file hosting sites. That means you can select up to 5 files which you want to upload and it will upload one by one until all 5 files are uploaded. Not many file spreader website supports this feature. Out of the 22 which I posted last week, only 3 websites (UploadJockey, X-Mirrors and KoooraUp) has this feature and the rest can only upload one at a time. Uploading multiple parts can be a problem if there is a limit to upload one file at a time. Here comes the more exciting features which are not found in other websites that creates mirrors for your files.

Another annoying limitation imposed on most file spreaders are the file size limit. An example is UploadJockey which has a 200MB maximum upload size because it has to follow the file hosting limit size too. If you have a 1GB file to upload, then you will need to split it into 5 parts at 200MB each. As for KiloUpload, it supports up to a whopping 2GB maximum upload size. All you need to do is compress the file into RAR format and the server will help you split it after you’ve finished uploading a huge file followed by uploading to multiple file hosting sites. In short, you can easily and automatically upload 10GB of files through KiloUpload.

An excellent feature which can only be found on KiloUpload is the FTP upload. Theoretically the best method to upload files is using FTP because that is a standard network protocol that is meant for uploading files, not your web browser. You can create a free KiloUpload FTP account from their website, connect to the FTP server via a FTP program such as FileZilla and upload as normal. Once you’ve finished uploading to KiloUpload FTP, the server will then start uploading to file hosting websites and finally send you an email containing the links to your file.

Uploading files using FTP is faster compared to web browser. On one of my server which has a very fast connection, I was able to upload at a speed of 1.5MBps using FTP compared only a crappy 20KBps using Firefox. (Perhaps there’s a hidden configuration to increase the upload speed in Firefox?)
    FTP upload speed
    web browser upload speed
Using FTP also allows you to resume your upload in case an interruption occurs. Finally, if you’re uploading a compatible video file, KiloUpload is able to automatically generate an image thumbnail.

In my opinion, I’d say that KiloUpload is the BEST website to help you spread your files across multiple hosting server. The only feature that KiloUpload probably lacking is the Remote Upload which I’ve already requested and hopefully it can handle remote uploading multiple big files.

  • How To Clear or Delete AVG Toolbar Search History

The AVG Toolbar is a new tool which works together with the AVG LinkScanner and checks search results of the supported Internet search engines (Yahoo!, Google, MSN). If you select to install the toolbar during the installation of AVG 8.0 Free Edition, it will be added into your Internet Explorer and/or Mozilla Firefox.

AVG Toolbar contains also a Yahoo! search box, which is an integral part of the toolbar and can not be removed separately. Just like any search toolbar, it has the capability to record previous searched keywords and clicking the drop down box will reveal them. Sometimes we’d like to clear the search history because it is just not nice to let other people who is using your computer to know what you were looking for.

Clear AVG Toolbar search keywords history

I tried looking at every options in AVG Toolbar but couldn’t find a way to clear the search history. I went to AVG frequently asked question page and found the answer. Here’s how to remove the previous searched keywords in AVG Toolbar for both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

In order to clear the search history in AVG Toolbar for Mozilla Firefox:

    1. Open Firefox
    2. Type about:config at the address bar and hit enter.
    3. Type avg.toolbar.searchHistory at the filter and hit enter.
    4. Double click the avg.toolbar.searchHistory line.
    5. Delete the contents of the opened box and click OK.

Delete AVG Toolbar search history in Firefox

In order to clear the search history in AVG Toolbar for Internet Explorer:
    1. Close Internet Explorer
    2. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > go to View tab > select Show hidden files and folders. Click OK.
    3. In Windows XP, you’ll need to delete the file COMBOSEARCH.acs. The file is located in C:\Documents and Settings\\Application data\AVGTOOLBAR\COMBOSEARCH.acs
For Windows Vista, the COMBOSEARCH.acs file will be located in C:\Users\\AppData\Local\AVGTOOLBAR\COMBOSEARCH.acs

Delete AVG Toolbar search history in Internet Explorer

It is easy to delete the search history in AVG Toolbar but it’s very troublesome. Please take note that the above solution is to only delete search history but not disabling it. The only way to disable the search history is to not use the search feature in AVG Toolbar or uninstall it. If you decide that you do not wish to use the toolbar, you can either skip its installation during the AVG installation process, or disable it manually in your Internet browser. Disabling or uninstalling the AVG Toolbar has no negative effect on the level of security provided by AVG Free Edition. The only consequence of missing toolbar is an absence of some of the options, and less verbose information about the threats found by the AVG LinkScanner. The main settings of the LinkScanner component can be still configured in AVG Free User Interface.

