WP-DB Backup 1.7 directory traversal exploit

The famous WP-DB Backup plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to directory traversal attack. marc & shb from ssteam discovered this vulnerability about a week ago and the author of WP-DB Backup was not informed about it.

Proof of Concept:
You must have administrator rights in the wordpress blog to exploit this vulnerability.

The author of WP-DB Backup currently doesn’t have a fix for this exploit. Disabling the plugin will not fix the problem. You can either rename or delete the plugin for temporary fix. If your wordpress blog site has a few admins, then you definately need to fix this problem.

Good news is, Ryan Boren has a fix for the directory traversal vulnerability.

PeerSpider – easily search multiple bittorrent p2p sites

This makes it easier for the author to update the engines when any BitTorrent tracker sites changed their search interface.

How to Bypass Most Firewall and Proxy Restrictions

Would you like to run BitTorrent and download files from your work place or college? Bad news is most of big companies and schools has firewall or proxy where the administrator can restrict you from doing everything on the internet except checking your email and maybe browsing the internet. You can’t chat, you can’t listen to online music, you can’t download your favourite TV series you missed last night on torrent or P2P, playing online games…. NOTHING!

Here is a freeware that can help you do all that even if you have firewall or proxy restrictions. Be careful if you’re chatting or playing games during work because you might loose your job for doing that. That’s why it’s being blocked in the first place. This guide is only for your knowledge and use it at your own risk. I won’t hold responsible for anything that may happen to you. HTTP-Tunnel acts as a socks server, allowing you to use your Internet applications safely despite restrictive firewalls and/or you not be monitored at work, school, government and gives you a extra layer of protection against hackers, spyware, ID theft’s with HTTP-Tunnel’s encryption.
Bypass Firewall Proxy with HTTP-Tunnel

Your Internet application sends data to the HTTP-Tunnel Client, which in turn tunnels the data over HTTP (port 80) to the HTTP-Tunnel servers. The servers then send the data to the intended destination and forward the responses back to the HTTP-Tunnel client. This forwarding technique effectively bypasses firewalls, (and/or for users whom want a secure, monitor free usage), permitting the user to successfully use their favorite application.

HTTP-Tunnel runs on a variety of Windows operating systems (Windows 98, ME, NT 4.X, 2000 and XP). Unfortunately, there are currently no releases available for Unix or Macintosh platforms. The best part is the filesize for this freeware is only 174KB in size!

There are 2 versions of HTTP-Tunnel. The free version and paid version. The difference between the two version is you will be getting high speed option for power users, no bandwidth limitation. Two two options are ideal for users behind a high speed internet connection (Cable/DSL modem, T1, etc.) and good for applications which are transfer-intensive (peer-to-peer programs, FTP, etc.) If you’re using it for chatting, or you don’t mind the slow download speed in BitTorrent, then the free version of HTTP-Tunnel would be more suitable for you.

HTTP-Tunnel won’t work right out of the box. Meaning there will be some configurations needed in order to work.

QIP is a free unique closed source computer program for immediate cross-Internet communication. The basic functionality of QIP enables its users to see who else is online and available and then easily contact them with text messages in real time sent through a public server. This program is ad-free and it’s lightweight. It has been around for quite a while and they have been updating it all the while. I can confirm with you that this program connects to ICQ server and acts like a alternative client for ICQ but I am not sure why I couldn’t find any of that information on the QIP website.

Most of the internet service providers(ISP) nowadays are offering broadband DSL connection instead of the slow 56k dial-up which possibly enable us to watch or listen to radio online. Hide MP3 audio inside GIF picture

I just found an article by Tom Scott on hiding music in your pictures. How cool is that? It’s really cool! You can send special messages in recorded audio that no one would even guess to your friend in picture format.
It’s like combining 2 files to become 1 and when you run the combined file, it will by default display the picture. To listen to the audio that is embedded into the picture file, you’ll need to manually load the combined file into Winamp.
Here’s the test I did.

1. Combine audio (.mp3) with picture (.gif)
I use the command “copy picture.gif /b + audio.mp3 /b combined.gif” in DOS prompt.

I look in my C:\ drive and now I have a new file “combined.gif”
I run the combined.gif file and it display the same picture as picture.gif.
I run Winamp and manually load the combined.gif, I am able to play the audio.mp3 sound. I tried to load combined.gif file into Windows Media Player and I can only see the picture.gif. No sound at all. Looks like Winamp can support this feature but not Windows Media Player.

