  • Run WindowsUpdate directly from Mozilla Firefox

Two days ago I talked about how to Update Windows using Mozilla Firefox. You’d have to install a third party unofficial plugin from another website which I do not recommend.

Today I found another better and more stable way of doing it.
You can open WindowsUpdate from Mozilla Firefox using IE Tab.

IE Tab, an extension from Taiwan, features Embedding Internet Explorer in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox.

This extension is derived from the famous extension IE View, but they are quite different.
While IE View always open IE-only pages in newly launched windows of Internet Explorer, IE Tab can open them in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox.

    IE Tab

To enable Firefox to always remember to use IE Tab whenever you do Windows Update, go to Tools -> IE Tab Options.
Add http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to “Add Site:” box and click on the Add button.
Add Windows Update to IE Tab

The next time you visit WindowsUpdate site, it will automatically use IE Tab.
    Have fun updating your Windows!

  • FREE Microsoft Private Folder – Password Protected Folder

Microsoft is always lacking of one important security feature that is the ability to password protect your folders. Even in Windows XP, this feature hasn’t been implemented yet. Now, Microsoft is offering a free program called “Microsoft Private Folder” which it will create a folder called My Private Folder at your desktop. Microsoft Private Folder 1.0 is provided specifically for genuine Windows customers, and requires genuine Windows validation in order to download. The software is free, and does not come with product support.
    Microsoft Private Folder
The following hardware and software are required to run Microsoft Private Folder 1.0:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Professional Edition and Media Center Edition with SP2
  • Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
  • Check out the test I ran with Microsoft Private Folder.

First of all, this software has already been cracked by KhaskiN which doesn’t require you to have genuine Windows in order to download and install the free Microsoft Private Folder.
I downloaded the cracked version and the original version from Microsoft. Compared both of the setup files and both have exactly the same filesize. Then I compared the offsets and found 31275 changes in bytes. (Click on the image below to get an enlarged picture)
    Microsoft Private Folder bytes compare
Looks like the cracked version is indeed cracked. I do not have a non-genuine version of Microsoft Windows XP, hence I am not able to test if the cracked version really able to bypass the genuine check.

I downloaded and installed the original Microsoft Private Folder, and a reboot is required. After installation, I immediately noticed a new folder named “My Private Folder” appeared at my desktop.
    Microsoft Private Folder desktop folder

First run requires you to set a password with minimum of 6 characters.
    Microsoft Private Folder change password
After setting your password, you will be prompted to enter password when you first open the My Private Folder at your desktop.
Entering wrong password twice and it will stop prompting you further for password. You need to open the My Private Folder at your desktop again to get the password prompt.

I tried searching for the password in Registry and also in Program Files but couldn’t find the password in clear text. I didn’t go further because I just wanted to know if the password will be saved weakly in your computer and thank goodness it’s not.

I tried to delete the My Private Folder at my desktop, and it shows me a warning “Are you sure you want to delete the My Private Folder icon from your desktop? To restore it later, go to Control Panel.”
    Delete Microsoft Private Folder
Before deleting it, I couldn’t find anything that has to do with Microsoft Private Folder in my Control Panel. Even after deleting the icon from my desktop, still couldn’t find it. Perhaps they missed this function. Can’t blame them because it’s only version 1.
To restore back the icon in your desktop, just run Microsoft Private Folder 1.0 from your start menu, enter your password, and you should see a lock icon at your traybar.
    Microsoft Private Folder tray
Just right click on the lock icon, go to Options, and select “Show Desktop Icon”.

In my opinion, it’s a very basic folder protector and it works. Saves you from buying some shareware when you really need to password protect your folder.

  • Fix Windows is Starting Slow Logon Caused by wlnotify.dll

mEtRiX, our forum moderator had an annoying computer problem for weeks which is it takes longer than usual to log on to Windows. He has already scanned his computer with Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 and Spybot but it did not fix the problem. He was only able to tell me that this slow logon issue is caused by executing wlnotify.dll file on startup. Searching in Google about wlnotify.dll reveals that it is a process info for Common DLL to receive Winlogon notifications.

