One of our forum member tangomouse has created a nice and simple tool called Re-Enable to help us re-enable disabled Task Manager, Registry Editor, Command Prompt, Folder Options and even System Restore configuration that is normally caused by virus. Honestly the tool that I’ve been using to do this is Remove Restriction Tool v1.03 but now the latest version of RRT has grown so much that I’d say it’s a little too bloated. I just needed a simple tool that does the job and doesn’t have all those flashy interface that sometimes I can’t run on a virus infected computer.

This project started off to help another forum member but somehow it ended up in Softpedia and now in this blog.


As you can see at the screenshot below, it’s a no brainer to use this tool. All you need to do is put a check on the checkbox that you want to enable and click the Enable button. The disable feature will be instantly enabled or if not, a reboot would do the trick. Please make sure that the computer is free from virus or else the changes made by this tool will not be effective and there is no end to enabling/disabling competition between you and the virus.

Re-enable is coded in .NET but doesn’t need .NET installed because .NET dependencies are included in the program making it fully portable. That is why a single file is in 36.7MB. However if you working on a computer that already have .NET framework installed, then you can just use the 64KB version instead.

This product was last tested in the Softpedia Labs on 1st of September 2009 by Cosmin Anton and they guarantee that Re-Enable Portable 1.0.0.0 is 100% Clean, which means it does not contain any form of malware, including but not limited to: spyware, viruses, trojans and backdoors. Re-Enable is only in version 1 and I am sure that it can be improved with a couple more features without making it too bloated.

Recently I stumbled on a security software called Spy-The-Spy. This freeware is quite interesting and useful because it is made to spy on spywares. The developer of this tool figured that instead of building a database of spyware or try to figure out what registry belongs to spyware, he’ll just need simple tool that is able to notify him the very moment something is being installed on his computer.

If you’re wondering how can this tool monitor for spywares, it is actually quite simple. It simply monitors system folders for any new exe’s or dll’s being added, modified or renamed. Windows and System32 folder is usually the main place where spyware makes a copy of itself or drop even more spywares. So by monitoring important folders, you instantly get to know if something is being installed on your computer without your knowledge.


Spy-To-Spy sits in tray and watches folders you specified in settings. The folders include subfolders so you really just need to set C:\Windows to monitor all additions to Windows and System folders.

Now anytime an EXE or DLL is added, renamed or modified in the monitored folder, a warning message will appear telling you which file has been added, renamed or modified.

You have the option to add selected files to Quarantine. It will brute force kill the processes quickly one after another to avoid watchdogs and move the exe file to a Quarantine folder. You can also easily run SFC (System File Checker) from the menu in case if some system DLL files are modified and you have no backup for the file. Make sure you have the Windows disc with you because SFC requires it.

By default, Spy-The-Spy monitors only the Windows folder. I’d advice you to monitor Program Files folder as well because trojan coders already aware that Windows and System32 folders are being carefully monitored by most security software. If you’d like to be extra safe, you can even monitor the whole C: drive. You won’t really be bugged by the notification because it only monitors EXE and DLL files. Other file formats are ignored.

Spy-The-Spy is truly a simple and useful tool. It is small in size and takes up only 5MB from your memory. This tool is not perfect because it doesn’t monitor other dangerous file extension such as .PIF, .SCR, .VBS, .BAT and .CMD. Remember, Spy-The-Spy is only a file monitor. It doesn’t differentiate between real spyware and a legit file that has been added to watched folders.

All this while I’ve been using Megaupload/Share.am Link Grabber to bypass Megaupload’s download limit slot problem. It’s been a few months that this tool has stopped working most probably because Megaupload has updated their code and the author of Megaupload/Share.am Link Grabber didn’t bother to update his useful tool.

Yesterday I desperately needed to download something from Megaupload and I was out of ideas on how to do it because the only tool that I was relying on can no longer be used. Everytime I tried to download something from Megaupload, I get the message All download slots assigned to your country are currently in use. Please try again in a few hours or install the Megaupload Toolbar for immediate access – with the toolbar installed, there are no more slot limitations for you!

For sure I don’t want to download and install the crappy Megaupload toolbar when I don’t even download from Megaupload often. I think it has nothing to do with slots being used up. It’s just Megaupload trying to promote their toolbar and get as many people as they can to install Megaupload toolbar. Luckily mEtRiX suggested a way that can bypass Megaupload download slot limit.


All I needed to do to bypass Megaupload download slot limit problem is download a Firefox plugin called Megaupload SX 4.3 and enable it before I visit the Megaupload download link URL. If you don’t have Firefox browser, I suggest you download and use it one now.

After installing Megaupload SX plugin, restart your Firefox and you’ll notice that a new menu “Megaupload SX 4.3” will appear in your Tools menu. There’s only enable and disable. Turn it on when you want to click a megaupload link and turn it off later the download has started.

It’s THAT SIMPLE! Another reason why Firefox is the best browser in the world.