2. Combine audio (.wav) with picture (.gif)
I use the same picture.gif but now I am combining the picture file with a .wav sound file. Wav is another type of sound format.
Used the same command “copy picture.gif /b + audio.wav /b combined.gif” in DOS prompt. I ran combined.gif and it is able to display the picture.gif picture file. Tried to load it into Winamp, doesn’t play this time. Loaded the combined.gif into Windows Media Player, it also only display the picture but no sound.
Looks like only .mp3 sound format is supported.

3. Combine audio (.mp3) with picture (.jpg)
Since only mp3 works, we’ll try combining mp3 with another type of picture format with is JPG.
Used the same command “copy picture.jpg /b + audio.mp3 /b combined.jpg” in DOS prompt. Ran the combined.jpg and it displayed the picture.jpg. Then I tried loading the combined.jpg into Winamp, and it played the music. Again, loaded combined.jpg into Windows Media Player, I can only see the picture but no music.

From the test above, I believe that hiding audio inside picture can only work when you embed MP3 audio into picture file. I also believe that other picture format such as TIFF, PNG or Bitmap will work.
Tom Scott explains that the GIF format allows for an “application extension block” – an arbitrary section for applications that isn’t checked by the GIF parser. Meanwhile, Winamp and other MP3 players ignore all data in the file that isn’t marked as an MP3 block. The result: the picture viewer ignores the music, and the MP3 player ignores the picture.
Eventhough he only mentioned GIF, but I tested on JPG and it works as well.

If you’re on a Linux box, you can do it by using the command “cat picture.gif sound.mp3 > combined.gif”

Don’t know anything about Dos prompt and the copy /b command? Here’s an easier way to do it but with limitation. Thomas Scott has created an online tool where you can easily upload your picture and audio into his website and it will automatically combine it for you. The limitation of using his free picture with audio combine service is the GIF file size is limited to 40KB and MP3 80KB in size.

Honestly, I don’t play much computer games but I do once in a while when I get really bored and can’t think of anything to do on the computer. I went to Reflexive Arcade to look for some small sized games but nice to play with. If you visit Reflexive Arcade’s website, you’ll find hundreds of games in there but only around 9 games are developed by them. Reflexive Arcade is like a reseller for small sized downloadable computer games. Hence, the payment goes to Reflexive Arcade if you buy them and also the software registration protection method is also provided by them.

Tradewinds Legends Cheat Code Looked around and found that Tradewinds Legends screenshot is pretty nice. I get to buy ships, upgrade canons and use magic spells. Plus the reviews for this game is awesome. This game gets almost full scores from every reviewer! Moreover, to download this game only takes a few minutes with a broadband connection since the size is 13.92MB. The description for Tradewinds Legends is “Trade and battle with legendary heroes in the mythical Far East as you discover a world of magic on the high seas in this strategy adventure!”

I played Tradewinds Legends for a while and I am kinda addicted to it until I finish the game. However, it’s not really that easy to play with. You have to really manage your money or it’s called Dinar in the game properly. Otherwise, you won’t be able to repair your ships, buy new canons, buy magics, or even repair your ships in order to battle with the future pirates! Some of the items even costs a bomb such as a magical ring cost 1 million dinar! How in the world am I supposed to get that amount of money if I get around tens of thousands Dinars when I complete each task? After each battle with pirates, I need Dinar to repair my ships and buy new canons to replace the spoilt canons.

Before I stop playing the game and uninstall it, I thought that I should look for cheat codes, trainers or hacks on how I can increase my dinar in Tradewinds Legends. Searched around in Google, I can’t fine ZERO cheat codes or hacks for this game! I find it hard to believe because usually a game creator would build-in a cheat code in the game. Since there are no cheats for Tradewinds Legends, I thought that I should find a way to cheat the game myself. Whenever I load the saved games, it would load everything including how much Dinar I have. I looked in the saved games file which is savegame0.sav located in “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sandlot Games\Tradewinds3″ with a hexeditor and couldn’t find anything related to Dinar. Thought for a few minutes and remembered to look for references in memory. So I used a freeware called Memory Gutter XP to locate the Dinar and I found it! I changed the values and indeed the Dinar also changes according to what I changed in the memory “AFTER” I purchase something in the game.
This is how I did it… and I believe it should work for old version Tradewinds 2 as well.

1. Download Tradewinds Legends from Reflexive Aracade and install.

2. Download Memory Gutter XP and install.

3. Play Tradewinds Legends and save 1 Dinar in the Bank.

4. Press Esc button to play Tradewinds Legends in windowed mode. Now run Memory Gutter XP.

5. Click on “Open Task” button and select Tradewinds Legends process and click OK.

6. Click on “Search” button from Memory Gutter XP, type “4999” in Value 1 and click OK.

7. You should see some memory address starting to appear in Memory Gutter XP. Double click all the found memory addresses and it will be added to the box below.

