  • How Much Memory Does a WebPage in a Tab Take Up in Web Browser?

    Firefox web browser is a memory hungry monster, no doubt about that. If you don’t tweak some of the hidden settings, Firefox will surely take up more than 100MB RAM when the cache builds up. Although Firefox is a very advanced web browser with lots of add-ons, it is lacking of an add-on or built-in feature for us to view the memory usage in a multi process browser. I’ve always been curious to know exactly how much memory does it take when I open a tab and load a web page? The only way I can know is through Windows Task Manager by comparing before and after opening a website.

    I’ve been testing the new Google Chrome web browser for the past few days and I found a very interesting and useful feature that is “built-in” to the browser. It actually has a “Task Manager” on its own to compare the memory usage between active browsers such as IE, Firefox and Opera. Not only that, the best part is it can tell you how much memory has been taken on a particular process and tab! Let’s say I open raymond.cc and cnn.com website, the memory statistics page can tell me how much memory raymond.cc has taken and also how much memory cnn.com has taken.


    As far as I know, there are two ways to access Google Chrome’s built-in Task Manager. The first way is to right click on an open Google Chrome on taskbar, and select Task Manager.

    The second way is to simultaneously press Shift+Esc keys while Google Chrome is open. As you can see very clearly that raymond.cc main blog page only take up 6.8MB memory.

    If you think that the information given is not enough, and would like to see more a more detailed memory usage, you can click the “Stats for nerds” link located at the bottom of Google Chrome’s Task Manager. A new page will open showing you the a more detailed memory and virtual memory usages. You can actually access the page by typing about:memory at the URL bar and hit enter. Below are the explanation of what you see in the memory statistics page.

    Memory
    Private: Resident memory size that is not shared with any other process. This is the best indicator of browser memory resource usage.
    Share: Resident memory size that is currently shared with 2 or more processes. Note: For browsers using multiple processes, if we simply added the shared memory of each individual process, this valud would be inflated. Therefore, this value is computed as an approximate value for shared memory in each of the browser’s processes. Note also that shared memory varies depending on what other processes are running on the system, and may be difficult to measure reproducibly.
    Total: The sum of the private + shared resident memory sizes.

    Virtual Memory
    Private: The resident and paged bytes commited for use by only this process.
    Mapped: Total bytes allocated by this process that are mapped into the view of a section, backed by either system pagefile or file system. This primarily memory-mapped files.

    While playing around with Google Chrome’s Task Manager, I found that the browser able to handle the memory usage extremely well. Try switching between all opened tabs a few times and you’ll see a drop on the memory usage for each process. The maximum drop of memory usage I’ve seen for my site is from 10756KB to 1764KB. Now I am wondering when will Firefox improve its memory usage handling like Firefox and also come up with a process/tab task manager?

  • Disable Annoying Firefox 3 Automatic Scanning for Viruses When Finish Downloading

    Electronic Arts gave away free Command & Conquer Red Alert 1 yesterday and I immediately downloaded both Soviet and Allied CD at the size of 500MB each file. The Soviet CD downloaded fine in Firefox 3 but then when the Allied CD completed downloading, the download window just kept on showing that it is “Scanning for Viruses…”

    I am aware of this new feature in Firefox 3 but it usually takes only a few seconds to scan for virus but this time it never stops! The file is 500MB in size and I am afraid that closing the Window will cause the file to be deleted and I had to download it again. Luckily manually closing the “Scanning for Viruses” window doesn’t corrupt the downloaded file. This feature doesn’t make much sense because if you have an antivirus installed, there should be a real-time protection automatically scanning the file once it gets into your computer and if you don’t have an antivirus, you don’t even need this feature at all!


    Firefox knowledge base did say that in Firefox 3, if a Windows user has an antivirus program installed, it is launched to scan files when they finish downloading. Firefox 3 automatic scanning can be disabled by following the few simple steps below.