    Windows Slow login wlnotify.dll

To know which file is causing the slow logon problem, you’ll have to enable verbose status message, a hidden feature in Microsoft Windows. Although we already know which file is the cause of the problem, we’ve had a pretty tough time trying to fix it as it wasn’t that easy. We couldn’t even find any solution to this problem in Google and other tech forums. So it’s up to us and yes, we finally found the reason why the “Windows is starting” screen get stuck because of wlnotify.dll file.

I’ll write the troubleshooting steps so you’d know what to do when you have a similar problem. Sometimes when we need to troubleshoot a problem, we’ll have to go through step by step to narrow down the problem.

    1. Virus, trojans and spywares.
    – I know mEtRiX is very careful not to simply run any untrusted program, so it shouldn’t be a virus or spyware that is causing this. Moreover, he has already ran a full scan with KIS 2009 and Spybot.

    2. Windows Safe Mode
    – Booting into safe mode is very important because it shows that whether this problem is caused by some software or drivers. Unfortunately the problem still exist when he tried booting into Safe Mode.

    3. wlnotify.dll file
    – Another possible cause for this problem is a corrupted wlnotify.dll file. We’ve both checked the size of the DLL file and it matches at 92,672 bytes.

    4. Deleting wlnotify.dll
    – Tried renaming the file and Windows automatically replace a new wlnotify.dll file in C:\Windows\System32\ folder.

    5. Disabling Network Adapters
    – Safe Mode loads up networking support. Since wlnotify.dll file is for winlogon notifications, so I thought maybe Windows calls home whenever it is trying to log in. Both wireless and wired adapters are disabled in Device Manager, boot to Safe Mode again, still the same problem.

    6. TuneUp Utilities
    – mEtRiX mentioned that he has TuneUp Utilities and he guessed that it might be the settings there that is causing the problem. So I installed TuneUp Utilities on my test system and configured everything the same as he has configured on his computer. Restarted and my test system was able to boot up without issues.

When I nearly ran out of idea on what else to check, I figure that I should also try to look for any errors in Events Viewer. Went to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Clicking on Application, Security, System or Internet Explorer shows “Unable to complete the operation on “System”. The interface is unknown.”. Turns out that mEtRiX had Event Viewer disabled from services. I asked him to enable back Event Viewer from services and then restart. Amazingly the slow logon problem which is caused by wlnotify.dll is gone! I tried replicating the problem on my desktop by disabling Event Viewer on my test system and indeed the log on time did take slightly longer than usual. Re-enabling Event Viewer solved the problem.

If you’ve enable verbose status message and found that wlnotify.dll takes very long to execute, you should check your Event Viewer service and make sure that it is started. To check, go to Start > Run, type services.msc and click OK. Look for Event Log at the name column and double click. Make sure that the Startup type is set as Automatic and Service status is Started.

  • Disable XP SP 3 and Vista SP1 From Windows Automatic Updates

There is still no fixed date on the release for Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1. The whole world is eagerly anticipating the release of this 2 service packs as everyone hoping that it would bring new features and also fix many bugs. Actually both Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1 Release Candidate (RC) version has been released which you can download from Microsoft and install it on your computer but I chose not post anything about it on this site. Although it’s official release from Microsoft, but it’s still a Release Candidate version. I personally think that it’s OK to install beta software but not installing update patches for operating system. Operating system is the MAIN thing for a computer. Once it is unstable, installing any software is useless until you fix it.

Both service packs will definitely be released this year and I don’t want my company’s workstations to either manually download the service pack from Windows Update Web site or via Automatic Updates. Reason is because I don’t want them to waste the bandwidth and slow down internet connection. Windows XP SP3 RC (windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe) is 336.1MB in size and Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate (Windows6.0-KB936330-wave0-X86.exe) is 436.3MB. If there are more than 10 workstations, a lot of bandwidth would go to waste.