8. Right click on the below box memory addresses and select “Poke“.

9. Enter the value “999999999“. That’s the maximum number you can enter as it can only support 9 characters the most. Trust me, that amount of money will last you throughout the game.

Uninstalling Any Nero Software

If you have any Nero software installed on your computer, try checking your Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel and you should find an entry there which enables you to uninstall/remove it from your computer.

According to Nero, eventhough you should be able to remove any Nero software from your computer from Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel, it is not advisable to do that because it won’t remove all Nero entries.

Well do not worry because Nero has provided a special tool to clean any Nero software in your computer.
Nero has provided a few CleanTool listed below.
1. General CleanTool
2. Registry Checker and Driver CleanTool
3. InCD CleanTool
4. Nero 5 CleanTool
5. Nero 6 CleanTool
6. Nero 7 Clean Tool
7. NeroVision Express CleanTool

I would recommend using General CleanTool because it can clean ANY Nero software installed on your computer. You can also use the specific cleaner for the Nero software installed on your computer.
General CleanTool automatically searches for any Nero software installed on your computer and display it in a dialog for you to choose which Nero software you’d like to remove. If you want to remove all Nero software, just click on the “Clean All” checkbox. Otherwise you can just select which Nero software you’d like to remove.

Please note:
First make sure you have your Nero 7 serial number to install Nero/Nero Express with. The serial number should look like this:

After you finish uninstalling the desired software, restart your computer so that all registry entries will be removed.
â€¢ InCD 5 can be removed completely.

Uninstalling a program also removes all related plug-ins. Please make sure you have saved these files so you can re-install them afterwards.
â€¢ The General CleanTool recognizes if a program is still running and requests a shut down and it can remove files after a reboot in case they are still in use.
â€¢ You are able to execute the CleanTool even when you have to start your computer in “Safe Mode”.

I’ve tried installing and running Apple Remote Desktop 2 on Intel-based Macs but it wasn’t able to run. As for Apple Remote Desktop 3, it worked fine on Intel-based Macs 🙂

Only after a few days Apple announcing their latest Apple Remote Desktop v3, it is already available in Torrent tracker sites.
ThePirateBay torrent tracker site has the most seeders for this application. The pirates even included 2 serial numbers which will expire on end of 2006, and someone even posted a serial number without any time restrictions on the comments box.

Remote Desktop 3 is available in two flavors: a $299 version for managing up to 10 Macs, and a $499 version for managing an unlimited number. The software requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later. Eventhough there are pirate versions of Apple Remote Desktop 3, PLEASE, do support Apple by purchasing this software because it’s such a great application.

I’ve installed many softwares on Macintosh and the software security protection is really bad. You only need to get the installer together with the serial number and you’re set to install and use the Macintosh softwares illegally. Unlike Windows softwares, there are a few softwares I know that are so tough to reverse engineer that even some really senior crackers gave up in cracking it. Not because they can’t(nothing is impossible), but because it’s not worth it.

Nasty Spam on WordPress Comment box

I’ve been getting more than 50 spams per day on my comment box even I have Bad Behavior v1.2.4 installed.
This is irritating since I need to waste my time deleting those spam comments.
I went to Bad Behavior‘s website to see if there’s a new version to block these spammers but the version is still 1.2.4.
I currently have no choice but to install another anti spam plugin Spam Karma v2.1 r2 to run simultaneously with Bad Behavior v1.2.4. Some people reported that they don’t get a single spam after installing and running both anti spam plugin.
According to Spam Karma news, it seems that there is a new breed of spam which uses new technique to bypass anti spam plugin to spam on wordpress comment box.
Will see how it goes and now I am

Data Mirroring Software

I must again state how important it is to always backup your data frequently.
For example, I have three 250GB hard drives and everything is saved from the time I started to use the computer which was 10 years ago. If I loose the data which I found 10 years ago, I might not eve find it on the internet today.
There are many ways to backup your data and today I’m going to talk about mirroring your data using data mirroring software.
Data Mirroring means you have the exact same copy as the source on other location.
Eg, C:\data.doc is the original file. You then have another copy of data.doc on other drives.

It’s a pain to everyday backing up your data by copying to another location.
To simplify this backup, you can use a third-party data mirroring software to help you mirror your data.

MirrorFolder is a real-time mirroring and synchronization software to backup files on local/network/removable drive/disk from local hard disk. You can mirror your important folders, or even an entire drive, on another local/network/removable drive/disk either in real-time or in auto-synchronization mode. It works on Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP.
Once a mirror is setup, mirroring is done silently in the background without requiring any further effort or attention from you. Options are available to exclude file types and subfolders from mirroring. You may also optionally archive mirror files inside a zip file periodically. This data mirroring software is fully integrated with Windows and requires very little system resources, e.g., memory, processor time, etc., for running itself.

