  • Check .NET Compact Framework Version Installed on Windows Mobile

Every Windows Vista and the upcoming Windows 7 comes with .NET Framework preinstalled. I just got to know that even Windows Mobile has its own version of .NET called .NET Compact Framework which is designed to run on Windows CE based mobile such as PDA. It uses some of the same class libraries as the full .NET Framework and also a few libraries designed specifically for mobile devices. However, the libraries are not exact copies of the .NET Framework. The ones in the .NET Compact Framework are scaled down to take up less space.

Whether to have .NET Compact Framework or later versions installed on your Windows Mobile very much depends on whether you have run any third party software that requires it. I have a Garmin Nuvi GPS that can help me to locate places when I will be in Europe next month but one thing I don’t like about Garmin Nuvi is I had to type the exact spelling to search for the place. Unlike Google Maps, there are suggestions if I spelled it wrongly. There is an official Google Maps software for mobile but it requires GPRS to download the maps real time and it cannot work with wi-fi. After searching, I found a software called Google Navigator which can download street data and use it offline.

There are a few packages to download and it says “if your device is Windows Mobile 5.0, you need .NET CF 2.0 installed on your device”. My PDA is running Windows Mobile 6.1 and I had no idea if it had any .NET Compact Framework installed. I didn’t want to simply install anything and do the trial and error method. My PDA is slow enough and installing more junks is probably going to cause it to hang everyday.

Fortunately it’s easy to check what version of .NET Compact Framework on my mobile. I go to Start > Programs > File Explorer. Navigate to the Windows folder and run cgcautil.exe cgacutil.exe. I now see a popup with the .NET CF version info.

    Check .NET Compact Framework version

That’s not the end yet because even though it shows version 2 which is probably .NET Compact Framework version 2, but I don’t know if it is RTM, SP1 or SP2 versions. Below is a list version numbers that correspond with the version name.

  • 1.0 RTM = 1.0.2268.0
  • 1.0 SP1 = 1.0.3111.0
  • 1.0 SP2 = 1.0.3316.0
  • 1.0 SP3 = 1.0.4292.0
  • 2.0 RTM = 2.0.5238.0
  • 2.0 SP1 = 2.0.6129.0
  • 2.0 SP2 = 2.0.7045.0
  • 3.5 Beta 1 = 3.5.7066.0
  • 3.5 Beta 2 = 3.5.7121.0
  • 3.5 RTM = 3.5.7283.0
  • 3.5 = 3.5.7283.0
  • 3.7 = 3.7.8345.0
  • So I have 2.0.7045.0 which is actually the latest version of .NET CF 2. I installed Google Navigator and it runs fine.

  • Pick Up Your Email, from any computer, anywhere in the world

mail2webLike FuseMail, mail2web.com lets you check almost any e-mail account from virtually anywhere. In ad hoc mode, you don’t even need to register: Just enter your e-mail account and password. (This made us uneasy, but according to the privacy policy, passwords are never stored.) The service does its level best to ascertain server settings for Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, and other popular mail services; you can also provide POP or IMAP settings manually.

Intellilogin will automatically figure out your Server name or IP address of your email server. So by entering only your email address and password, you’re able to retrieve your email within seconds.
Advanced Login enables to to specify your own custom Server name or IP address of your email server.
Secure Login brings you to a secured connection (SSL) which you’ll see a https at the hyperlink. Every information you submit will be encrypted with 128 Bit.
There is even Outlook Web Access for emails that is on exchange servers.

By registering and creating a free account with mail2web, you can store your e-mail server names and get a personal home page on the mail2web servers (including a picture, favorite news groups, and favorite links). The contact importer offers a handy ability to parse CSV files to find just the right fields for your address book. There is also a WAP version of the e-mail client for accessing mail on WAP-enabled phones.
For PDA users, you can also find a PDA mail2web version.

Although mail2web.com does not provide all the functions of a premium service (there is no antispam filtering, for example), what it does it does very well. While you’ll see a good many banner ads here, the visual design remains clean and even elegantly laid out.

Basically everyone is able to use this service 🙂
I know I use them on my PDA. For desktop, I still recommend ePrompter.

  • Full Backup and Restore Nokia Contacts, Calendar, Text Messages and Settings

I bought a Nokia N82 mobile phone on December 2007 for my wife as a Christmas present. It was newly released at that time and comes with a 5 megapixel camera. As usual, when we buy something that is so new in the market, it tends to be buggy. Just like when a new version of Windows is newly released, there are lots of problems and the end users will have to wait for hotfixes and service packs to make the system more stable. Many years back when I want to update the firmware of the Nokia phone, I’ll have to bring it to a Nokia service center and get them to do it. Now, Nokia allows us, the end-users to update the device firmware via Software Updater from our computer.