So now is the time to start thinking about blocking the automatic install of these service packs on computers around your local area network.

You need to access registry editor and add a new value to block auto download and installation of service pack. Go to Start > Run and type regedit. Navigate to:

Right click > New > DWORD Value. Enter name as DoNotAllowSP. Double click the newly created DWORD value and set the value data as 1.

    Block Service Pack installation

If you do not like to mess with registry, you can use this simple and useful tool called Service Pack Blocker from IntelliAdmin.

    Block Service Pack Download

Just select “Prevent Vista SP1, or Windows XP 3 from installing” and click Apply. You can also use this tool to revert back to the original setting to allow Vista SP1, or Windows XP 3 to install.

  • How To Monitor for Registry and File Changes in Windows

Usually when you install or run a software, it will write settings and information to the registry and to files. The location of where it writes in registry and files are unknown because it is done invisibly in background. Most of the time I troubleshoot software problems by manually checking the registry and files that are associated with the software.

So how I know which file and registry location is associated with the software? You can run the installer or program with Sandboxie to investigate the contents or you can also do it with registry and drive snapshot program. Other than snapshot program, you can also use registry and file system monitoring software.

This is also a method used by crackers to extend software trial period. For example, they’ve used until the trial period has expired and then they find and remove the entry that records the day they had been using the software. Once removed correctly, the trial period will reset and allow them to use the software for another 30 days.

Regshot is a registry compare utility that allows you to quickly take a snapshot of your registry and then compare it with a second one – done after doing system changes or installing a new software product.
    Check registry changes
The changes report can be produced in text or HTML format and contains a list of all modifications that have taken place between snapshot1 and snapshot2. In addition, you can also specify folders (with sub folders) to be scanned for changes as well. What I really like about Regshot is FAST. It took only 6 seconds to take the first snapshot of my registry, then another 6 seconds for the second snapshot. Regshot is only 72KB in size. Small, free and open source.
    [ Download Regshot ]

There is another similar program that does the same thing called InCtrl5. It is very old and slow compared to Regshot.
    Monitor Registry File Changes
If you want to download InCtrl5, you can get it here.

A very useful tool that works with RegShot and InCtrl5 is UNDOReg. UNDOReg analyzes the report generated by RegShot, InCtrl and System Mechanic, and deletes referenced registry keys.
    Undo Registry Changes
Just click on the Open Report button and load the TEXT REPORT FILE generated by either RegShot, InCtrl or System Mechanic.
    [ Download UNDOReg ]

Finally, there’s also Process Monitor which is an advanced monitoring tool for Windows that shows real-time file system, Registry and process/thread activity. It combines the features of two legacy Sysinternals utilities, Filemon and Regmon.
    Microsoft Process Monitor
This can be a bit tough to use because once you start monitoring, the screen will be flooded with events. You might want to use Filter (Ctrl+L) to filter out unwanted captured events.

[ Download Sysinternals Process Monitor ]

There you have it. 3 types of free program to help you monitor for registry and files changes in Windows.

  • Automatically Check Private BitTorrent Tracker Site for Registration Openings

There are easily hundreds of torrent tracker sites and I’ve introduced a software that auto search for torrents on multiple sites without going site after site to perform a search. There are also quite a number of PRIVATE bittorrent tracker sites which has a lot of fast seeders and the download speed can easily maxed out your download bandwidth. I’ve got an account on TorrentBytes before, that’s why I know. However, these private torrent tracker sites are very strict. You MUST maintain a good ratio in order to continue being a member of that site. When it drops below 0.5, you account will be banned. Problem is, the sign-ups don’t come by very often and you wouldn’t know when they will open their bittorrent tracker site for registration. Here’s how you can automatically check for registration openings on a whopping “66″ torrent tracker sites!