    Open Firefox 3, type about:config at the URL bar and hit enter. You should see a screen warning you that “This might void your warranty! Changing these advanced settings can be harmful to the stability, security, and performance of this application. You should only continue if you are sure of what you are doing.” Click the “I’ll be careful, I promise” button.

    Next, type browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone at the filter. You should see the preference name browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone with the status as default, type boolean and value as true. Simple double click on the value and it’ll change to false.

    The effect is immediate without the need to restart the Firefox 3 browser. The next time you finished downloading a file in Firefox 3, it will no longer auto scan for viruses.

    Just wondering, since Firefox 3 is able to automatically scan files with the installed antivirus, why isn’t it capable of detecting if the computer has an antivirus installed or not? If yes, antivirus will scan the downloaded file and if no, the auto scanning for viruses will be deactivated. Another thing that I’d suggest is they could add a configuration for this in options.

    Once your webcam is in use, you can’t use your webcam on other application such as MSN or Yahoo chat. You’ll have to quit the application that is using your webcam first, then only you can use your webcam on other application. For example, your webcam is your home’s CCTV and you want to start a video chat with your friend on Windows Live Messenger. You have to shut down the CCTV software first then only you can start the video chat or else you will get an error message that says “You have invited USER to start viewing webcam. Please wait for a response or Cancel (Alt+Q) the pending invitation. Your conversation cannot begin because your camera is currently in use or not plugged in. Make sure your camera is available and try again. You have canceled your invitation to start viewing webcam.”

    To solve this problem, I’ve written an article two years ago on how to use webcam or video capture source on several application simultaneously using SplitCam. Basically SplitCam installs a webcam driver which supports multiple application usage. Today I found an even better software which allows you to use your webcam with multiple applications at the same time and add cool graphics to your webcam video window.


    ManyCam is able to split one video stream into several video streams. All you need to do is to choose ManyCam virtual Webcam as the video source in your webcam applications. You can also add some features to the video stream by using ManyCam (for example, funny animations, time and text). Right click the ManyCam icon in your bottom right tray to access these features.

An example on how to configure Windows Live Messenger is go to Tools > Audio and video setup..” At step three where you setup your webcam, click the drop down box and select ManyCam Virtual Webcam instead of the default webcam driver. You can refer to this help page for more configuration on other application.

    Other than that, ManyCam is able to effects to your webcam. There are already a few built-in effects for you to play around with and if you find too little, you can go to the ManyCam’s effects page to download more than 3000 effects for free! One thing you should be careful during the installation is it will prompt you to install ALOT ManyCam Toolbar and uPlayMe Desktop Application. Both of these application will install by default and you’ll need to UNCHECK to avoid installing the toolbar and uPlayMe.

    Advanced computer users usually have more than one operating systems on their computer. Like me, I have Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OSX and Ubuntu in my hard drive. Actually most of the time I am on Windows XP and the rest of the operating systems are only for testing purposes.

    One of the big problem that a lot of people will face is how to multi-boot between so many different operating systems. Let’s say if you installed Linux first, then only Windows. I am sure Windows boot manager will overwrite Linux boot manager and it wouldn’t automatically detect Linux OS and add it in the list. There are a few popular shareware boot manager such as OSL2000 which cost $24.90 per license or Acronis OS Selector which is bundled together in Acronis Disk Director Suite which cost $49.99.

    How about just use GAG, a free graphical Boot Manager to multiboot between 9 different operating systems?


    GAG (initials, in spanish, of Graphical Boot Manager) is a Boot Manager program. It’s loaded when the computer is turned on and allows you to choose the operating system you want to use.

    GAG’s main features are:

  • Allows boot of up to 9 different operating systems.
  • It can boot operating systems installed in primary and extended partitions on any available hard disk.
  • Can be installed from nearly all operating systems.
  • GAG doesn’t need its own partition. It installs itself in the first track of the hard disk, which is reserved for these kinds of programs. It can also be installed on a floppy disk, without using the hard disk.
  • It has a timer to boot a default operating system (selectable by the user).