Note: There’s a small problem with this plugin. Even after uninstalling the Megaupload SX plugin, you’ll still be stuck at some other language when you visit Megaupload. If I am not wrong, it should be Portuguese language. Clearing your Firefox cache and cookies will fix this problem.

To be honest, even though I can speak and understand English, sometimes it’s tough to understand what the actors or actresses are saying in a movie. For cinemas in Malaysia, there are English, Chinese and Malay subtitles being displayed simultaneously. So even if you don’t understand what the characters in the movie just said, looking at the subtitles really helps a lot.

Problem is, downloaded movies and videos don’t contain subtitles. I think one of the reason why movie rippers don’t include subtitles in video files is because you can have your own choice of subtitles language. Let’s say you only understand Arabic and don’t know a single English word but you want to watch the latest Ocean’s Thirteen movie. All you need to do is just download the Arabic subtitle which is usually smaller than 100KB in size to go with the downloaded movie.

Here’s how you find the subtitles you want and include it in the downloaded movie in step-by-step instruction.


A downloaded movie is around 600MB-700MB in size. Let’s try to search for “An Inconvenient Truth” subtitle.

1. Visit Subscene to search for the subtitle.

2. Type in the movie name; For example, An Inconvenient Truth at the search box and click Search button.

3. It will display a list of available subtitles for “An Inconvenient Truth”. As you can see, it has Arabic, Chinese, Brazilian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English and many more languages subtitle.

4. Click on the language that you’d like to download, type the four random characters and click the Download button.

5. Extract the downloaded archive file and you should get a .SRT file.

6. Copy the .SRT file to where your downloaded movie is located and rename it exactly the same as your movie file and retain the .SRT extension.

7. Play the AVI file with your favorite media player such as Winamp or BSplayer and it will automatically include the subtitle.

You might encounter a problem that is the subtitles are out of sync. It’s either too fast, too slow or appear in wrong places. The subtitle you downloaded may be a subtitle for a different ‘frames per second’ version of the movie. Try downloading more subtitles for your movie to see if any of them fit.

Another website that has a lot of subtitles for AVI movies is “DivX Subtitles“. I less prefer this site than Subscene because it requires registration in order to download the subtitles. But if you’ve read and implemented the BugMeNot article, you don’t need to register an account to download the subtitles.

It is very common nowadays for any web browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer 7, Maxthon, Opera and etc to have tabs. Tabbed browsing in web browser lets you load Web pages in separate tabs of a single browser window, so you can jump between them quickly and easily. Perhaps you’re reading a news story and want to follow an interesting link without losing your place in the original story. With tabbed browsing, you can do this without filling your desktop with new, unorganized browser windows.

Not only that, compare running 7 Internet Explorer browser with 1 Internet Explorer with 7 tabs. You’ll notice that your computer will start to crawl slowly on the computer that’s running 7 IE browser.

Now, you can also have tabs in your Windows Explorer! Microsoft should have implemented this feature in Windows Vista!



Quizo, a japanese has created QT TabBar that will add-on tab function to your explorer. It’s not a third party program that replaces your explorer… Installation is very easy. Just download the zip archive, extract to a new folder and run RegisterQTTabBar.exe.

Make sure that the Install button is selected and click on the next button. A few seconds later, you’ll get a message saying “Types registered successfully“. You have to restart or logoff and relogin to start having Tabs in your Explorer.

After relogon, you need to open explorer, and right click on toolbar. Check “QT TabBar“. First time you’ll see an empty tab. Close explorer window, and from next time QT TabBar will work properly.

The default shortcut key to go around the tabs in explorer is similar to Firefox browser. You can however edit the default shortcut keys with QTShortcutKeyEditor.exe

You can even set password to any folders. It’s an extra added feature for QT TabBar. Simply right click on the tab and select “Set Password…“. After you’ve set a password to a folder, when you try to access the folder, you’ll be prompted to enter the correct password.

Important Notes: If you’re using Windows XP, make sure Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 or 3.0 is installed on your computer. You can get Microsoft .NET framework 3.0 from Windows Update or download from here.

All this while I was able to play AVI videos normally with Winamp. Everything was still working fine until I downloaded .SRT subtitle file and played it together with AVI video. The video was playing upside down and the subtitles are being displayed from back to front.

I did some tests to try pinpoint the problem.

1. Use Winamp to play AVI video with subtitle – Video Upside Down
2. Use Winamp to play AVI video without subtitle – OK
3. Use Windows Media Player to play AVI video with subtitle – OK

At first I thought it had to be something wrong with the .SRT subtitle file but step 3 proves it’s not. I can only think of 2 possibility that might be causing the AVI video being played upside down which is Winamp player, or the codec settings that is associated with Winamp. I downloaded the latest official Winamp, installed it but still didn’t fix the problem. After a little searching and testing, I found a solution to fix the AVI video playing upside down problem.


I will try to explain in general on how to fix this video upside down problem because there are so many versions of codecs and also types of codec packs. The solution for playing these files correctly is to enable Xvid decoding in ffdshow. First of all, you need to know what codec is needed to play the AVI video. Here is an article on how to determine video codec required to play AVI video. Just a tip, MOST of the AVI files can be played with XVID codec.