Tracker Checker is a small and easy to use program that regularly checks the status of private BitTorrent trackers for open registrations.
    Register Torrentbytes

When a tracker with open registrations is found, a popup informs the user. Just bring up the software from the traybar, double click on the tracker site that says “OPEN!”, and your default browser will be launched together with the sign up page.
    Sign up torrentbytes

Virtually all popular private trackers, such as TorrentBytes and FileList, are supported. The author’s website is in Slovenian, but the software is in English. The .NET framework is needed to run this program. You can also set the number of seconds for the checking period.

Very simple, straight forward, free and useful program.

    [ Download Tracker Checker v1.2 ]

  • Auto search Torrents on multiple websites

Torrent tracker websites only host .torrent files and the files that you download through torrent are from users.
There are easily more than 10 torrent tracker websites offering .torrent files. You can’t possibly find everything on 1 torrent tracker website because not all files are available in the tracker site.
Some files have low seeders making your downloading speed very slow. Sometimes you notice that it doesn’t even start even after days of downloading which could probably mean that no one is seeding this file that you’re trying to download.
So the best way is to find another torrent tracker website that has a lot more seeders to speed up your download.
Would you visit torrent tracker site after site to search for a torrent? You might if you haven’t found this program.

    Torrent Harvester
Torrent Harvester, a program which will perform a search for Torrents on multiple websites returning all results in a single list. Just enter some text to search on, press enter or click the search button and the list will fill with torrents found. Right clicking a torrent in the list will bring up a menu to download the torrent and start your BitTorrent client.

Torrent Harvester eliminates the need to use your web browser to check many Torrent sites if you are looking for a particular torrent. This means annoying pop-ups, advertising, spyware and virus threats are eliminated. Torrent Harvester is also flexible enough to allow for the addition of new search engines, and alteration of existing engines in the case of site redesign.

Torrent Harvester currently supports the following 173 engines. Engines marked with an asterisk (*) have been added since the release of version 0.7b and are available via the update feature from within Torrent Harvester

  • Check 182 Private Torrents Registration with TORC

So far I’ve introduced the software method of checking for private torrents registration opening with Tracker Checker and also a web based method from BTRACS and TrackerChecker. The web based method still works but the software method Tracker Checker is no longer available. When you visit Stamcar.com, you’ll be forwarded to zda2009.fri.uni-lj.si.

If you’ve been using Tracker Checker for Stamcar, here is a replacement that is very fast and it supports liveupdate for the tracker list and program. If you know of a torrent site that is not listed in the program, you can even manually add it yourself by using keywords.

    Torrents Open Registrations Checker
    Torrents Open Registrations Checker Features:

  • Super Fast checking
  • Customizable Timing
  • Hotkey Support
  • Use Ctrl+A to Select All
  • Use Ctrl+Z to Deselct All
  • Use Delete Button to delete the selected entry
  • Double Click on Entry in List to Open the Websites Registration Page
  • Press Enter to directly start searching
  • Press F1 to open readme file
  • Press F5 to refresh/reset the list
  • Comprehensive Toolbar and Menubar
  • Press on Start Search button for manual searching or Select The Timer Button for automatic searching
  • Simple Text File Operations so fast in process
  • List Sorting
  • Tracker description
  • Custom Icons
  • Advanced Conditions
  • Filters
  • Grouping
  • Auto Tracker Adder
  • Opportunity to place your ads
  • Automatic Updates
  • TORC is really fast in checking for opening registrations. It took only 35 seconds to finish scanning all 182 torrent sites. Those that shows a checkmark means that the registration is open. Double click on the link and the registration page will open in your default web browser. By default TORC doesn’t auto checks for registration opening. You’ll have to go to Options > Settings and enable the Repeat Timer. You can check out FileShareFreak for more complete tutorial on how to use TORC. TORC requires .NET Framework 2.0 installed in order to run. Would be nice if TORC is able to handle automatic registration when it finds an opening for torrent tracker of your choice.