    • To install GAG, just burn the ISO image file (cdrom.iso) to a CD and boot it up on your computer. At the first screen, press number 4 on your keyboard to install GAG. Next, select your keyboard type. If you have a QWERTY keyboard, press 1. Finally, select your preferred language, 8 for English. Now the GAG Graphical Boot Manager screen will appear. Press S to setup GAG. You can add new operating systems, set boot timer, setup password, hide partitions and etc. You’ll have to press H to save GAG in hard disk.

    There are other boot manager such as OSL2000 which is able to boot up to 100 operating systems but let’s face it, how many people in this world actually installs more than 9 different operating systems in 1 computer? The most OS I had was Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OSX, and 2 Linux distros. GAG is free and good enough for any normal computers to multiboot between different OSes.

Open the email from iolo technologies, LLC (orders@iolo.com) with the subject “Thank you for ordering from iolo technologies, #XXXXXXXXXXXXXX“‏. Note down the Activation Key.

    7. Download iolo System Mechanic 8 and install.

  • Disable AVG Search-Shield From Blocking Active Threats WebSite

    LinkScanner safe surfing technology is developed by Exploit Prevention Labs and has been bought over by AVG Technologies. The patent pending LinkScanner technology is a new security component included in the AVG 8.0 Free Edition, which provides the Search-Shield functionality. Its purpose is to scan all results of the supported Internet search engines (Yahoo!, Google, MSN), and provides you with an evaluation of a safety level of each found website. At the same time, the LinkScanner also checks all Internet addresses typed into the address bar of your browser, or linked on other websites. There are four different levels of information you can get for each website, from Safe to Dangerous, allowing you to completely avoid dangerous or malicious websites.

    It looks useful in guarding you against bad websites but it can be really annoying. For example, there’s a warez forum that I am trying to access and I know for sure that the website is safe. When I enter the URL in the browser, I get a warning page that says “Danger: AVG Search-Shield has detected active threats on this page and has blocked access for your protection. The page you are trying to access has been indeitified as a known exploit, phishing, or social engineering web site and therefore has been blocked for your safety. Without protection, such as that in the AVG security toolbar and AVG, your computer is at risk of being compromised, corrupted or having your identity stolen. Please follow one of the suggestioons below to continue.”

    Disable AVG LinkScanner Search Shield

    I continue to the page by ignoring the notice and was able to get to the login page. When I entered my username, password and hit the Login button, the annoying AVG Search Shield notice appears again. It goes in constant looping and I can never get to login to the forum! Here is how to disable AVG FREE LinkScanner Search-Shield from blocking the sites that you want to access.


    If you have installed AVG Toolbar, you can control this component directly from your Internet browser using the button Search-Shield. Disabling this button will stop scanning of the search results in Google, MSN and Yahoo!, and also the scanning of Internet addresses (URL’s) you enter into the web browser (either manually, or by clicking on a link on any website, in an e-mail, etc.).

    Disable Internet Explorer Search Shield

    If you do not have AVG Toolbar installer, here are a couple of ways you can turn off AVG LinkScanner Search Shield.
    Solution 1: Click Components from the menu bar and select LinkScanner. Uncheck Enable AVG Search-Shield (need web browser restart)
    Solution 2: Double click LinkScanner at Overview tab. Uncheck Enable AVG Search-Shield (need web browser restart)
    Solution 3: Click Tools from the menu bar and select Advanced settings… Select LinkScanner and Uncheck Enable AVG Search-Shield (need web browser restart)

    You will notice that the AVG system tray icon will have a small red colored exclamation mark. You do not need to be afraid because it is to notify you that LinkScanner has been disabled.

    If in future you want to install AVG FREE 8 without LinkScanner, you can run the setup with the following command line arguments. The only thing you need to change in the command line is the AVG executable (.exe) filename.

    The AVG LinkScanner Search-Shield configuration is limited with no exclusion setting. Other than AVG LinkScanner Search-Shield annoying the hell out of you when visiting a potentially dangerous website, some people also reported that search results are much slower than usual. That is because it scans all search results and provides you with an evaluation of a safety level of each found website. If you have limited bandwidth, I advice you to disable AVG Search Shield.