Let’s hope that AVG will make it simpler for their users in future version of its toolbar.

  • Backup Strategy on Messy Drive using Acronis True Image Home 2012

One of my customer wanted me to help him reinstall Windows on his laptop. Reinstalling Windows is easy but the hardest part is to make sure that all his important data has been fully backed up so that he is able to restore it back after installing Windows. Asking him what he wants to backup and he answered everything while his files are everywhere! I can’t afford to spend a lot of time helping him backup so I had to figure out another solution. Seeing that my customer also have a desktop which he claims that he no longer uses it and also a 1 terabyte external USB hard drive, I figured that it would be best to use Acronis True Image Home 2012 with a backup strategy.

My idea is to backup the laptop into an image using Acronis True Image Home 2012 and save the image to the 1TB external USB hard drive. Then I will connect the external hard drive to the desktop and boot up the computer using Acronis Rescue Media to restore the image to the desktop using Acronis Universal Restore technology.

    Acronis Universal Restore 2012
Acronis Universal Restore allows you to restore a Windows image to a different computer without blue screen crashes

While the restoration process on the desktop is in progress, I will start reinstalling a clean Windows 7 on his laptop. When both the restoration on desktop and installation on laptop has been completed, he can take his time to move whatever files he wants from his desktop to his laptop either through network share or external USB hard drive. If for some reason the restoration doesn’t work, he can always mount the image (Tools and utilities > Image mounting > Mount image) to retrieve his files. Other than that, on worse case scenario he can always restore the image to his laptop since the image is saved to his external hard drive.

    Acronis Image Mounting

Unfortunately Acronis True Image Home 2012 is a shareware that now cost $49.99 for 1PC license. To use the Universal Restore feature, you will have to purchase a separate Plus Pack add-on that cost $29.99. Currently Acronis is having a promo that last until 30th November where by if you purchase a True Image Home 2012 license, they give you the Plus Pack for free. Do note that you will have to access the Acronis’ United States region website in order to get the promo.

Acronis True Image Home 2012 Plus Pack Free

The backup strategy suggested above can definitely be done for free using some other third party software but surely involves a more lengthy process. I needed a quick solution so that both me and my customer will not waste too much time on backup and restore process.

Seeing that Acronis True Image Home 2012 is such a useful application and I still have a bit of budget for this month plus Acronis are having a promo, I will personally purchase a Acronis True Image Home 2012 with Plus Pack license to be given away to one lucky verified member in our forum. The winner will be automatically and randomly selected by the Giveaway system in 48 hours.

  • Recover Lost CD Keys or Serials for Installed Software On Your Computer

Nearly two years ago I posted a free tool called KeyFinder Thing which is able to retrieve serial numbers or CD Keys for 90 types of Windows software installed on your system. This type of software is very useful in case we loose the CD Cover which has the CD key or the email that contains the license key. Although we can always try to contact the software company to retrieve back the lost CD key, but it is troublesome and can be time consuming.

There is good and bad news for KeyFinder Thing. Bad news is the official website is no longer available which means the development for the software has stopped. Good news is you can still find the download link for KeyFinder Thing OR just use another software called SoftKey Revealer which is free and can retrieve much more serial numbers than KeyFinder Thing.

SoftKey Revealer, reveals the CD-Key and Serials for installed softwares on computer. It also saves your money and time, free and easy to use. Currently Softkey Revealer can recover and display over 700 software products. It also has the ability to save or export the cd keys to text or word.

I ran SoftKey Revealer on my computer and was shocked to see so many serial numbers on my computer which some of the software has been uninstalled and removed long ago! The developer of Softkey Revealer is really good in tracing where the serial numbers are recorded in Windows.

SoftKey Revealer is free and no installation required. The only word that I can describe about SoftKey Revealer is, BRILLIANT! This software can be legal or illegal depending on how you use it. If you run it on your computer to recover the lost and forgotten license key that you own, then it’s legal. But if you run SoftKey Revealer on your friends computer or cybercafe to steal their original software license, then it’s illegal you can get into trouble for doing that.