To think about it, you can even use this tool to monitor a website for downtime by setting it to check for a specific keyword that is on a page. When the keyword cannot be detected, that means something is wrong with the website and it will notify you by playing a sound and also a popup message. There are 2 types of package to download, either the portable version or the installer. I always prefer portable version over installer because it does not write extra information to registry.

  • 500+ Private BitTorrent Sites Automatically Monitored for SignUp Openings

Bittorrent file sharing technology has been around for many years already and it is one of the main source for computer users to get their favorite music, movies, ebooks, tv shows, software, and etc. As long as it is an intangible product, most of it can be found in bittorrent sites. There are public bittorrent tracker site such as the famous The Pirate Bay and Mininova but these public torrent sites tends to have too much fake stuff such as embedded trojans or even worst, fake torrents uploaded by Anti-Piracy Organizations to catch you red-handed for downloading pirated materials.

There are also a lot of private bittorrent trackers that are more reliable and offers faster downloading speed due to the members seeding the torrent to try to get a good ratio. The chances of being caught by anti-piracy organization also lessen compared to public torrent trackers. However, these private torrents are not easy to get in. You either have an invitation where your friend invites you in or you just have to wait until they open up the registration to public.

A year ago I introduced a small program called Tracker Checker that regularly checks the status of private BitTorrent trackers for open registrations. The only annoyance is you have to keep the program running all the time on your computer. Here is another method where you can monitor 500+ private bittorrent tracker sites for signup openings without installing or running any software on your computer.

Bittorrent TRackers Automatic Checking System aka BTRACS is an automatic information site which periodically checks closed community bittorrent trackers for being open for signup. Some closed community bittorrent trackers’ signups are closed and are “invite only” (meaning, if you have a user, you can invite your friend to join or a friend can invite you). The BTRACS main page refreshes every 10 minutes and shows a list of bittorrent private trackers open for signup. If you know of a closed community bittorrent tracker you want to share with the rest of the world, you can add it to BTRAC’s database and it will checked with the rest of the bittorrent trackers.

    btracs

Currently, there is a total of 308 bittorrent trackers in the BTRACS database and 98 bittorrent trackers are open for signup. BTRACS also shows the Alexa ranking of the added bittorrent site on the list. Websites with a rank closer to the top (number 1) are so to speak more popular than others because they seemingly have more traffic, meaning more people view these websites, meaning they update frequently, meaning you WANT to go visit those websites. BTRACS website contains adult advertisements. Just thought you should know this before you visit the site. Thanks to Pablos for sharing this with us!

    [ Visit BTRACS ]

    Another similar site is TrackerChecker.org.
    TrackerChecker
Currently it has 500+ private bittorrent tracker sites in its database and 200+ private bittorrent trackers are open for signup. Unlike BTRACS, TrackerChecker is able to display all trackers that are in the database so you can check if the private torrent that you want to check is in the list or not. If not, you can always add the the tracker to the list using their simple form. It also supports sorting of the list based on the name, status or last updated information.

  • Easily Configure Synergy with Xhirl Synergy Wizard

Few months ago I’ve written an article on how to share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without using special hardware. It can be done using Input Director (freeware), Synergy (freeware) and Multiplicity (shareware). If you’ve used either Input Director and Multiplicity before, you’ll notice that Synergy is a bit harder to set up. I can honestly tell you that I didn’t even get to test Synergy because I couldn’t get it to work. I kept on getting the error “WARNING: a client with the name “COMPUTERNAME” is already connected.”

I gave up and didn’t put any extra effort in getting Synergy to work. Today I found a very useful tool developed by James A Kinsman on Christmas Eve Day and Christmas Day. It is a nice setup Wizard for Synergy. Sort of like “Synergy for Dummies”. I’ve tested the wizard and it took less than 1 minute to get my laptop and desktop sharing one single mouse and keyboard.

With Synergy, all the computers on your desktop form a single virtual screen. You use the mouse and keyboard of only one of the computers while you use all of the monitors on all of the computers. You tell synergy how many screens you have and their positions relative to one another. Synergy then detects when the mouse moves off the edge of a screen and jumps it instantly to the neighboring screen. The keyboard works normally on each screen; input goes to whichever screen has the cursor.