Next you need to look for “ffdshow video decoder” shortcut to configure ffdshow video decoder. I have K-Lite Codec Pack installed on my computer, the ffdshow video decode shortcut is at Start -> Programs -> K-Lite Codec Pack -> Configuration -> ffdshow video decoder.

If you don’t have FFDShow installed, download the latest FFDShow from Free-Codecs website and install it. After installation, go to Start -> Programs -> ffdshow and run Video decoder configuration.

If the AVI video file requires Xvid codec to play, then at the left hand side Codecs page, set Xvid to “libavcodec“. If it’s H.264/AVC, then set “libavcodec” on H.264/AVC.

YAY! No more upside down video when playing AVI file with subtitles!

I hope you do not encounter problems in including subtitles for downloaded divx movies. If you find that searching for subtitles from websites to websites is tedious and troublesome, then here’s an easy way for you to search subtitles in 7 websites simultaneously and lets you download the subtitle file without even opening your web browser!


Subcrawler is a free program, 100% written in Java, that allows you to search for and download subtitles from various web sites.

Currently Subcrawler supports searching and downloading subtitles from 7 websites which is listed below. Out of the 7 websites, 2 websites that is podnapisi.NET and subtitlesbox requires you to register in order to search. Registration is FREE. Actually Divxsubtitles also requires registration in order to download subtitle files but I found out that Subcrawler is using a default already included login which is demo@divxsubtitles.net with the password “demo“. Looks like there’s a hidden default password for that site…

To download subtitles from SubCrawler after searching, right click on the subtitles and select Download. Very simple and straight forward program that does the job.

I like software that has the feature of able to check for program updates. This way we are able to easily keep the program up to date without visiting the website daily, weekly or monthly to check if there’s a new version to download. By default, SubCrawler checks for latest version on startup. You can disable it at Tools -> Settings. If you want to manually check for update, you can go to Help -> Check for latest version.

To run Subcrawler, you need to have Java installed. If you don’t have it, you can download the Subcrawler package that has JAVA included. Good thing about program written in Java is it can support multiple operating system. Subcrawler is available for Linux users as well!

I noticed from last time that all Steganos software installation file is huge. The setup file for Steganos Password Manager 2007 is 14MB. I seldom post any tips or tricks on MegaUpload because I really seldom use this free service. Reason is because there are 2 restrictions. Whenever I want to download anything from MegaUpload, I will get the message saying “All download slots assigned to your country (Malaysia) are currently in use. Please try again in a few hours or install the Megaupload Toolbar for immediate access – with the toolbar installed, there are no more slot limitations for you!” What? I have to download a toolbar in order to download using free account? Forget it! Fortunately, there is a Firefox extension which lets you bypass the requirement to download the unnecessary toolbar.

Second restriction is after I’ve downloaded the a file from Megaupload, I can’t immediately download the next file… I’ll have to reconnect my internet connection to get a new IP address to bypass this restriction. Sometimes I have no choice but to go through all that because the files I am looking for can only be found in megaupload.

I think I am lucky because while reading some post on a forum, I found a website that can generate megaupload premium link! Facebook…. The most visited website in the world today probably even beating Google. If you want to find an old friend, the first place you should attempt to look first is Facebook. I noticed that whenever I see any laptop in public, most of the time they are on Facebook, going through their news feed seeing what’s the latest message posted by their friends, reading comments or viewing photos or albums. One of the main reason why until today I don’t want to sign up for a Facebook account is I am stuck to the slogan “DO YOUR WORK. DON’T BE STUPID“. Not that using Facebook is stupid, but I have a lot of other things to do on the computer.

I have a friend that is so addicted to Facebook until you can see her profile Online or Idle when you bring up the chat window from the bottom of the screen. Her company has started a rule that they cannot open Facebook website from their web browser and she’s dying to get online. The only solution I can think of is to use a desktop chat client for Facebook.

These past few days I’ve been giving tips on how to recover passwords from your browser. Out of all the tips, I think this is the best! It doesn’t require any software to reveal hidden passwords under asterisks and don’t need to waste your time in cracking master password.

Remembered I said it was impossible to view the hidden password under asterisks in Firefox? Well I was wrong. Turns out that there’s a way to do it. No software required, the result is immediate and it is shockingly easy to reveal the hidden password.

Here’s an example. As you can see, I have my GMail username and password saved in my Firefox browser.

If I’ve forgotten the master password, I can easily view the contents of password fields by simply entering a line of javascript below at the address bar and hit enter.

A dialog box will prompt and your password is shown!

This method works on Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape and Opera. When I get to know about this method, I felt that even Firefox master password is rather useless. Turning off javascript will protect you from this hack but then you might face problems viewing websites that uses javascript.

Simple rule to protect your password. Do NOT save your password if you’re using a shared computer. If you’re using a public computer, make sure you clear the cache and private data just in case you accidentally saved your password.