    I am always on the look out for useful tool or software that can make my computer tech life much easier. Sometimes I am not very good at words and it’s tough for me to explain to a basic computer user on how does a particular technology/software works. One very good method to teach a person how to burn a CD or use any software is by screen recording. Early last year I’ve introduced CamStudio, a free and easy to use screen recording software. It is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs).

    However, it can be another problem when the user is unable to play the AVI file because of a missing codec or SWF file because of missing Adobe Flash Player. The best way is to record onscreen changes to a self-played EXE file because all Windows computer should be able to run executable file. Here’s a free screen recording software that can save it to EXE.


    SCREEN2EXE is an easy-to-use tool to capture desktop activity and save it as a self-playing .exe file. The program will capture mouse movements, clicks and even optional audio comments from your microphone. You can choose to record the entire screen or just a selected area, configure the recording quality and also the frame rate. The captured video is highly compressed and saved as standalone .EXE viewer that can be sent by email or made available for download.

    Record Screen to Executable

    Screen2EXE is very easy to use as it only requires 4 step. The first step is to select the region that you want to record, or full screen. At step two, you get to select the quality of the output. If you select Very good, almost lossless, the file will be slightly bigger than Efficient grayscale. You can try them out to see which one suits you the best. You also get to select the frame rate and mic recording. The third step allows you to start recording. It also shows that you can press the F10 key to stop recording or F9 to pause/resume recording. You get to preview the recorded screen at the final step. If you’re satisfied with your screen recording, you can go ahead and save it to an executable file.

    Why not AVI? Well, an AVI file need right codec to play, to achieve compatibility, most AVI outputting screen recorders must use codec which system installed in default. But, those system codec are designed for general videos not for screens. When use it to compress screen video, the output file is very huge! For example, a 1024×768, 1 minute screen video could take up to 10MB. Compare to SSCV2 which is used in SCREEN2EXE, it outputs only 2MB.The same thing happens to SWF and other general formats. Now you do the math, AVI or EXE?

    Here’s the test I did. I recorded full screen for a minute on all video quality.
    – SCREEN2EXE
    Very good, almost lossless quality: 462KB
    Good: 362KB
    Efficient grayscale, smallest file: 294KB

    – CamStudio with 70% video quality and Microsoft Video 1 compressor (codec).
    AVI: 25.6MB
    SWF: 1.64MB (The conversion from AVI to SWF takes a while)

    Convinced why not AVI? Well if you still prefer AVI or SWF, use CamStudio. If EXE, download Screen2EXE at the link below.

    There are a lot of system diagnostics and benchmarking solution software such as SIW (Software Information for Windows), PC Wizard 2008, AIDA32, ASTRA, Belarc Advisor and many more.     Everything is just great about Fresh Diagnose until I tried running the benchmark which the Start button is grayed out. Later I found out that I’ll need to register by giving out an email address to receive the free license key code. The registration is a minor issue which I can always use a temporary email address in order not to receive any future emails from FreshDevices. The registration system doesn’t accept Hotmail but Gmail works fine.

    Fresh Diagnose doesn’t seems to be portable because it installs a driver file freshio.sys and loads during Windows startup. I tried copying FreshDiagnose folder to another computer and I could run without problems. Although it seems fine running without installation, maybe some features will be unavailable or some readings will be inaccurate. So it’s better to install Fresh Diagnose than running it from a USB flash drive.

    I’d never use a computer from library, cybercafe, friend’s or relative’s house to check my emails or log in to any website that have to key in my password. I will never know if the computer that I am using has spyware or keylogger installed that can capture my password as it is often impossible to tell. I still remember that many years ago I have a friend who used to work in a cybercafe and he told me that he installed keyloggers on all computers which helped him captured so many passwords! It is very unethical and I believe there are people still doing that.