In this example, the user is moving the mouse from left to right. When the cursor reaches the right edge of the left screen it jumps instantly to the left edge of the right screen.
    Synergy

After installing Synergy, you get to choose whether to share or use a shared keyboard and mouse. I select Share this computer’s keyboard and mouse (server) and click the Configure button. With one look, I couldn’t really understand how to configure Synergy. I don’t know what is the percentage doing there, what’s left, right, top, bottom. Totally confusing…
    Configure Synergy

To simplify Synergy’s configuration and get it working, just use “Xhirl Synergy Wizard“. Just follow the few simple steps below.

On the computer that is going to be used to control other machines with its keyboard and mouse
    1. Download Xhirl Synergy Wizard and extract the file to where Synergy is installed. By default Synergy is installed in C:\Program Files\Synergy.

    2. Run XhirlSynergyWizard.exe, make sure Primary is selected and click Next.

    3. If the computer that you will be controlling is on the left, the click on the left dropdown box to select the computer name (or you can manually enter the computer name or IP address). Do the same if you have a computer on the right. Once you’re done, click Next.
    Synergy Primary Setting

    4. On the next screen, you get to configure Screen Switching and Extra Synchronization options. You can leave it blank if you are unsure and click Next.

    5. Here you have Advanced Connection options. Again, if you’re unsure, just click the Next button, and click Finish.

    6. You will get a confirmation window saying that this computer is set up to be the primary computer… Click OK.

    7. When asked if you’d like to copy the configuration file synergy.sgc to My Documents folder, click Yes.

    8. The configuration is done. Click Close and Synergy is already running in background.

On the computer that will be controlled using another machine’s keyboard and mouse.
    1. Download Xhirl Synergy Wizard and extract the file to where Synergy is installed. By default Synergy is installed in C:\Program Files\Synergy.

    2. Run XhirlSynergyWizard.exe, select Secondary and click Next.

    3. Click the dropdown box and select the primary computer name or IP address. If it is not listed, you can manually type the computer name or IP address. Cick Next.
    Synergy Secondary Setting

    4. Here you have Advanced Connection options. If you’re unsure, just click the Next button, and click Finish.

    5. You will get a confirmation window saying that this computer is set up to be the secondary computer… Click OK.

    6. When asked if you’d like to copy the configuration file synergy.sgc to My Documents folder, click Yes.

When you’ve completed all steps above, you should see that the Synergy green circle tray icon with the “lightning bolt” connected symbol.
    Synergy Connected Lightning Icon

To control another computer, simple move your mouse right to the edge of the left and right screen and you will see your mouse cursor jumps instantly to the left edge of the right screen. I showed my girlfriend how Synergy works while testing it and she was as impressed as I am.

  • FREE PPTminimizer 4.0 Genuine License to Compress PPT and DOC Files

Nearly every computer users knows that Microsoft Word is used to create word documents and Microsoft Powerpoint to create slideshow presentation. When you have a lot of slides in powerpoint or pages in word document, the size of the file will increase accordingly. You can of course compress the file with your favorite archiving software such as WinZIP but you will need to extract before you can view the file. A good solution to reduce the size of powerpoint slides and word documents is to compress with PPTminimizer.

PPTminimizer has been used by many world leading big corporate companies such as Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Wells Fargo, IBM, Intel, HP, Dell, McAfee, Nero, Kaspersky, Boeing, Airbus, Vodafone, Nokia, Shell, Mcdonalds, and etc.

The latest PPTminimizer 4.0 normally cost €29,95 or $42 but it’ll be FREE if you follow the steps which I am about to show you.

PPTminimizer reduces PowerPoint and Word files by up to 98% of their initial size using an intelligent compression technique. The software preserves the original file format so files can be edited without having to unzip them. The optimized files, without any quality loss, are then much smaller, safer and ideal for sharing. Mailboxes, servers and networks are relieved and loading time is accelerated.