Some common uses of MirrorFolder are:

Mirroring on local hard disk – MirrorFolder is ideal for real-time mirroring on a separate local hard disk. In this mode, files in the mirror folder will remain identical with their source at any point of time. In case the source disk fails, you will have all of your files on the mirror folder/disk for immediate use. You may also use auto-synchronization mode of mirroring on local hard disk and choose to move older versions of files in the mirror folder to recycle bin during synchronization.

Backup on removable disk – MirrorFolder can be used for automatic backup of your working folders on removable drive/disk like CR-RW, ZIP disk, removable hard disk, etc., preferably in auto-synchronization mode as they are normally slower than local hard disk. You may also use real-time mirroring on removable disk in case it is fast and supports unlimited rewriting, e.g., removable hard disk. Removable disks are also ideal for storing zip archive files created by mirror folder.

Mirroring entire system drive – MirrorFolder can be used to mirror entire Windows drive on another local hard disk drive in real-time mode. In case the source drive fails, you can use mirror drive to boot the Windows without any lose of data/files (you need to make the mirror drive as “Active” in the Disk Manager / FDISK program when creating the mirror). Note that at present MirrorFolder does not support mirroring entire system drive on a remote network drive.

Synchronization between laptop and desktop computers – You can use MirrorFolder to synchronize files between a laptop and desktop computers using bi-directional auto-synchronization mode of mirroring.

Workstations to server mirroring – In a networked environment, MirrorFolder can be installed on each workstation computer to mirror important folders on them to one or more servers on the network. Once mirrors are created, MirrorFolder will keep mirrors on the server synchronized with the source folders on each computer on the network without requiring any further effort from individual users. That means, the server(s) will always contain an up-to-date copy of all relevant files of each workstation computer and individual users will no longer have to spend any time backing up his/her computer periodically.

Server to server mirroring – MirrorFolder can be used for mirroring of files/folders from server to server on local network. Since this data mirroring software runs under system account for both real-time and auto-synchronization mode of mirroring, it can mirror any files irrespective of its access right and who is currently interactively logged on the system. However, you must provide a user name and password to access the the remote server and mirror on.

MirrorFolder integrates itself with Windows on installation and you do not need to run a separate EXE file to use it. To create a mirror of a folder/drive, select it in Windows Explorer, then click the right mouse button to open the pop up menu and chose “Mirroring…” option from it. This will open the Mirroring tab on the property page of the selected folder as shown in the next screen shot (taken on Windows XP).

Now select Mirror To radio button on the property page and then Browse for folders to enter the full path name of the mirror folder in the edit box below. You may edit this mirror folder path name, if required, before pressing the Add button to add this path into the mirror list of this selected source folder.

Finally press Ok or Apply button to create the mirror of the selected folder/drive. MirrorFolder will initially copy files into the mirror folder in order to synchronize it with the source folder.

Now select the added mirror folder path name in the list box and then press the Options button to open the mirroring property page of the selected mirror folder. Alternatively, you may select the just created mirror folder in the Explorer on the same computer, click right mouse button, and then chose “Mirroring…” option again from the pop up menu to open the Mirroring tab on the property page of the mirror folder as shown below.

Select the mirroring mode, e.g., Real-time or Auto-synchronization, for this mirror. To chose additional synchronization options, use Sync. Options button. You can also chose to backup the selected mirror folder in a ZIP file periodically under Archive option.

Finally press Ok or Apply button to make the changes effective for the selected mirror folder.

You may change the synchronization options in the following dialog box after completion initial synchronization.

** I like this piece of data mirroring software because it integrates into Windows and it doesn’t takes up a lot of resources. This data mirroring software, however, is a shareware and you are free to use it for 30 days and after that you’d need to purchase it for US 39.00. I’d say it’s a worthily investment.
Note: This data mirroring software is NOT yet supported on coming 64-bit versions of Windows XP/2003.

Automatic Hotmail and MSN Registration

Some russians from ICQ World has came out with a small piece of software called HMReger that is able to register Hotmail and MSN e-mail without going to the website.
All you need to do is to set up your desired Name, Password, secret Questions and Answer, alternate e-mail, gender, date of birth, country, province, timezone, and the username that you want to register together with your password.
All settings can be saved and allows you to register again and again with the same info but different login name.
This is how HMReger looks like.

After you’ve set everything on the Settings button, enter the login name that you want to register and select either hotmail.com or msn.com and finally click Registration button.
After a few seconds, you should see a 8 random generated characters.