    There are software and hardware based keyloggers and then there is screenshot capture. It is possible to fool all those spy activity but it’s very troublesome. Today I found a way that can safely and EASILY login from internet cafes despite keyloggers and spyware.


    KYPS is a free reverse proxy server created by Andreas Pashalidis that enables us to log into our accounts from a public/shared computer, without disclosing our password to that computer. KYPS is very easy to use and does not require you to run any software on the public/shared computer. All we have to do is to obtain a list of one-time codes from the KYPS server, print these codes, and keep the printout safely in our wallet (alternatively we could save our codes on our mobile phone or PDA). We can then log into our account using our one-time codes instead of our password.

    KYPS protection from keylogger

    This solution sounds perfect but my greatest concern was do I have to save my password in KYPS so it’ll login for me? No, my password won’t be saved or recorded by KYPS but it is required exclusively for generating a PDF file with our codes. KYPS then deletes our password and our one-time codes as soon as our codes have been returned to us. Each one-time code on the list is nothing more than an encrypted version of our password, which can only be decrypted by the KYPS server. The security of this encryption is based on the one-time pad technique.

    Here are the steps to get started:
    1. Register with KYPS and it will generate a registerReply.pdf file with your one-time codes.
    2. Go to KYPS login page, select the website and enter the username.
    3. Enter the one time code by referring to the number on the one time code list.

    Other than protecting our password, KYPS also acts as a reverse proxy. Let’s say if we login to Hotmail using KYPS. You’ll notice that the URL will not even show hotmail.com address, instead it shows KYPS url with scrambled random characters.

    KYPS service is truly a gem and I find it hard to believe that it is free to use (donations are welcomed). Currently KYPS only supports logging in to Microsoft Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, Google Mail, Web.de, GMX and MySpace. Let’s hope that this free service will continue to go on and support more websites in future.

    If your ISP provides dynamic IP address service, very likely you’re already using Cryptload or (E)lephant to automate downloading from RapidShare. The only way to keep on downloading from RapidShare without getting the message “You have reached the download-limit for free-users. Want to download more? Get your own Premium-account now! Instant download-access! (Or wait XX minutes)” is if you have Premium account or keep changing IP address every time you finish a download.

    If you can’t get Cryptload or (E)lephant to work, here’s another alternative which is able to give you the perfect way to unlimited automatic Rapidshare downloading. If you have Rapidshare Premium account, you can use it as a very good download manager. If don’t have one, you can use it to automate downloading as free user.


    The program is called RS Downloader developed by Schneewiesel. It is only Rapidshare download manager which has the capability of auto recognizing CAPTCHA code and also ability to run third party tools based on error message detected in Rapidshare. It’s not a hacking tool to exploit Rapidshare servers. Actually I knew about this program long ago but didn’t want to use it because the program’s interface is in German.

    Bypass rapidshare download limit

    If you don’t know German, you’re not going to be able to use the program but lucky you, I’ve taken the time to translate every single text to English so we can all use it. It’s not easy because the official website contains no documentation at all about the program and the support forum is totally in German. Many hours are spent translating the text in the program from German to English, trying to learn how to use it without any documentation, and then write a guide about it here.

    So let’s get started. If you have a Rapidshare Premium account, you can skip all the steps below. Just download RSDownloader from the link at the end of this article, run rsd.exe, go to Einstellungen tab, and then Premium Account tab. Enter your Rapidshare premium login number and password.

    For those downloading rapidshare links as free user, please continue reading.

    1. Before we use RS Downloader to download as free user, we’ll first need to create an automatic way to disconnect and then re-connect the Internet to get a new IP address from your ISP.

    1a. If you are using an ADSL modem and require to connect to the Internet.
    Open notepad and type in the code shown below and save it as rasdial.bat

    %systemroot%\system32\rasdial "streamyx" "user" "pass"

    There is 3 lines. First line will disconnect your current connection. You need to change the “streamyx” to your connection name. To know what is the connection name, see the title of the dial up.

    The second line will ping localhost 20 times which is good to let your modem rest for 20 seconds before reconnecting again.