    FREE PPTminimizer serial

    PPTmimizer Features:

  • File compression by up to 98%
  • Compresses all PowerPoint presentations from PowerPoint 97 to 2007 (PPTX)
  • Compresses all Word documents from Word 97 to 2003
  • Keeps the original file format – no unzipping required
  • Compresses StarOffice and OpenOffice presentations and documents provided they are saved in a Microsoft format
  • Compact edition runs directly from CD or USB flash drive – no installation required
  • Integrated search function
  • “Drag & Drop” files directly into PPTminimizer to optimize several files at once
  • 4 different compression levels
  • Add-ins for Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Windows Explorer
  • Fully compatible with Windows Vista
  • Developer Version (SDK) available (majority of programming languages are supported: C#, C++, Delphi, Visual BASIC, VB.net, etc)
  • Follow the steps below to get your free genuine license key code for PPTminimizer 4.0:

    1. Go to this page (Link Removed Due to Request)

    2. Enter your Name, E-mail and click Request License button. You can enter false information because the serial no. will be generated and shown at the next page.

    3. Download PPTminimizer 4.0 setup file and install on your computer.

    4. Run PPTminimizer, and click Enter registration Code button. Enter the given Serial Number, Field #1, Field #2 and click the Register button.
    Register PPTminimizer

    5. You should see the dialog box stating “Thank you for registering, the registration was successful!!!”. Enjoy the fully licensed PPTminimizer to compress powerpoint and word document files!

I’ve tried compressing a 9.89MB .PPT file with PPTminimizer and the file size was reduced to 3.44MB. That is a total of 65.2% file size reduction! I tried zipping the PPT file with maximum compression but it was only down to 8.88MB.

In another test on 14.35MB .DOC file with PPTminimizer, the word document file size was reduced to only 11.85MB. When I tried opening the DOC file, I got the error message “A table in this document has become corrupted.” When I zip the word document file with maximum compression using PowerArchiver, the file size went down to 11.3 MB which was even better than PPTminimizer.

So make sure that you test the compressed files first before taking it for a presentation or sending the compressed PPT or DOC files to anyone because there will be times when PPTminimizer wouldn’t compress the file correctly.

  • MiPony – The new way to download from Rapidshare

I pride myself on being one that doesn’t use warez and will download from Rapidshare and Megaupload only if a Linux distro or a legal source of information is only available that way or if it’s faster that way. And seeing as sometimes, a distribution’s site is overwhelmed by people trying to download it, like Ubuntu, or has no official download anymore because it has been discontinued, like Yggdrasil Linux, it has grown to be a necessity for my connection. It is only at these times that anyone would catch me downloading from direct downloads, rather then official sites. And until recently, I was using FreeRapid because of the wide selection that it was able to download from. Then when I decided to download a copy of Debian 5.04 that was hosted on Hotfile, I was facing an dilemma: for some reason or another, when I tried downloading it, it wouldn’t work. Instead, it crashed and wouldn’t allow for any more downloads from FreeRapid. I could email the makers of FreeRapid or post on their forum, I admit, but I figured I might switch to a new application that would be quicker then to get it fixed. And it just so happens that I found one that I will be writing about today.

MiPony is a small application, weighing in at about 5 mb once installed without the toolbar but once installed, you’ll find a lot of extra features that make it more powerful then FreeRapid to make up for the lack of add-ons to download from. The first thing you might notice is the fact that it has a browser built right into it. Yes, it’s Internet Explorer based, but I’ve never seen anything like it in all the time I’ve use FreeRapid. This browser will allow for instant downloading when you click on any supported link, including Rapidshare, Mediafire, Hotfile, MegaUpload, DepositFile, Uploading, Storage.to, FileFactory, and EasyShare. It also supports Premium accounts for the above, so if you’re lucky enough to get or win one, you can use it in this application, though it does support more then 45 different sites aside from these. It also supports file joining and unraring files automatically once the downloads are done as well as putting in the passwords for the files, on top of shutting down the computer once the downloads are done. It also supports the standard FreeRapid working of monitoring the clipboard to watch for files to download. It’s options are clear and easy to use as well as making it an extremely powerful downloader application.