  • Think You’re Computer Smart? Beat OddPawn to Proof It

What makes this logic game different from others? This logic game has something to do with computer and will test you if you’re computer smart enough to figure out both the question and answers just by looking at what is presented in front of you. Some of the test include viewing HTML source code, searching Google, picture editing, sound editing and etc… If you don’t know how to view HTML source code, edit picture and audio, then you need to improve your computing skills before you play this logic game. On the first day when this game was open to public, it already hit 3000 unique players! They are targeting 10000 players now…

When I started playing, it “looked” kind of easy. But when after getting the answers wrong again and again, I started to pay more attention what’s on the screen. I think it’ll be a challenge to all computer geeks who thinks he knows it all but then couldn’t even get far on this game.

OddPawn is a game of logic. You need to see what is presented in front of you and then figure out how you can use that in order to answer the question on hand. Sometimes you need to look really hard to find both the question and the answer.
    Test your IQ

It’s easy to play this game. No complicated registration required. Just click on the image that says “START THE GAME“. The page thing you need to do is provide your name for OddPawn to identify you.
    Play logic IQ game

Please take note that OddPawn recognizes you by your IP address. If you play on the same network, everything stays as you left it. There is no need to save anything as you’re automatically remembered by the system. So if you play OddPawn on another network with a different IP address, you’ll have to start all over again.

Currently there are official hints up to level 7. Here’s a good hint for you to go far in this game… “Google is your best friend“.

Before starting this game, a simple rule for all of you to remember. Do NOT be a spoiler and reveal answers that you already know. If you post out the answers, it wouldn’t be fun anymore for honest players. So keep them to yourself okay?

Last but not least, I hope you’ll leave a comment on up to which level you’ve reached. For me, I am still at Level 4 (feeling shy). I will continue when I have more time.

  • FREE iolo System Mechanic Registration License Code and Download

Yesterday I’ve posted a trick on how to get iolo AntiVirus 1 year license key for free. Many of you have not heard of iolo before and asked me how good it is and etc… My advice is unless you’re not using any well-known top antivirus, then you can try it. I also mentioned yesterday that they(iolo) also have a very popular PC tuning software called System Mechanic which normally cost $49.95. Mike emailed me right after I’ve posted the iolo AntiVirus promotion and asked me whether is there any free System Mechanic license promotion available… I went searching and found it!

System Mechanic is a very useful all-in-one software for computer beginners to maintain your computer in tip top condition. It automatically repairs errors and fragmentation, cleans out clutter, and tunes up your PC so that it runs smoothly, reliably, and up to 300% faster!

Continue reading on how to get your free license registration code for iolo System Mechanic.

  • Remove parasites including spyware, adware, and keyboard loggers
  • Here’s how to get the free license registration code for System Mechanic.

    1. Visit this page and click Continue button. You might need to turn off your firewall or Kaspersky to see the Continue button.

    2. You should see a page with the Item Code SM6-007, Description System Mechanic 6 Free Download Offer with the order total showing $0.00. Click Secure Checkout button.

    3. Enter your first name, last name, address 1, city, postal code, country phone number and email address. You can actually enter fake or bogus information but make sure the email address is a real one. Click Continue button.

    4. Make sure Email Delivery is selected and click Continue button.

    5. Review Order page will load and click Place Order button.

    6. Once you see a page that says “Thank you! Your order #XXXXXXXXXXXXXX is complete.”, check the email address that you’ve entered at step 3. Open the email from iolo technologies, LLC (orders@iolo.com) with the subject “Thank you for ordering from iolo technologies, #XXXXXXXXXXXXXX“‏. Note down the User ID and Serial Number.

    7. Download iolo System Mechanic and install.

    8. Select “I own System Mechanic 6 and can enter my serial number later” and click Next.

    Register System Mechanic

    9. Enter the User ID and Serial # that you noted down earlier. Click OK and continue with the installation.

There you go, another useful commercial software for free. For your information, there are 2 versions of System Mechanic (Standard and Professional) available. The Professional version includes all products by iolo but it isn’t necessary better because with so many products in one, you’re actually installing a bloatware on your computer. So it’s better to stick with the Standard version.

