One of my customer wanted me to help him reinstall Windows on his laptop. Reinstalling Windows is easy but the hardest part is to make sure that all his important data has been fully backed up so that he is able to restore it back after installing Windows. Asking him what he wants to backup and he answered everything while his files are everywhere! I can’t afford to spend a lot of time helping him backup so I had to figure out another solution. Seeing that my customer also have a desktop which he claims that he no longer uses it and also a 1 terabyte external USB hard drive, I figured that it would be best to use Acronis True Image Home 2012 with a backup strategy.

My idea is to backup the laptop into an image using Acronis True Image Home 2012 and save the image to the 1TB external USB hard drive. Then I will connect the external hard drive to the desktop and boot up the computer using Acronis Rescue Media to restore the image to the desktop using Acronis Universal Restore technology.

While the restoration process on the desktop is in progress, I will start reinstalling a clean Windows 7 on his laptop. When both the restoration on desktop and installation on laptop has been completed, he can take his time to move whatever files he wants from his desktop to his laptop either through network share or external USB hard drive. If for some reason the restoration doesn’t work, he can always mount the image (Tools and utilities > Image mounting > Mount image) to retrieve his files. Other than that, on worse case scenario he can always restore the image to his laptop since the image is saved to his external hard drive.

Unfortunately Acronis True Image Home 2012 is a shareware that now cost $49.99 for 1PC license. To use the Universal Restore feature, you will have to purchase a separate Plus Pack add-on that cost $29.99. Currently Acronis is having a promo that last until 30th November where by if you purchase a True Image Home 2012 license, they give you the Plus Pack for free. Do note that you will have to access the Acronis’ United States region website in order to get the promo.

The backup strategy suggested above can definitely be done for free using some other third party software but surely involves a more lengthy process. I needed a quick solution so that both me and my customer will not waste too much time on backup and restore process.

You might have noticed that there were a few times the images that I attached to this blog’s article has a watermark. By default the images has no protection at all and anyone can use it and claim that it was taken by them. So a lot of people resort to visible watermarking, a method of embedding information into an image that can clearly shows who is the owner of the image. Depending on the complexity of the image, sometimes it is nearly impossible to remove the watermark from the picture. Where you place the watermark is also important. If you put a small logo watermark at the corner, it can be easily removed by cropping off that part. Best is to put a watermark diagonally across the image BUT professional photographers hated that because it covers up the area which they are trying to focus.

Another method of protecting your image is to use invisible watermarking. It is the same as above by embedding an information to the image except that it cannot be seen. One software that can do this is SignMyImage. SignMyImage allows you to insert your sign to the image and allows you to check if any image is signed or not. The sign can consists of letters, capitals, numbers, dashes and can be up to 10 characters long. Typical sign looks like “Raymond-CC”.


SignMyImage adds your sign directly to the image data. It modifies picture intensity at few places slightly. The modification is so gentle that it is invisible for a human eye. SignMyImage doesn’t use EXIF(or other tags) or stream properties of image files to sign the image. SignMyImage doesn’t allow to sign already signed images and the best part is the signature stays detectable after jpeg compression, scaling and cropping or for example PrintScreen&Paste.

Try comparing the 2 images below and see if you can spot any difference. The left one is original image and the right one is the signed image. I bet you can’t find any difference at all or notice any invisible watermarking.

Embedding an invisible signature using SignMyImage is very easy. All you need to do is load an image to the program, click Sign at the menu bar and select Sign Image. You get to enter your sign which must be less than 10 characters. When the signing has completed, just save the image to a new filename or you can replace the existing one.

The only drawback for SignMyImage is its shareware that cost 14,99 Euros. You can use it for free to watermark images with invisible signature but you cannot use the batch processing feature and every watermarked image will be signed by a visible stamp to right-bottom corner. An idea to overcome the stamp is to maybe add a few pixels of empty space at the bottom so that the program stamps it at an empty area which can be cropped. Paid user also gets to access the Image Spider. Image Spider is a web crawler, that searches through whole internet for signed images. If it finds a signed image, the owner of the image will be noticed.

Multilingual User Interface (MUI) is the name of a Microsoft technology for Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office and other applications that allows for the installation of multiple interface languages on a single system. On a system with MUI, each user would be able to select his or her own preferred display language.

Up to Windows XP, MUI packs for a product are applied on top of an English version to provide a localized user experience. Windows Vista further advances MUI technology with support for single, language-neutral, language-independent binary files supporting multiple language skins, with the language-specific resources contained in separate binaries. The MUI architecture separates the language resources for the user interface from the binary code of the operating system. This separation makes it possible to change languages completely without changing the core binaries of Windows Vista, or to have multiple languages installed on the same computer with the same core binaries being used. Languages are applied as language packs containing the resources required to localize part of, or the entire, user interface in Windows Vista.