The benefits of updating the Nokia device firmware include getting new features, applications, and performance improvements to your device. Before updating the device’s firmware, it is advisable to make a full backup of the phone first in case something goes wrong with the update and you can still restore back your contact, calendar, text messages and settings.

You can backup Nokia with Nokia PC Suite. Currently the latest version of PC Suite is v7.1

    1. Download the latest Nokia PC Suite, install and follow the instructions on screen on how to connect your Nokia phone to your computer.

    2. Launch Nokia PC Suite and click on the top left icon that looks like a safebox.
    Backup Nokia Phone

    3. Click the icon that says “Back up the desired phone contents to a backup file which is saved on the PC”.
    Nokia Content Copier

    4. Now you can select what you would like to backup from the Nokia phone. There is user files from the phone memory and memory card, contacts, calendar, notes, text messages, bookmarks and settings. You can check all to perform a full backup of your Nokia phone.
    Backup Nokia Phone

    5. You will now get to choose where to save the Nokia backup file. The file name by default will have the current date and phone name with .nbu extension.

    6. Click the next button and the backup will start. When the backup has completed, you will get a window telling you that.

You can now update your device’s firmware or even reset your Nokia back to its default factory settings. The steps to restore back all your contacts, text messages and etc from backup is nearly the same as back up. Launch Nokia PC Suite, click on the backup icon and select “Restore the desired phone contents from a backup file to your phone”. Backing up mobile phone book or contacts is actually very important even if you’re not going to update the firmware. We never know when we will misplace our phone or even get stolen and cause us to loose all our important contacts. Happened to me once on my PDA and I had a tough time getting all my contacts back.

  • Check your Gmail from mobile or PDA

I remembered sometime last year I was on a Europe trip and needed to check my Gmail once in a while using my O2 XDA IIi PDA.
The PDA screen is too small to be using the normal Gmail web interface. So I searched around and found Gmail Lite. It’s open source, and to be honest, it’s quite problematic.
Gmail is still in beta and is always in constant revision. So there will be updates here and there and resulting Gmail Lite unable to use until the author or someone fix it to be compatible.

Now, Gmail has finally came out with their own Gmail mobile which you can use your browser on your PDA or mobile to check your Gmail if you have wireless internet access.
    Gmail Mobile PDA

Gmail Mobile offers a number of cool features:
    • The interface is automatically optimized for the phone you’re using
    • You can access attachments, including photos, Microsoft Word documents, and .pdf files
    • If you enter phone numbers in your Gmail Contacts list, you can reply to messages by call

Google doesn’t charge you to access your Gmail account from a mobile phone, but depending on your service plan, you may be charged by your wireless provider. Check with your provider for more information about fees associated with accessing the Internet from your mobile phone.

Just enter http://m.gmail.com in your phone’s web browser to log in to your Gmail account.

  • MetrO Worldwide Public Transport Systems for PDA or Phone

I will be going for my honeymoon next week and I’ve done a lot of research to prepare myself so that I won’t get really lost or waste a lot precious time when I am traveling in Europe with my wife. I will be bringing my Garmin Nuvi GPS along with me so that I know where is my current location. The Point of Interest feature in my GPS is also very helpful in finding nearby hotels, restaurants and etc. Another important gadget that will guide me along the way is my newly bought HTC Touch 3G PDA. At first I wanted to buy a simple and cheap Nokia phone but it lacks of third party software, so I went for a PDA instead. It’s running on Windows Mobile 6.1 and there are tons of software for it.

I know that most Europeans travel around Europe using trains and subways. I don’t want to go there then only learn about it so I looked for a software that can maybe help me find my way in public transport systems in Europe and I found MetrO.

Métro is your free guide on PDA (Palm, PocketPC, iPhone, BlackBerry, Smartphone, Symbian) to public transport systems worldwide with over 400 cities covered now. Other than that, updating the software and city files is easy when you install another software called MétrUp. It is a tool that connects to the free update service and downloads the latest versions of your Métro program & city files. You select which cities you want to update (select only one if your connection to the internet is slow) and the programs check if a new version is available. When it finds one, it downloads the file to your device and automatically update the city. If you already have the latest release, no transfer occurs.

Installing MetrO on your Windows Mobile PDA is very easy. Just download the correct package and run setup.exe which will bring up ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center to install MetrO. Wait, it’s not finished yet because you have manually copy the cities .PDB file to your mobile. You can either transfer all cities which is located in ALL folder or select a few from the list. As for me, I only select the cities that I’ll be in so that I won’t waste the memory space on my PDA and also it loads faster when searching for cities file.
    install metro cities PDB files

Just put in where you are and where you want to go and the software takes you there. There are a lot of small buttons with no description on it. So make sure you get familiar with the software MetrO before you use it. The best place to learn about how to use MetrO is at the official user guide webpage.