Also, this promotion is only for System Mechanic version 6, not the latest version 7. From what I see, version 6 is meant to use on Windows XP but not Vista. If you have Vista, you’ll need to use the latest version 7. I am unable to find any promotion on version 7 yet but you can get 60% off the regular price if you upgrade from version 6 to 7. It’s still a good deal…

P/S: This whole week I will be posting about getting commercial software for free. Even if you have no use for it, just get the free license and back it up in case one day you might need it. Stay tuned!

  • SignMyImage Protects Your Image with Invisible Signature

You might have noticed that there were a few times the images that I attached to this blog’s article has a watermark. By default the images has no protection at all and anyone can use it and claim that it was taken by them. So a lot of people resort to visible watermarking, a method of embedding information into an image that can clearly shows who is the owner of the image. Depending on the complexity of the image, sometimes it is nearly impossible to remove the watermark from the picture. Where you place the watermark is also important. If you put a small logo watermark at the corner, it can be easily removed by cropping off that part. Best is to put a watermark diagonally across the image BUT professional photographers hated that because it covers up the area which they are trying to focus.
    how to protect images
Another method of protecting your image is to use invisible watermarking. It is the same as above by embedding an information to the image except that it cannot be seen. One software that can do this is SignMyImage. SignMyImage allows you to insert your sign to the image and allows you to check if any image is signed or not. The sign can consists of letters, capitals, numbers, dashes and can be up to 10 characters long. Typical sign looks like “Raymond-CC”.

SignMyImage adds your sign directly to the image data. It modifies picture intensity at few places slightly. The modification is so gentle that it is invisible for a human eye. SignMyImage doesn’t use EXIF(or other tags) or stream properties of image files to sign the image. SignMyImage doesn’t allow to sign already signed images and the best part is the signature stays detectable after jpeg compression, scaling and cropping or for example PrintScreen&Paste.

Try comparing the 2 images below and see if you can spot any difference. The left one is original image and the right one is the signed image. I bet you can’t find any difference at all or notice any invisible watermarking.
    Before Sign After Sign

Embedding an invisible signature using SignMyImage is very easy. All you need to do is load an image to the program, click Sign at the menu bar and select Sign Image. You get to enter your sign which must be less than 10 characters. When the signing has completed, just save the image to a new filename or you can replace the existing one.
    embed invisible watermark to image

The only drawback for SignMyImage is its shareware that cost 14,99 Euros. You can use it for free to watermark images with invisible signature but you cannot use the batch processing feature and every watermarked image will be signed by a visible stamp to right-bottom corner. An idea to overcome the stamp is to maybe add a few pixels of empty space at the bottom so that the program stamps it at an empty area which can be cropped. Paid user also gets to access the Image Spider. Image Spider is a web crawler, that searches through whole internet for signed images. If it finds a signed image, the owner of the image will be noticed.

  • Download and Install Windows Vista MUI Language Packs on Vista Home Basic, Home Premium and Business

Multilingual User Interface (MUI) is the name of a Microsoft technology for Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office and other applications that allows for the installation of multiple interface languages on a single system. On a system with MUI, each user would be able to select his or her own preferred display language.

Up to Windows XP, MUI packs for a product are applied on top of an English version to provide a localized user experience. Windows Vista further advances MUI technology with support for single, language-neutral, language-independent binary files supporting multiple language skins, with the language-specific resources contained in separate binaries. The MUI architecture separates the language resources for the user interface from the binary code of the operating system. This separation makes it possible to change languages completely without changing the core binaries of Windows Vista, or to have multiple languages installed on the same computer with the same core binaries being used. Languages are applied as language packs containing the resources required to localize part of, or the entire, user interface in Windows Vista.
    Change Vista Interface Language
If you bought a second hand computer that is in another language, you don’t need to worry about formatting the drive, reinstalling windows vista, looking for the vista installation disc and genuine product key. Just download and install the MUI language packs. However, there’s one small problem which is only Vista Ultimate and Vista Enterprise version can be installed and switched languages… Here is how you can bypass that restriction.

There are a total of 35 languages that Windows Vista can support and they are Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian (latin), Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish and Ukrainian.

There are 2 ways to install languages in Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise. First method is to go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options, Keyboards and Languages tab . The second method is though Windows Update which is sometimes not working.

As for Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Starter and Business version users, even if you managed to download the MUI language pack, you will get an error saying “The total number of languages allowed XX this computer has been reached.” when you try to install. The next button to proceed with installing MUI language pack will be grayed out and preventing you to continue.