If you bought a second hand computer that is in another language, you don’t need to worry about formatting the drive, reinstalling windows vista, looking for the vista installation disc and genuine product key. Just download and install the MUI language packs. However, there’s one small problem which is only Vista Ultimate and Vista Enterprise version can be installed and switched languages… Here is how you can bypass that restriction.


There are a total of 35 languages that Windows Vista can support and they are Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian (latin), Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish and Ukrainian.

There are 2 ways to install languages in Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise. First method is to go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options, Keyboards and Languages tab . The second method is though Windows Update which is sometimes not working.

As for Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Starter and Business version users, even if you managed to download the MUI language pack, you will get an error saying “The total number of languages allowed XX this computer has been reached.” when you try to install. The next button to proceed with installing MUI language pack will be grayed out and preventing you to continue.

I found 2 third party tools that is able to override the limit of one language on non-Ultimate Vista editions. Please use either ONE because if you install the second one, it will result in both programs unusable and you won’t be able to revert back to the original language. You should also turn off UAC User Account Control.

1. Vistalizator

Here is how you can change your Vista language using Vistalizator. First you need to manually download the language pack that you want to install. Currently there are 2 versions of Vista which is RTM and SP1. If you are using Vista SP1, please download the MUI language pack that is meant for SP1.

After finished downloading Vista language pack, you can now download Vistalizator from the link below. Extract and run Vistalizator.exe. Click Add Language button and browse for the language file that you’ve downloaded earlier and it will automatically extract and process the file. Once Vistalizator has finished processing the file, click Install button. Now click the drop down box at Installed Languages and you will see that the language that you want to install is in the list. Select the language, click the Change language button and restart your computer.

2. Windows Vista Multi-language User Interface Hacker v3.0

This tool has 2 methods of installing Vista MUI language packs. The first method is to install the Vista language packs on non genuine Windows Vista and the second method uses the MUI installation program built into Vista by Microsoft. The steps needed to install Vista MUI language packs is the same as Vistalizator. One thing I don’t understand is why the latest Windows Live Messenger has to take up a space in the Windows 7 taskbar area? In Vista and XP, whenever you click the Windows Live Messenger’s X button at the top right, it doesn’t really terminates the program but instead it minimizes to the notification area or some people call it the traybar. But in Windows 7, when you click the X button, the messenger icon is still showing in the notification area and also takes up a space in taskbar which I find it annoying! Other than being annoying, I’m sure some of you wouldn’t want your boss to see that you have Windows Live Messenger running at taskbar.

In Windows 7, they have this new feature where you can pin programs to the taskbar so when you easily launch your most frequently used programs. However this is not the case for Windows Live Messenger in Windows 7. IF Windows Live Messenger is being auto pinned to taskbar, you should see “Unpin this program from taskbar” instead of “Pin this program to taskbar. After doing a little research, I’ve found out how to easily remove Windows Live Messenger from the taskbar and just leave it only in notification tray area.


Just follow the few simple steps below on how to remove Windows Live Messenger from taskbar. Before you start, make sure that Windows Live Messenger is not running. Simply right click on Messenger and select Exit.

1. Click on the Windows 7 Start Menu button

2. Click on All Programs and look for Windows Live Messenger shortcut.

3. Right click on Windows Live Messenger shortcut and select Properties.

4. Go to Compatibility tab.

5. Check “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select Windows Vista (Service Pack 2).

6. Click OK to close the Windows Live Messenger Properties window.

Now when you run Windows Live Messenger, sign in and click the X button, it will only show the messenger icon at notification area but nothing at Taskbar. A good tip to keep your taskbar neat.

This is an interesting technique, where packets are injected to the access point, making it release weak IVs. You’ll think twice about WEP after this! Always use WPA if possible. Stealing your internet bandwidth is already bad and even worse that a person gaining access to your network!

Our Malaysian ISP TM Net has done it again. I believe many Malaysians are experiencing problems in signing in to Windows Live Messenger with almost everything connected with Microsoft, including its main site is either not loading, or taking a very long time to load. In fact there are a lot more international websites that couldn’t load and I had to refresh a few times to get in. Even if you get to log in to MSN and try to send a message, it will tell you that your message cannot be sent to the recipient. Fortunately there are local proxies that we can use which allows us to access most of the sites that Streamyx is having trouble loading.

Since there is nothing much we can do about the hopeless case of TM Net, but we still need the Internet. Recently Duckieman has posted about UltraVPN in forum and saying that it is fast and there is no bandwidth limitation. I noticed that the download speed is capped at around 60KBps per thread but the limitation of the total download speed is 300KBps. Let’s say I download a file from a website and it is going around 60+KBps. But if I use a download manager to download the same file by splitting it into 5 download threads, I can get a maximum download speed of 300KBps.

From what I’ve tested, Alonweb is strictly for browsing purposes only and it has a lot of limitations. Other than that, torrent does not work and you can only download files that is smaller than 5MB. If you try to download any files bigger than 5MB, you will get the error “The request or reply is too large”. The IP address that you’d be getting is from Netherlands.