    The third line will auto dial up to your ISP. Again, change the “streamyx” to your connection name, then “user” to your username and “pass” to your password.

    Once you have the rasdial.bat file ready, try running the batch file and see if it will automatically disconnect your internet, wait for 20 seconds and then reconnect. If it works, continue to step 2. If not, check your connection name, username and password.

    1b. For people that is using ROUTER to connect to ADSL.
    You have to use Macro to record your actions in logging in to your router, disconnect and reconnect. I recommend using free macro Do It Again. Download and install Do It Again. Run Do It Again, go to Options and select Associate with .dia files. Now click the Create a New Task button. You will need to manually login to your router using a web browser to manually disconnect and reconnect your connection. Press SCROLL LOCK when you’re done and save the task with a name such as “changeip”. To test whether it works or not, go to the programs folder which is at C:\Program Files\Do It Again\ and run changeip.dia file. It should automatically open up your web browser, log in to your router, disconnect and reconnect your connection.

    2. Once you have got the method to auto disconnect and reconnect right, download RS Downloader from the link at the end of this article, extract and run RSD.exe

    3. Go to Einstellungen tab, and then Methoden tab.

    4. CHECK “Reconnect nach jedem Download“.

    5. Click the “Durchsuchen” button and browse the rasdial.bat (if you’re using modem to dial up). If you’re using router, browse to C:\Program Files\Do It Again\DoItAgain.exe and at the parameter box, enter changeip.dia (the name that you saved earlier).

    6. Click Speichern button at the bottom right to save the settings.

    7. Now go to any sites that has RapidShare links. Use your mouse to highlight the links, right click and select Copy.

    8. Open RSD, and hit CTRL+V key simultaneously to paste the rapidshare links. You will see that the rapidshare links are being added to Laufende Downloads tab.

    Note: You can set RSD to monitor your clipboard so you don’t need to manually paste the links to RSD. Go to Einstellungen tab, Allgemein tab, CHECK “Zwischenablage überwachen” and click Speichern button. RSD is smart enough to only add rapidshare links to the program.

    9. Hit Start button to start downloading!

    If you have dynamic IP address, then downloading from rapidshare is no problem for you since you can use Cryptload or (E)lephant to automate changing IP address and downloading from RapidShare. For those with static IP address, unfortunately you’ll have to go through the agony of searching for working proxies to use with The Grabber. Previously Team CodeMasters has a website called RapidGrab which enables you to download from RapidShare without limits but the website no longer works. Then I found MegaDL which is similar to RapidGrab but also no longer works.

    Today I found another website, RapidPremium, that does the same as RapidGrab and MegaDL. It uses its own RapidShare Premium accounts to download from rapidshare servers, then you can download from RapidPremium. Check it out!


    RapidPremium is a web based rapidshare downloader that acts as a middle man to give us unlimited rapidshare downloading. What this site does is it downloads the requested file from RapidShare using its RapidShare Premium account (I heard they have 10). You can then download from RapidPremium server.

    FREE RApidshare Premium Account

    Very easy to use. Simply copy and paste the RapidShare link to the box and click Download. You’ll have to wait for RapidPremium to finish downloading from RapidShare first. You do not need to wait long because it takes only a few minutes to download a 100MB file! RapidPremium is able to download from RapidShare at the speed of 700KB/s!!!

    Too bad that RapidPremium website speed is not really fast. When started downloading, I get 20KBps, then it dropped to less than 10KBps. Since it’s so slow, I use my favorite download manager FlashGet to download using 5 threads. The download speed has increased to 40KBps. I believe that the website will be inaccessible if everyone downloads from RapidPremium using download manager with 5 or more threads… So please do not abuse this free and great service. If you have dynamic IP address, please continue using Cryptload or (E)lephant so RapidPremium won’t get hammered by everyone.

    Weirdly, RapidPremium website is not bombared with advertisements. I don’t know how these guys manage to pay for their rapidshare premium account for us to use and also their hosting fees! Thanks ali for sharing this site with me!