The total number of languages allowed XX this computer has been reached

I found 2 third party tools that is able to override the limit of one language on non-Ultimate Vista editions. Please use either ONE because if you install the second one, it will result in both programs unusable and you won’t be able to revert back to the original language. You should also turn off UAC User Account Control.

    1. Vistalizator
Vistalizator install Vista MUI language packs
Here is how you can change your Vista language using Vistalizator. First you need to manually download the language pack that you want to install. Currently there are 2 versions of Vista which is RTM and SP1. If you are using Vista SP1, please download the MUI language pack that is meant for SP1.

After finished downloading Vista language pack, you can now download Vistalizator from the link below. Extract and run Vistalizator.exe. Click Add Language button and browse for the language file that you’ve downloaded earlier and it will automatically extract and process the file. Once Vistalizator has finished processing the file, click Install button. Now click the drop down box at Installed Languages and you will see that the language that you want to install is in the list. Select the language, click the Change language button and restart your computer.

    [ Download Vistalizator ]

    2. Windows Vista Multi-language User Interface Hacker v3.0
Windows Vista Multi-language User Interface Hacker v3.0
This tool has 2 methods of installing Vista MUI language packs. The first method is to install the Vista language packs on non genuine Windows Vista and the second method uses the MUI installation program built into Vista by Microsoft. The steps needed to install Vista MUI language packs is the same as Vistalizator. You can download the language packs by clicking the Windows Vista MUIs Download button where a help file with all the direct download links to the MUI will be there. After testing Windows Vista Multi-language User Interface Hacker v3.0 and Vistalizator, I’d say that Vistalizator is a much more stable tool.

  • The Linux Threat: Rootkits and how to remove them

If you ever meet me in person and somehow get me onto the subject of Linux, you will always hear me bragging about how Linux is virus-proof. And to date, this is mostly true. Linux is free of 99.9% of viruses. But it has Bliss, as well as a few other viruses written for it. Bliss is like the Linux version of Eicar, in that it has to be manually installed, and even contains instructions on how to remove it right in it’s own official documentation. However: I stress, Linux is mostly virus-free. It is NOT however, immune to rootkits, which are the most common ways a Linux user will be infected with a malicious payload. Once infected, like Windows rootkits, it is often hard to tell unless you do a virus scan. And because Linux is such a small market, where on Earth would you find a big name vendor that will support Linux on such a wide scale? The truth is… no where. You have to use special tools that I’ll show you today how to use and check to see if you have any rootkits on your Linux computers.

    chkrootkit 40 kb

chkrootkit simply needs to be downloaded and uncompressed from it’s compressed file, then you’ll need to open up the terminal to where you uncompressed it. If you uncompressed it to your home directory, you don’t have to much, minus opening the terminal. If it’s uncompressed to a different location, then use the CD command to change the directory to where you saved it. From there, simply type:

    make sense
    sudo ./chkrootkit

and it will go though and scan every file that might be infected. It doesn’t take very long, no more then about ten or twenty seconds, but in that time, it’s checking every possible kook and cranny. Surprisingly enough, it’s a good scanner, if not a bit old. Seeing as most rootkits for Linux are old though, it’s not much you’d have to worry about to be honest.

    Rootkit Hunter 215 kb

Barely a mouthful more then the last one, Rootkit Hunter offers the same kind of idea, but you must install it first. If it’s in the repositories of your Linux OS, simply install it, then in terminal, type as the sudo/root user:

    rkhunter –update

    to update it, then

    sudo rkhunter –propupd –pkgmgr dpkg

if you’re using Debian, Ubuntu, or Mint Linux or

    rkhunter –propupd –pkgmgr RPM

if you’re using Fedora, Mandriva, or Red Hat. This will update the packages to work with the most recent updates for your system. Finally, to run it, either run the Debian-based command, below:

    sudo rkhunter –check –pkgmgr dpkg

or the Red Hat-based command, below.

    rkhunter –check –pkgmgr rpm

Overall, Linux is mostly protected from most things that Windows users have to face on a day-to-day basis. And as many people could imagine, running Linux is quite a different experience then running Windows, so you must be decently well versed in Windows to actually know what you’re doing in Linux, minus certain distros. Overall, there is an extremely low chance of being infected with a rootkit on Linux, so chances are extremely good your scans will turn up clean. However, like in Windows, diligence will pay off; after all, all you need is one package that was compiled by the wrong person… and you’ve got one.