    MiPony Main Screen

If you do a lot of downloading via direct links like Rapidshare and Megaupload, I would still recommend FreeRapid over any other, due to the fact that it works on every operating system that can run Java and it’s wide plugin base, but if you’re looking for one that is a very powerful replacement because FreeRapid somehow failed, MiPony is definitely a program to look into. MiPony needs the .NET framework to work but works on my slow laptop, so I imagine if you have a recent Windows OS, it should be able to work fine.

    MiPony Downloader – (5 mb)

  • Installing via Terminal and Compiling Files from Source

Installing files under Windows is simple: a double click on the file, then repeated hitting of the “next” button until you get to that license agreement, before you accept it. Once accepted, it does it’s thing, then hocus pocus, the job’s done and you can use that new application/game. But in Linux, I’m afraid life’s not that simple.

While we do have the Ubuntu Software Center, the Add/Remove programs of Gnome, and other such applications to which we have a graphical shell, like everything in Windows, we can also run these programs from command line. And while I can’t tell you that this way is better (it can be helpful to troubleshoot when things go wrong), if you are forced one day to use a terminal, you can know what you’re doing without even confronting those manual pages. Plus, the honest truth is most times you are able to install something the same way if you use the terminal. Linux Mint, Xubuntu, Debian, FreeSpire… seeing as they’re all based on the same base, if you learn the terminal, you can install from all of them without knowing much about how they specialize in installing programs.

If you’re looking to install something the easiest possible way, in Ubuntu and Debian based systems via a terminal prompt, the best and the easiest way is:

    sudo apt-get install ****

where **** is the name of the package you are trying to install. If you would like it to automatically install without asking you for your approval for more packages, you may add the -y switch to the end. To refresh and update from the repositories you have installed (where the majority of your pre-compiled packages should/would come from), it’s just a simple

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y

which will check the repositories for the newest versions and to automatically update you to the newest packages.

However, I can assure you, there is a time and a place where you will one day have to compile your own program from source files. It’s not pretty, it’s not nice… but it works, and that’s what we’re aiming to do here, to give you a working program. I’m aware that this is going to make a few people antsy, so if you don’t feel up to doing it, you could always ask someone to make you a pre-compiled package, such as a deb file for Debian-based distributions, or an RPM for Red Hat based ones. However, the command line options to do a manual install aren’t that difficult.

    Quite simply, they are:

    ./configure
(which checks to see if you have the dependencies to allow it to work, if not, you’ll have to manually install them)
    make
    (actually compiles the source code)
    sudo make install
(actually installs the now compiled source code)
    clean install
(cleans the temp files used to compile the source code)

while you’re in the folder that has the source files. It’s just a simple CD (change directory) command to jump into the folder that you uncompressed your saved source file to. If you’re using Ubuntu and compiling files from source for the first time, you have to install the build-essentials, which are installed by an even simpler:

    sudo apt-get build-essential

I’m aware this will be complex subject matter, which is why I suggest if you are a Linux user to save this information and to make sure it’s near you at all times. I’ve personally printed off a copy of the commands I have to use to compile, because while I don’t often have to compile from source. Keep in mind this will not work for everything, so when you download a package, make sure to read the ‘README’ or ‘INSTALL’ file, which should walk you though it step by step. Always follow the provided documentation first, if you can’t get it working from using that, then this is a secondary solution that should work for you fine.

The nice thing about Debian and distros based off Debian, is ever since the introduction of Ubuntu and Linux Mint, there are more and more packages being written and compiled for them. This will lessen your chances of running across the need to compile files from source, but it will never fully eliminate the need to know this skill.
