  • Cheapest Code Signing Certificate and Walkthrough in Getting it

Do you normally take note of the security warning messages when you run a file on your Windows computer or when it prompts you to allow the program to make changes from the User Account Control window? To be honest I have never cared about them because I know that the file will be safe as long as I download it from the official website. For example, I download Firefox web browser from www.mozilla.com and not from some free file hosting websites such as mediafire where the uploader is able to tamper the file with some malicious code.

While I was looking to purchase SSL certificates few weeks ago, I noticed another certificate called code signing. Basically code signing certificate are meant for software to proof that the software comes from the author and not tampered or modified. If you use a hex editor or resource editor to change anything on a signed file, it would instantly lose the digital signature. There are two ways to see if the file is digitally signed or not.

  • Get SMS Notification when Electricity Power Supply is Restored

I received a notification from our Malaysian electricity company that they will temporarily cut the power supply for 9 hours next week on my day off from work. Staying at home without the electricity for 9 hours is nearly impossible for me because I can’t watch TV or use the computer, no ceiling fan or air conditioner when the weather is so terribly hot nowadays. Moreover, even if I can tolerate it, my baby definitely can’t. The only option is to get out of the house and go to my parents house or the shopping mall.

Although they mentioned 9 hours of power shut down, I believe that the stated period is the maximum time and the power could probably be restored much earlier. I wanted to have a way to get notified when the power supply comes back so that I can go back home instead of being outside for the whole 9 hours. I believe there are software that I can use do to this but my UPS battery backup cannot last more than 2 hours. So using the computer to detect when the power is restored and notifying me is definitely out of the question. Fortunately I managed to figure out a solution which I can get a SMS text notification when my home electricity supply is restored.

  • Why Aren’t There Any Articles For Today?

I usually post an article everyday at 3AM central time and you might have noticed why aren’t there any today.

    Here’s why…

    My 26th Birthday
It’s my 26th BIRTHDAY and I would like to take a break from work, have a nice dinner and perhaps go for a drink with a couple of friends later at night.

Do check back tomorrow as I have an interesting tip coming up tomorrow!

  • 24 hours website downtime

GRRRR! My site has been down for nearly 24 hours since yesterday and when I woke up today, thank God it’s working. However, I am still unable to access my domain’s CPanel and also my e-mails.

Reason for downtime from my webhost:

We have received information that the kernel versions installed in the servers are vulnerable (though they are new) , and needs upgrade very shortly.
Inorder to make the system foolproof, we shall be taking down the server for immediate maintanence tomorrow at 3.00 am GMT. The server will be undergoing a re-image, and we would be restoring the accounts from a backup at least “ONE WEEK OLD“.
This is to ensure that we donot have any suspicious contents on the websites. Therefore, we would advise you to make any changes on your domains after the server upgrade only.

The info above is gotten from my webhost site. I think it’s just not fair to bring down out site like that without even notifying us through email. Restoring backup at least one week old is not very acceptable because I post everyday and I will loose 7 posts. Luckily they’ve only reverted back to one day before and I only lost 1 day’s post after I complained to them.
If I am not mistaken, they have like 20 over servers and they are re-imaging all servers. So please bear with us until everything is completed.

  • Stop smoking?

Let’s face it – Smoking isn’t good for you, no matter what the excuse is.
Some might say that it is a bad habit, and thus harder to kick.

Why not try the Cigarette Counter instead?
    The Cigarette Counter
It is a simple device that helps you be aware of your smoking frequency and you can set a personal goal to limit the number of cigarettes that you puff each day.

The Cigarette Counter clips to the top side of the cigarette pack.
    It has four buttons::
    Reset/ Add/ Subtract/ On-Off
and has a display that shows the numbers.

The counter keeps the selected numbers in memory even when off… this allows to turn it off when it’s not being used so that accidental pressure of the buttons doesn’t distort the count.
The purpose of the Cigarette Counter is to give smokers a tangible way to control their habit.
By pushing the button and viewing the number of cigarettes we’ve smoked already, we become more aware of what we’re doing! Most of the times who smokes does so in an automatic, non-conscious way, often without control..

    Weird and unbelievable stuff eh?