Finally, due to the extension on the Revo Uninstaller giveaway, I can finally award the two licenses. Our winners are: rain and dim059 as selected by Random.org’s random number generator. Congrats to both of them for being our lucky winners!

  • Call from PC to Phone for FREE with EVAPHONE

I just stumbled on a site that is able to make free calls from PC to phone. Perhaps there are other better site or method to make calls from PC to phone, but this is something I just happen to know when checking out some forums and thought of sharing it with all of you.

To be able to call from PC to phone, they’d have to use VoIP service. Voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) is a protocol optimized for the transmission of voice through the Internet or other packet-switched networks. VoIP is often used abstractly to refer to the actual transmission of voice (rather than the protocol implementing it). VoIP allows users to use regular telephone networks anywhere through any internet service provider, and avoids issues on long distance charges that are normally subject to callers. This latter concept is also referred to as IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband, broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

I’ve tested calling my land line and even my cellphone, both rang!

EvaPhone provides Internet telephone calls for free. Our site offers free VoIP call solutions: free VoIP service lets you make PC-to-phone free international calls. All you need is a computer to start making free VoIP calls using Internet to phone. Start enjoying the benefits of Internet telephony right now!

    FREE PC to PHONE CALL

Using EVAPHONE is as easy as ABC. You need to enter www.evaphone.com in your browser and call the number you need. That’s all! Now you see its really easy. As long as you have a computer with a broadband connection and flash player 9.0 or higher installed, you can use EVAPHONE to make calls from your PC. Don’t need to install any third party software. It is advisable to have headset to avoid echo.

When you want to call a number from your PC, you need to watch a short advertisement first before it’ll connect you through. I believe that’s how they are able to provide free calls from PC to phone. However, after calling a few times for free, you’ll get the message “Your free call limit is exceeded for today. Would you like to register?” and “Call limit is exceeded for your IP”.

There’s a saying that goes “there is no free lunch in this world” and that is quite true. You can use EVAPHONE to call land line or cellphone for free but with time and call limit. Calling some countries can only last a few seconds but for calling United States can go up to 6 minutes! You can refer to this list on the free call duration. The free call is not really for chatting because of the call limitation but would be useful if you’re lazy to text using SMS and want to let your friend or family know about something immediately. It could also fun to prank your friends phone number if you have dynamic IP address 😉

  • How to Force Unpin Windows Live Messenger 2009 from Taskbar in Windows 7

One thing I don’t understand is why the latest Windows Live Messenger has to take up a space in the Windows 7 taskbar area? In Vista and XP, whenever you click the Windows Live Messenger’s X button at the top right, it doesn’t really terminates the program but instead it minimizes to the notification area or some people call it the traybar. But in Windows 7, when you click the X button, the messenger icon is still showing in the notification area and also takes up a space in taskbar which I find it annoying! Other than being annoying, I’m sure some of you wouldn’t want your boss to see that you have Windows Live Messenger running at taskbar.

Remove Windows Live Messenger 2009 from taskbar
In Windows 7, they have this new feature where you can pin programs to the taskbar so when you easily launch your most frequently used programs. However this is not the case for Windows Live Messenger in Windows 7. IF Windows Live Messenger is being auto pinned to taskbar, you should see “Unpin this program from taskbar” instead of “Pin this program to taskbar. After doing a little research, I’ve found out how to easily remove Windows Live Messenger from the taskbar and just leave it only in notification tray area.

Just follow the few simple steps below on how to remove Windows Live Messenger from taskbar. Before you start, make sure that Windows Live Messenger is not running. Simply right click on Messenger and select Exit.

    1. Click on the Windows 7 Start Menu button

    2. Click on All Programs and look for Windows Live Messenger shortcut.

    3. Right click on Windows Live Messenger shortcut and select Properties.

    4. Go to Compatibility tab.

    5. Check “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select Windows Vista (Service Pack 2).

Unpin Windows Live Messenger 2009 from Windows 7

    6. Click OK to close the Windows Live Messenger Properties window.

Now when you run Windows Live Messenger, sign in and click the X button, it will only show the messenger icon at notification area but nothing at Taskbar. A good tip to keep your taskbar neat.
